Netflix announced a redesigned TV experience on May 7, 2025. On supported Google TV televisions and the Google TV Streamer, the Netflix app moves its main navigation to the top of the screen, adds a My Netflix destination and adjusts recommendations more quickly as you browse and watch.
Netflix’s “responds to your moods” wording does not mean the app can read your emotions. The documented change is context-sensitive personalization based on actions such as watching trailers, rating titles and browsing. The redesign applies to Netflix on many TVs and streaming devices, not exclusively to Google TV.
What Netflix changed in the TV app
Netflix describes the redesign as a simpler homepage that helps members decide what to watch with less searching. The visible changes include:
- The main shortcuts move from a vertical menu on the left to a menu across the top.
- The top menu includes TV shows, Movies, Games, My Netflix and Profiles.
- Search and saved content are intended to be easier to reach.
- More title information appears while you browse, including contextual callouts such as popularity or awards when Netflix supplies them.
- The layout uses more open spacing and fewer competing elements.
Netflix’s announcement is available at Netflix’s official announcement. The redesign is an app-level change: it should not be confused with a redesign of the Google TV operating system’s own home screen.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
What “responds to your moods” means
Netflix has not documented a camera, microphone, biometric signal or psychological test that identifies how you feel. It is using “moods and interests in the moment” as a friendly description of faster personalization.
According to Netflix’s support documentation, recommendations can react to actions taken inside the service, including:
- Titles you watch
- Trailers you play
- Titles you rate with a thumbs-up
- Your browsing activity
- Your existing profile and viewing history
In practice, a few recent interactions can influence which rows appear or how titles are ordered. That may make the homepage feel more relevant to what you want tonight, but it is not proof that Netflix knows your emotional state. A recommendation can also be wrong, and a brief viewing session or rating may steer later suggestions in an unintended direction.

Is the redesign powered by generative AI?
Netflix’s announcement mentions several separate experiments and features. They should not be merged into one “AI mood detector.”

| TV recommendation redesign | Recommendations can respond more quickly to browsing and viewing actions. Netflix does not say in the TV announcement that the homepage is generative-AI powered. | Netflix on supported TVs and streaming devices |
| Conversational search | An experimental search experience accepts natural-language requests such as wanting something funny and upbeat. | A small, opt-in beta announced for iOS |

The conversational search and mobile Clips announcements are covered in Netflix’s announcement. Neither establishes that Google TV users can type a mood request into the redesigned television app.
Where Categories and New & Popular went

How to tell whether your TV has the new interface
- Open the Netflix app on your television or streaming device.
- Look at the homepage navigation.
- If shortcuts run across the top of the screen, the new TV experience is active.
- If the menu is still on the left, the device may still be using the older interface.
Netflix says the redesign is available on most TVs and TV streaming devices, with additional devices receiving it over time. Some hardware may not meet the technical requirements and can retain the previous experience. Availability can therefore differ by device, region, app version and rollout stage; Netflix has not published a universal Google TV model-by-model list.
If an eligible device still shows the old layout
First confirm that the Netflix app and the device software are up to date. You can then restart the television or streamer and, if needed, sign out and back in. These are general troubleshooting steps rather than a Netflix-documented command that forces the redesign. If another supported device has the top menu but yours does not, the difference may reflect hardware eligibility or staged rollout. Netflix support can investigate a persistent discrepancy.

On Google TV, Netflix remains a standalone app. You can open it from the app list and, on supported hardware, use a dedicated Netflix button or Google Assistant voice control. Netflix provides separate guidance for Google TV televisions at its Google TV support page and for the Google TV Streamer at its Google TV Streamer support page.

The Google TV home screen and the Netflix homepage are separate layers:
- A change inside Netflix does not mean Google TV’s system-wide recommendations or menus have changed.
- Two Google TV televisions from different manufacturers can receive the Netflix redesign at different times.
- Netflix specifically documents support for Google TV televisions and the Google TV Streamer, but support still depends on the model, region and software state.
- Games shown in the Netflix TV menu are described as a beta experience and may depend on country and hardware.
What improves—and what may frustrate you
Potential benefits
- Major content areas are visible without opening a side panel.
- Title details are easier to inspect while browsing.
- My List and partially watched titles have a central home.
- Recent viewing and feedback can influence recommendations sooner.
Trade-offs
- People accustomed to the left-side menu must learn a new layout.
- Genre browsing is less obvious once Categories disappears from the main menu.
- Removing New & Popular means learning to use New on Netflix and Top 10 rows instead.
- More reactive recommendations can create a feedback loop: a short trial or an accidental rating may affect later rows.
- A cleaner interface does not guarantee a larger catalog or better recommendations for every profile.
Do you need new hardware?
Usually not. Check the Netflix app on your existing TV or streamer first; the top-menu test tells you whether the redesign is already active. A new device is relevant only if your current hardware is slow, unsupported or remains on the old interface after Netflix’s rollout reaches comparable devices.
The Google TV Streamer is one compatible option, while Google TV televisions from manufacturers such as Sony and Hisense are other possibilities. Check the exact model and region before buying. A Netflix subscription is required to use the app; official signup and plan information are at Netflix signup and Netflix’s plans page. The redesign itself is not described as requiring a higher-priced plan.
Bottom line
Netflix changed its TV interface on May 7, 2025, moving navigation to the top, introducing My Netflix and making recommendations more responsive to recent in-app behavior. Google TV is one place you may see the change, not its exclusive target. “Mood” means Netflix is trying to respond to current interests—not that the app is detecting your emotions.
