How to Fix Spotify Randomly Lowering the Sound on Windows 10

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Spotify becomes quieter when a call, microphone, notification, or voice chat starts, first disable Windows communications ducking: right-click the taskbar speaker icon, choose Sounds, open Communications, select Do nothing, then choose Apply and OK. Reopen Spotify and test it. If the change is unrelated to communications, check Spotify’s per-app mixer volume, output device, audio enhancements, Bluetooth mode, and playback processing before reinstalling anything.

Identify what is actually changing

The same symptom can have different causes. Note whether the Spotify slider moves, whether the drop coincides with another event, and whether other applications are affected.

What you observe More likely explanation
Volume drops when a call, microphone, or voice activity begins Windows communications ducking or an attenuation setting in the calling application
Spotify’s visible slider moves Spotify, the Windows mixer, a media-key utility, or another application is changing volume
The slider stays put but playback gets quieter Communications processing, enhancements, Bluetooth profile switching, a driver, or third-party audio software
Only particular songs sound quieter Track mastering, Normalize volume, equalizer settings, or transitions rather than a random system change
Every application becomes quiet Master volume, hardware controls, the output device, driver, or amplifier
Only the desktop app is affected Spotify’s desktop client, cache, or its output routing
Spotify and the web player are both affected Windows, the output device, driver, Bluetooth, or communications software

1. Disable Windows communications volume reduction

Windows 10 can reduce other sounds when it detects communications activity. A Spotify moderator recommends changing this setting for fading or suddenly quiet playback.

  1. Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and select Sounds.
  2. Open the Communications tab.
  3. Under When Windows detects communications activity, select Do nothing.
  4. Choose Apply, then OK.
  5. Close and reopen Spotify, then test playback while opening the application that normally triggers the drop.

On some builds, reach the same classic panel through Settings → System → Sound → Sound Control Panel → Communications. Labels vary with the Windows build and audio driver. Calls and notifications will no longer automatically lower other audio.

2. Check Spotify’s per-app volume and routing

Windows can store a separate volume and output device for each application. Spotify may therefore be quieter than the master volume or routed to an unexpected device.

  1. Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and choose Open Volume mixer.
  2. Play audio so Spotify appears under the application controls.
  3. Make sure Spotify is not muted and its slider is not substantially below the master slider.
  4. Confirm its selected output is the device you intend to use.

The mixer may not list Spotify until it is actively playing. Microsoft documents per-app volume and output routing as common causes of app-specific audio problems.

Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting steps

3. Confirm the intended playback device

  1. Right-click the speaker icon and select Sounds.
  2. Open Playback and select your speakers, headphones, USB DAC, HDMI display, or other intended device.
  3. Choose Set as Default, then open Properties to inspect the device.

USB, HDMI, Bluetooth, and monitor-connected audio can leave Windows using a different output from the one you expect. In Spotify, open the current output menu if it is available and select System Default to return Spotify to Windows’ normal routing. Spotify’s newer Windows output controls require desktop app version 1.2.84 or higher according to its March 17, 2026 announcement.

4. Disable audio enhancements temporarily

Enhancements can create fading, pumping, muffled sound, or inconsistent loudness. Use this as a diagnostic; it may remove loudness equalization, virtual surround, bass boost, noise filtering, or manufacturer effects.

  1. Open Sounds → Playback.
  2. Right-click the active output device and choose Properties.
  3. Open Enhancements and select Disable all enhancements. Some drivers call this Disable all sound effects, or place the controls in another tab or a manufacturer panel.
  4. Choose Apply and test Spotify.

If the problem stops, re-enable effects one at a time to identify the offending feature. Microsoft and Spotify’s moderator both recommend disabling enhancements when app audio behaves unexpectedly.

Spotify’s newer Exclusive Mode

Spotify’s feature is for Premium users on the Windows desktop app with compatible external devices such as DACs or audio interfaces. It gives Spotify control of the selected device, so other applications may not be able to use it; volume may then be controlled in Spotify or on the DAC/amplifier. Spotify says the control does not appear for Bluetooth headphones or speakers, built-in speakers, or virtual audio devices.

To turn it off, use Spotify → Settings → Playback → Output → turn off Exclusive Mode, then choose System Default. Spotify says the setting is saved between sessions while the device remains connected. Do not enable it as a generic cure if you need Spotify to share audio with Discord, Teams, Zoom, games, browser calls, or notifications.

7. Check communication and audio utilities

Close—not merely minimize—Discord, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Skype, browser calls, game chat or capture tools, voice assistants, headset utilities, Voicemeeter, Nahimic, Sonic Studio, Dolby, DTS, Realtek, Sound Blaster, SteelSeries Sonar, Logitech, Razer, and similar suites. Test Spotify, then reopen them one at a time.

Look for controls named Attenuation, Reduce volume of other applications, Lower other sounds, Automatically adjust volume, Automatic gain control, Noise suppression, Voice activity ducking, or Priority speaker. Names and availability differ by application; the test identifies whether another program is involved.

8. Isolate Bluetooth and physical connections

Bluetooth headsets can switch between a high-quality stereo profile and a hands-free communications profile when their microphone is used. Compare Bluetooth with wired headphones, and test with the headset microphone unused. Also try another USB port, a different headphone jack, the computer’s built-in output, another headset, or the same headset on another device.

If the problem follows one headset or connection, investigate its firmware, profile, cable, or hardware. If it follows every output, continue with Windows and driver checks.

9. Restart Windows audio services

For a temporary Windows audio-state failure, press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test Spotify again.

Microsoft app-audio troubleshooting

10. Update or roll back the audio driver

  1. Open Start → Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the relevant audio device and choose Update driver.
  4. Restart Windows and test.

If the problem began immediately after a driver change, open Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when that option is available. A rollback is conditional; not every device retains an older driver.

Microsoft driver guidance

11. Compare the web player before reinstalling

  1. Play the same or similar content in Spotify’s web player.
  2. Play audio from a browser video or local media player.
  3. Use the same output device and repeat the test with communication apps closed.
  4. Record whether only the desktop app changes, whether the Spotify slider moves, and whether the drop follows Bluetooth or a call.

If only the desktop app fails, sign out, close Spotify from the system tray and Task Manager, install the latest available desktop version from Spotify’s official channel, and test before restoring audio add-ons. A web-player difference narrows the cause to the desktop client or its routing; it does not by itself prove a Spotify defect.

Diagnostic checklist

  • Drop during calls or microphone use: set Communications → Do nothing, then inspect the calling app’s attenuation controls.
  • Only Spotify is quiet: check the Volume mixer and Spotify output selection.
  • Fading or muffling: disable Windows and vendor enhancements.
  • Only transitions or certain tracks differ: test Normalize volume, Equalizer, Crossfade, and Automix.
  • Only Bluetooth is affected: compare wired playback and microphone-free use.
  • All applications are affected: inspect the default device, hardware controls, services, and driver.
  • Desktop app only: compare the web player, then repair or reinstall Spotify.

Windows 10 support note

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The system can continue to run, but it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Moving to a supported Windows release may improve long-term driver and application compatibility, but it is disproportionate as the first response to a volume-ducking problem that is usually addressed by the settings above.
