Spotify said Car Thing units would stop operating after December 9, 2024. Contemporary reports said purchasers who could provide proof of purchase, such as a receipt or emailed invoice, could contact Spotify customer service about a refund. As of September 2026, no current official hardware-refund terms confirm that late claims are still accepted.
Why Spotify stopped Car Thing
Spotify discontinued production of Car Thing in July 2022 while saying it would continue supporting units already sold. On May 23, 2024, the company announced that every Car Thing would stop operating after December 9, 2024. Spotify’s announcement, quoted by TechCrunch, said the units “will stop operating” after that date.
Car Thing was a dashboard controller that connected to a smartphone running Spotify and played audio through a vehicle’s sound system. Once Spotify disabled its service, the hardware could no longer perform its intended Spotify function.
Will Spotify refund Car Thing owners?
On May 30, 2024, TechCrunch and other outlets reported that Spotify had created a refund path for owners who could show proof of purchase. A store receipt or emailed invoice was cited as an example. That was a reversal from the initial shutdown announcement, which had prompted owners to ask why a product previously expected to remain supported would become unusable.

The contemporaneous reporting did not settle several important conditions. Spotify declined to confirm whether every owner with proof of purchase would receive a full refund or whether additional eligibility rules, deadlines, regions, or payment requirements applied.
That means the accurate answer today is time-qualified: Spotify was reported to offer a refund process in May 2024, but the available reporting does not prove that Spotify accepts new or late requests in September 2026.

How do I get a refund for Spotify Car Thing?
If you are trying to pursue a claim now, treat it as a customer-service request rather than a guaranteed program. Gather the information Spotify was reported to require and ask the company to confirm whether the request is still eligible.
- Find proof of purchase. Look for the original receipt, emailed invoice, order confirmation, or other document showing where and when the Car Thing was bought.
- Record the device details. Keep the unit’s serial number, account email, purchase location, and any prior Spotify correspondence available.
- Contact Spotify through its official customer-service channel. Explain that the request concerns the discontinued Car Thing hardware and ask whether a refund route remains open in your country.
- Ask for the rules in writing. Confirm the deadline, eligibility requirements, refund amount, return or disposal instructions, and payment method before sending the device or personal information.
- Save the case record. Keep the ticket number, emails, receipts, and any shipping instructions until the matter is resolved.
Do not rely on Spotify’s general Premium, audiobook, or podcast refund guidance as proof of a Car Thing hardware policy. Those pages address digital or subscription payments, not this discontinued device.

What changed on December 9, 2024?
The date marked the end of Car Thing’s operating service, not merely the end of sales. Buying a used unit after that date does not restore its Spotify controller functions. A marketplace listing may describe a device as physically complete, but it should not be presented as a working Spotify product.

For cars with Bluetooth
Pair the phone with the vehicle and select Bluetooth audio as the source. A separate Bluetooth car-audio adapter can help older stereos, but it is suitable only when the adapter matches the stereo’s input and power requirements.
For cars with AUX or USB
Use a compatible cable or adapter and select the corresponding input on the stereo. USB may support charging, digital audio, or both, depending on the vehicle; an AUX connection generally carries audio but not charging or on-screen Spotify controls.

For cars with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay
Connect a compatible phone, complete the vehicle’s setup, and launch Spotify from the car interface. Check the vehicle or stereo manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying or installing equipment.
For older vehicles
An adapter, replacement head unit, or phone mount may be more practical than searching for a discontinued Car Thing. Choose based on the inputs and installation constraints of the specific vehicle, not on the Car Thing’s former feature set.
