Cubase Pro 15 is a full desktop digital audio workstation (DAW) for recording, editing, arranging, mixing, mastering and scoring. Choose AIVA for speed and low-friction ideation, Cubase for production control, or both when a generated sketch needs professional reworking.

AIVA offers browser access plus desktop downloads for macOS, Windows and Linux (AIVA downloads). Cubase Pro 15 is installed locally; Steinberg’s current download listing shows maintenance build 15.0.30, updated June 3, 2026 (Cubase 15 downloads).
What AIVA actually does
AIVA starts with generation. You select a style, provide audio or MIDI influence, audition alternatives and edit the resulting musical material. AIVA advertises more than 250 styles, a vendor claim rather than an independently measured catalog size (AIVA pricing). Downloads can include MIDI and rendered audio, depending on the plan.
This makes AIVA useful for a documentary producer who needs several underscore directions, a YouTuber who needs an instrumental bed, or a non-musician who needs an immediate draft. It is primarily an instrumental composition assistant, not a complete recording, mixing, mastering or live-performance environment.

Generation is not finished authorship
AIVA can reach an auditionable idea faster than a conventional DAW, but the result may still need editing to fit a scene, avoid repetition, create a distinctive identity or meet a client’s exact duration. Neither AIVA nor Cubase guarantees originality, emotional suitability, musical quality or legal safety.
What Cubase Pro 15 actually does
Cubase Pro is a full desktop DAW. It lets you write MIDI, play virtual instruments, record microphones and instruments, comp takes, correct timing and pitch, automate parameters, mix multitrack sessions, master deliverables and prepare notation or video-related projects. Its professional toolset includes AI-powered stem separation, enhanced Expression Maps, advanced modulators, UltraShaper, an updated Score Editor and PitchShifter. Omnivocal is offered in beta as Yamaha vocal synthesis from lyrics and notes entered in the Key Editor; it is not a general-purpose commercial vocal-generation service (Cubase 15 release information).
Cubase begins with user input: a performance, MIDI notes, loops or an existing musical idea. That takes more setup and learning than AIVA, but gives control over voicing, register, dynamics, articulation, sound selection, routing and revisions.

Ideas and arrangement
Use AIVA when the bottleneck is generating possibilities. Use Cubase when the bottleneck is deciding exactly what every musical event should do. AIVA’s in-service edits can reshape generated material, but “editable” does not mean equivalent to Cubase’s piano roll, controller lanes, articulation management, plug-in routing and automation.

Instrumental music versus vocals
AIVA’s published workflow emphasizes compositions, MIDI, MP3 and WAV, and does not establish it as a general text-to-song vocal platform. Cubase can record, tune, arrange and mix a singer. Its Omnivocal beta can synthesize entered lyrics and notes, but should not be treated as a complete commercial vocal generator.
Detailed production
Cubase is the decisive choice for comping multiple takes, timing correction, instrument replacement, third-party VST instruments and effects, surround or complex routing, automation, stem processing, alternate mixes and mastering. AIVA can provide a rendered composition or MIDI, but it is not a replacement for that DAW workflow.
Film, game and documentary scoring
The word “scoring” covers two different jobs. AIVA is useful for mood boards, themes, temporary cues and quick underscore concepts. Cubase is better when music must change precisely with picture edits, hit points and tempo maps, or when a director will request repeated revisions.
- Choose AIVA for: rapid mood exploration, temporary music and short concepts.
- Choose Cubase Pro for: fixed-duration cues, tempo changes, orchestration, articulation, score editing, stems and alternate versions.
- Ask before buying: Does the cue need to follow picture exactly? Must the client receive stems? Will the editor change scene lengths? Is the music temporary or part of the final score?
Cubase 15’s enhanced Expression Maps and updated Score Editor are particularly relevant to detailed orchestral and notation work (Steinberg’s Cubase 15 release material).

The practical AIVA-to-Cubase workflow
A MIDI handoff can save composition time, but it does not transfer the rendered sound or complete project. AIVA lists MIDI downloads on its Free, Standard Annual and Pro Annual plans (AIVA pricing).
- Generate a composition in AIVA and check that the active plan permits your intended use.
- Download the available MIDI and, if useful, an audio render.
- Import the MIDI into Cubase.
- Replace generic parts with your chosen virtual instruments.
- Correct voicings, rhythm, register, dynamics and articulations.
- Add live performances or vocals.
- Rebuild the arrangement around the final picture or brief.
- Mix, master and export the required files.
- Keep the AIVA plan, download date and applicable terms with the Cubase project records.
In Cubase, standard MIDI export is File → Export → MIDI File. The exported file can include tempo and time-signature events. Some Inspector settings must first be converted into real MIDI events; Steinberg documents using Merge MIDI in Loop for that purpose (Cubase MIDI export help).
What the handoff does not preserve
- MIDI does not carry AIVA’s rendered timbre, effects or mix.
- Patch assignments may not map to your libraries.
- Articulations, expression data and controller interpretation may need reconstruction.
- Generic orchestration can sound unnatural through a different instrument library.
- An audio file is immediately usable but much harder to reshape deeply than MIDI.
Pricing, plan limits and commercial rights
AIVA’s pricing page displayed the following figures on August 18, 2026. The annual-plan amounts are monthly equivalents billed annually and add VAT; they are not month-to-month prices.

AIVA’s EULA states that the applicable license depends on the plan active when the composition is downloaded. Its limited commercial license is platform-specific, while the relevant Pro terms assign copyright as described in the agreement. Rights are stated as worldwide and perpetual under those terms, but AIVA also places responsibility on the user to assess infringement risk (AIVA EULA). Upgrading after a lower-tier download is not necessarily equivalent to downloading under Pro.

The EULA also restricts account sharing and certain high-volume, database, training and competing-service uses. Uploaded audio or MIDI influence may be used to train AIVA’s systems under a broad, perpetual license, so do not upload confidential, unreleased, client-owned or third-party material without permission.
Cubase Pro 15 has a listed suggested retail price of €579 or US$579.99, and Steinberg advertises a free 60-day trial. Purchasing Cubase licenses the software; it does not automatically give you rights to third-party loops, samples, virtual instruments, imported AIVA material or copied MIDI. Copyright in a finished work also depends on the material and human authorship involved. Budget separately for plug-ins, sample libraries, an interface, microphones, storage and backups.

Beginner creator or occasional video maker
Start with AIVA if you need occasional instrumental background music and accept its download and licensing limits. Cubase is likely unnecessary unless you intend to learn recording and mixing.
Film, documentary or game composer
Use AIVA to audition themes and underscore directions. Choose Cubase Pro when cues must lock to picture, survive revisions, use detailed orchestration or ship as stems.

Singer-songwriter or recording artist
Choose Cubase Pro. It records vocals and instruments, supports comping and tuning, and lets you build a repeatable mix. AIVA can be an optional source of instrumental ideas, not your recording environment.
Electronic producer or music student
Cubase offers the deeper lesson in MIDI, synthesis, arrangement, routing and mixing. AIVA is useful for quickly testing harmonic or structural starting points.
Client-services studio
Cubase is the production hub for revisions, stems and archives. Add AIVA only when its plan explicitly covers the client’s distribution, and retain the relevant license records.
System and workflow constraints
- AIVA depends on an account, cloud generation, plan status and download availability; keep local backups of every approved render and MIDI file.
- Cubase requires a desktop installation, license activation, storage for content libraries and a compatible operating system. Audio interfaces, plug-ins and sample libraries add their own compatibility requirements.
- Projects can become difficult to reopen when third-party plug-ins or libraries are missing or versions change. Archive audio, MIDI, plug-in lists and the operating-system details used for delivery.
- Check the exact Cubase edition: features in Pro are not automatically included in Artist, Elements, AI or LE.
Final recommendation
Choose AIVA when speed, instrumental ideation and minimal production knowledge matter most. Choose Cubase Pro 15 when you need a complete studio for recording, editing, scoring, mixing and mastering. Choose both when AIVA can solve the blank-page problem and Cubase can supply the human arrangement, sound design, performance and delivery work. The products occupy different stages of the production chain, so buying one does not eliminate the reasons to use the other.
