“Change the language” in Hotstar can mean three different things: switching the spoken audio or dub, changing subtitles or captions, or changing the app’s menus and title information. For audio or subtitles, start the video, open Audio & Subtitles, the gear/settings button, or CC, and choose a track that is available for that title and your region. App-interface language is a separate, edition-dependent setting.
First, identify which language you want to change
| Setting | What it changes | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Audio language | The spoken or dubbed soundtrack | Inside the video player under Audio or Audio & Subtitles |
| Subtitles or captions | Translated dialogue text; captions may also describe sounds or speakers | Inside the player under Subtitles, CC, or Audio & Subtitles |
| App/interface language | Menus, navigation, and possibly title metadata | Profile, settings, preferences, or content-language controls, if offered by that edition |
| Content or discovery language | May influence recommendations or catalogue browsing | Account or profile preferences, where available |
Changing a film’s audio does not automatically change subtitles or the app’s menus. Hotstar branding, catalogues, and controls also differ by country; Indian viewers may see JioHotstar while other markets use Hotstar.
How to change the audio language
- Open Hotstar or JioHotstar and select a movie, episode, live programme, or sports stream.
- Start playback. The language control normally appears only after the video begins.
- Open Audio & Subtitles, Audio, the gear/settings icon, or the player’s multiple-audio icon.
- Choose the desired audio track, then close the menu and listen for the change.
The player exposes only tracks supplied for that specific title, episode, programme, device, and region. JioCinema’s help documentation describes a multiple-audio icon and notes that multiple languages are available only for some movies and shows: JioCinema help.
Android and iPhone/iPad
Play the title, tap the picture to reveal controls, then tap the gear icon in portrait orientation or Audio & Subtitles in landscape orientation. Select Audio and choose a listed language. The control locations are documented in this device guide: Hotstar player instructions.

Start playback on the Hotstar website, click Audio & Subtitles or the settings icon in the player, and select an available audio track. Browser settings cannot add tracks that are not licensed for the video or territory.
Smart TV and streaming devices
Start the programme and press Up, or the equivalent button that reveals the playback controls. Choose Audio & Subtitles, then select an audio track. Samsung, LG, Android TV/Google TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, and set-top-box remotes may expose the menu differently.

Live television and sports
Live channels and sports can offer fewer commentary or audio feeds than on-demand movies. Do not assume that a language available on a film is available on every live programme.
How to change subtitles or captions
- Start the title rather than remaining on its details page.
- Open Audio & Subtitles, Subtitles, or the CC button.
- Select the subtitle or caption language.
- Choose Off if the player provides that option and you do not want subtitles.
JioCinema’s help material confirms that the CC control activates or deactivates subtitles and that support varies by title: JioCinema help.

Subtitles, captions, and permanent text are different
- Subtitles generally translate spoken dialogue.
- Captions or closed captions may include sound effects and speaker identification.
- Forced or embedded subtitles are part of the video image or required for certain scenes; the player may not be able to hide them.
Accessibility settings on a phone or TV can change text size, contrast, or appearance, but they cannot create a translation that the title does not contain.
How to change the Hotstar app or interface language
There is no reliably confirmed, universal menu path for every Hotstar or JioHotstar edition. Look in the app’s profile or settings area for labels such as Language, App Language, Content Language, or Preferences. The available controls can depend on country, app edition, account, and device.

Do not assume that changing the phone, browser, or television’s system language will change Hotstar’s interface. If no language preference appears in the profile or settings screens, that edition may not provide a separate interface-language switch. Official entry points are Hotstar Support, Hotstar Help, and Help and Support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your preferred language is missing
- The movie, episode, or programme was never dubbed or subtitled in that language.
- Rights differ by country or territory, so a track can exist in India but not elsewhere.
- One episode or season may have a track that another does not.
- Live channels and sports may provide fewer language choices.
- The title may be available only in its original language.
- Your account region, travel status, VPN, proxy, or licensing restrictions may limit the catalogue.
- Text may be permanently embedded in the video and therefore not removable.
Jio’s documentation specifically says that audio languages and subtitles are offered only for some titles, so a missing option is not automatically an app fault: JioCinema help.

When the language control is missing or does not work
- Confirm that the video is playing, not paused on the title-information screen.
- Tap or click the picture to reveal hidden controls.
- Rotate a phone to landscape if the gear or Audio & Subtitles button is not visible.
- Check both the gear/settings menu and the separate Audio & Subtitles or CC button.
- Try another episode or title. If the option appears there, the first title is likely the limitation.
- Update Hotstar/JioHotstar, force-close it, and reopen it.
- Sign out and back in. On Android, clear the app cache; avoid clearing app data unless you are prepared to lose downloads and sign in again.
- Test the web player or another supported device.
- Disable VPN or proxy tools while checking regional content or support. Hotstar support pages may challenge connections identified as VPNs, proxies, or unblockers.
- If a language is listed but playback remains in another language, contact official Hotstar support through the links above.
Practical alternatives when a language is unavailable
- Check the title’s audio and subtitle information before starting it.
- Try another episode, season, or version of the same programme.
- Watch the original-language track with available subtitles.
- Use the web player if the mobile or television layout hides the selector.
- Adjust subtitle appearance through device accessibility settings, understanding that this changes presentation, not translation.
- Use official support rather than modified apps or unofficial browser extensions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change audio without changing subtitles?
Yes. Audio and subtitles are separate controls in the player. Select an audio track under Audio and leave subtitles unchanged, or configure subtitles independently.
Can one language choice apply to every show?
Player language choices are generally title-specific. A selected track may not exist for another episode, movie, live channel, or region.
Why does my TV show fewer languages than my phone?
The title, region, device app, and live/on-demand format can expose different tracks. Test another title or the web player before treating it as a fault.
Does changing my phone’s system language change Hotstar?
Not reliably. Hotstar’s interface language, where offered, is controlled by the service’s own profile or settings options.
