What “free IPTV” means here
IPTV technically means television delivered over internet protocol. In app stores, the label is also used for player apps that require an M3U playlist or a provider login. A player such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters does not supply channels or establish that a provider has distribution rights.

The 10 best free legal IPTV-style apps
1. Pluto TV — best overall
Pluto TV most closely resembles casual cable surfing: a channel grid, scheduled streams and a broad mix of entertainment, news, comedy, crime, anime and sports-related programming, alongside on-demand titles. Pluto identifies the service as free, legal and ad-supported and distributes it across mobile and connected-TV platforms (official availability; Android listing).
Best for: viewers who want to flip through channels. Limits: advertising, market-dependent lineups and many themed or library channels rather than current-season cable networks. Channel totals change, so treat any count as dated and regional.
2. Tubi — best live-plus-on-demand combination
Tubi offers Android and iOS apps, no subscription fee or credit-card requirement for its core service, live channels and a large on-demand movie and television catalog (Tubi). An account helps synchronize a watchlist and continue watching across devices, but the service remains ad-supported.

3. Plex — best with a personal media library
Plex provides free ad-supported internet channels without requiring a tuner or antenna and lists Android mobile and iOS support (Plex live-TV overview). It also organizes a user’s own legally acquired media, making it a useful single-app hub.
Best for: households combining free streaming with personal media. Limit: Plex’s free internet channels are separate from antenna/tuner DVR features and Plex Pass benefits described at Plex TV.
4. Xumo Play — best straightforward FAST alternative
Xumo Play supplies free live and on-demand programming and is especially convenient on Xumo hardware or services integrated with a television provider. Xumo’s documentation explains its app ecosystem and notes that Xumo devices can also include apps such as Tubi and Pluto TV (Xumo support).

Best for: viewers seeking another channel-grid service. Limit: Xumo Play, Xumo TV and Xumo Stream Box branding and mobile availability can differ; check the current Google Play and App Store entries.
5. Sling Freestream — best free gateway to paid live TV
Sling Freestream combines free live and on-demand programming with the same brand that sells paid channel packages (Sling Freestream). It is a sensible starting point if you may later add a paid Sling plan.
Best for: testing Sling before paying. Limit: Freestream is not Sling Orange, Sling Blue or another paid package; premium sports and expanded cable networks generally require payment.
6. The Roku Channel — best catalog and discovery layer
The Roku Channel offers free live channels and on-demand films and shows. Roku says its mobile app supports iOS and Android and can stream the service (mobile-app details). Current Roku pages advertise different live-channel totals—one page says 350-plus while the main site says 500-plus—so no single count should be treated as permanent (Roku support; Roku).
Best for: broad discovery across free channels and on-demand titles. Limit: some features require a Roku account, and availability is country-specific. The mobile app’s remote-control function is separate from its streaming function.
7. NewsON — best for local news
NewsON focuses on live and on-demand local newscasts rather than general entertainment. Its corporate site says no cable subscription or login is required and describes coverage from participating stations (NewsON; about NewsON).
Best for: breaking news, weather and regional broadcasts. Limit: station participation and market coverage determine what you can watch; it is not a cable replacement.

Google lists Haystack News among providers that can surface no-cost live channels in its U.S. Google TV experience (Google TV provider information). It is suited to local, national, international and business-news discovery rather than movies or scripted entertainment.

Local Now is a specialist candidate for local news, weather and regional information. Its value is greatest when your priority is community information rather than national entertainment.

10. Peacock’s free tier — best conditional NBCUniversal option
Peacock may provide selected NBCUniversal programming, news or live content without payment, but the free offering and mobile experience can change. Confirm exactly what is available in the United States on the day you install it; much of Peacock’s best-known catalog and sports rights may require a paid plan.

Do not assume a FAST app carries your local ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC affiliate. Rights depend on the market, station ownership and whether the app has a live feed or only clips. Free apps can supply sports news, archive programming and occasional live events. Pluto’s official listing mentions NFL- and UFC-related programming, but event availability is time- and territory-sensitive (Pluto Android listing). Serious fans should not expect every game, league package or regional sports network for zero cost.
Ads, accounts and privacy
Advertising is the normal price of free viewing. Linear channels insert commercial breaks; on-demand titles use their own ad schedules. Some services allow immediate playback, while others make accounts useful or necessary for watchlists, synchronization or certain features. NewsON says no login is required, while Tubi promotes registration for cross-device personalization.
Google says advertising on its free live channels may be personalized using a device advertising ID or Google Account information (Google’s Android TV explanation). - Open Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
- Search the exact service name and confirm the publisher or developer matches the official company.
- Install the official app; avoid APK repositories and cloned listings.
- Read the sign-in screen carefully. A free tier and a paid trial may be separate choices.
- Open the current section labelled Live, Channels, Guide or an equivalent label.
- Test playback on Wi-Fi and cellular data if you plan to watch away from home.
- Use AirPlay or casting only when the destination device and app support it.
In the U.S., Google TV can surface free channels from apps including Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV and Tubi, but integration on a television does not guarantee the same availability on every Android phone or Google TV device (Google TV support).
Common problems and safe fixes
The app is unavailable
Licensing is geographic. A legitimate service may be absent, partially available or differently programmed outside the United States. VPN use can violate terms and trigger playback or account checks; it is not a guaranteed solution.
The expected network is missing
Free services generally offer themed channels, news feeds and selected events—not every premium network, local affiliate or league right. Check the service’s current guide and your market.
Playback buffers
- Try another channel to see whether the fault is specific to one feed.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Restart the app, update it and restart the device.
- Restart the router and pause large downloads.

- APK-only distribution or instructions to disable device security.
- Promises of every premium channel for free.

- Requests for cryptocurrency, gift cards or unrelated permissions.
