Before she died, the 87-year-old British woman recorded answers to about 250 questions in a StoryFile production using 20 cameras. At her funeral, software matched mourners’ questions to those recordings and played the most relevant video response, creating the impression of a live conversation.
How Marina Smith appeared to answer questions at her funeral
Futurism reported on August 19, 2022, that Smith, who had died in June, appeared at her own funeral through StoryFile’s “holographic conversational video experience.” Relatives watched a virtual presentation of Smith responding to questions after her cremation.
The system was prepared while Smith was alive. StoryFile recorded her answering roughly 250 questions with 20 cameras. Its software then indexed those answers into conversational pathways. When a mourner spoke, the system identified the relevant topic and returned a corresponding video clip.
That process explains the unusual realism: mourners were not watching one uninterrupted tribute film. They could ask questions and receive different filmed answers in real time.

Was the AI inventing what she said?
The account of Smith’s funeral describes retrieval and presentation of Smith’s recorded answers, not a generative model inventing new memories, sentences or posthumous opinions. The words, voice, expressions and personal details came from an interview captured before her death.
StoryFile’s current description of its platform follows the same general model: interviews are recorded, AI-indexed and connected to conversational prompts so visitors can receive authentic video responses. A generated system could produce a novel answer in a person’s style; Smith’s funeral installation is described instead as selecting from what she actually said.
Was it really a hologram?
“Hologram” was used in the report as part of the experience’s description, but the available explanation establishes a virtual, life-size conversational video presentation. It does not establish that Smith’s body was reconstructed as a three-dimensional optical hologram.

The important distinction is functional rather than cinematic: the display could respond interactively, while the underlying material remained recorded video.

What made the funeral experience feel live?
Questions rather than a fixed playlist
A conventional memorial video follows a predetermined sequence. StoryFile’s interface allowed mourners to ask their own questions, making the encounter feel directed by the person in front of the screen.
Answers with personal detail
Smith’s son Stephen Smith said the extraordinary part was that she answered questions with “new details and honesty.” He also said people may feel more willing to speak openly while being recorded, potentially producing a freer version of someone’s memories than relatives would otherwise preserve.

A familiar presence in an emotionally intense setting
The setting amplified the effect. Some attendees were reported to be “a little creeped out by it.” In a related example involving Ed Asner, viewers described the experience as “like having him in the room.” Those reactions show why the same feature can comfort one mourner and unsettle another.

Can a family make an AI memorial like this?
StoryFile currently presents a “Legacies” service intended to preserve a loved one’s memories for future questions, alongside institutional and museum solutions. Its site directs prospective customers to book a demonstration. StoryFile’s public information does not state public pricing, a standard do-it-yourself package or geographic availability for every family.

Questions to settle before recording a memorial
Consent and boundaries
The person being recorded should understand that relatives may revisit the material long after the funeral and that conversational access can expose intimate memories. A written plan should identify who may ask questions and who may approve or remove responses.
Expectations about authenticity
Relatives should be told whether every response is an original recording or whether any part of the experience uses generated speech, face animation or synthetic text. The Smith account supports an authentic-recording model; other products may use different methods.
Choosing the right setting
An interactive memorial may work for a private family gathering, museum-style exhibition or anniversary visit. It may be inappropriate for mourners who want a quiet ceremony or who would experience a simulated conversation as a violation of mourning boundaries.
What this funeral demonstration does—and does not—prove
It demonstrates that a carefully recorded interview can be turned into a question-and-answer experience after the interviewee has died. It does not show that an AI has brought Smith back to life, that she was conscious during the funeral, or that software knew facts she never recorded.
The innovation was the conversational interface: software made a finite archive feel responsive. Whether that is more meaningful than a conventional recording depends on the family, the consent arrangements and the emotional needs of the people attending.
