Hulu Picture-in-Picture (PiP) availability depends on your country, device, app version, browser, and the type of video you are watching. On a supported phone or tablet, enable the operating system’s PiP permission, start Hulu playback, enter full screen, and use the Home gesture or PiP control. On a Mac, Safari may provide its own web-video PiP command. Windows and other browsers are less consistent, and Hulu does not publish a universal U.S. PiP compatibility matrix.
What Hulu Picture-in-Picture does
PiP keeps a playing Hulu video in a small floating window while you use another app or browser window. You can move, resize, restore, or close that window without ending playback.
System-level PiP is different from Hulu’s in-app mini-player. A mini-player stays inside Hulu; PiP is managed by iOS, Android, Fire OS, or a browser. Hulu Japan said its mobile mini-player was discontinued when app-based PiP became available in its Android release dated November 20, 2024. That Hulu Japan documentation demonstrates the feature mechanics but does not prove identical availability for U.S. Hulu.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting
- Hulu playback works normally on the device.
- The Hulu app, browser, and operating system are up to date.
- PiP is enabled in the device settings.
- You know that U.S. Hulu and Hulu services in other countries can expose different features.
- You are testing on-demand playback separately from live television.
Hulu’s public U.S. Help Center does not provide a single PiP matrix covering every device, title, plan, and browser. Its supported-device information and Hulu Japan’s instructions therefore need to be read as platform-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every Hulu session supports PiP. Turn on PiP on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Picture in Picture.
- Turn on Start PiP Automatically.
- Open Hulu and start the program.
- If the PiP control is not visible, switch the player to full screen.
- Tap Hulu’s Minimize Video or PiP control, or swipe up to the Home screen while playback is active.
Apple documents the resulting floating-player controls in its iPhone PiP guide. Tap the window to reveal controls, pinch open or closed to resize it, and drag it to another corner. Dragging it off the left or right edge hides it; pull it back from the edge to show it again. Use the close button to end PiP or the restore-full-screen button to return to Hulu.
Turn on PiP on Android phones and tablets
Android menu names differ among Google Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and other devices. Hulu Japan’s instructions list this route:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Open Special app access (sometimes called Special access).
- Choose Picture-in-picture.
- Select Hulu.
- Enable Allow picture-in-picture.
- Open Hulu, start playback, enter full screen if necessary, and use the Home button or Home gesture.
Use Home rather than Back. Back often navigates within Hulu or leaves the player without invoking PiP. Hulu Japan’s mobile PiP instructions list this permission sequence for Android and Fire OS. Its Android announcement dates the rollout to the app released November 20, 2024. Availability in the U.S. depends on the relevant Hulu app and market.
Android PiP controls are manufacturer-dependent, but usually let you tap for controls, move the window, resize it, restore full screen, or close it.

Use Hulu PiP on a Mac
Safari
- Open Hulu in Safari and start playback.
- Open the video controls or Safari’s video-control menu.
- Choose Enter Picture in Picture when that command is offered.
- Use the floating window’s restore or close control when finished.
Apple documents this web-video function in its Safari for Mac guide. The command is not guaranteed for every Hulu player, title, or playback session; DRM and player changes can affect whether it appears.
Chrome, Edge, and Firefox
Hulu’s device information lists current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari for web playback, along with Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.10 or later. That listing does not establish identical PiP controls in every browser. Look first for a player PiP button or a browser video menu. If none appears, update the browser and test another Hulu-supported browser rather than assuming your account is at fault.

What Windows users should expect
No current official Hulu guidance publishes a Windows-specific PiP workflow. Browser-level PiP may work when Hulu’s player exposes the required control, but full-screen mode, Windows Snap layouts, and a browser pop-out are not automatically Hulu-native PiP. If no PiP command appears, the feature may not be exposed for that title or session.

Do not assume that live channels behave like on-demand episodes. Hulu lists Hulu + Live TV support for iPhone and iPad, Android devices, Mac and PC browsers, and other platforms, while warning that content, location, blackout, and device restrictions apply on its Live TV page.

Test in this order:
- Play an on-demand episode.
- Play a live channel.
- Try a recorded DVR program, if your service includes one.
If on-demand works but live playback does not, the difference may come from the live player, rights, blackout rules, location verification, or a temporary service limitation—not from the device permission.
Diagnose a Hulu PiP failure

| The floating window vanished | On iPhone or iPad, check the screen edges; it may have been dragged off-screen and hidden. |
| Playback fails with an external monitor | Check HDMI, HDCP, casting, and display configuration separately from mobile PiP. |
Apply the fixes in a sensible order
- Confirm ordinary Hulu playback.
- Verify the operating-system PiP permission.
- Update the Hulu app, browser, and operating system.
- Use full-screen playback and the Home gesture or button.
- Try a second on-demand title.
- On desktop, try another supported browser; on Mac, try Safari’s documented control.
- Temporarily disable extensions that modify video pages, then restart the browser and sign in again.
- If PiP previously worked and now fails across titles and devices, contact Hulu through the official Help Center.
Avoid bookmarklets or scripts that bypass Hulu’s player restrictions. They can violate site controls, introduce privacy or security risks, and stop working after updates.
Is a special Hulu plan required?
Hulu does not publish a universal PiP requirement for Hulu, Hulu No Ads, Hulu + Live TV, or another particular plan. You need an active subscription with access to the playback you are trying to watch. Plans can change advertising, catalog, downloads, or live-channel access, but an upgrade should not be presented as a PiP fix. Ads can interrupt playback without proving that PiP is unsupported.
When regional or app differences matter
Hulu Japan has explicit mobile PiP documentation, while the U.S. support pages do not publish an equivalent universal compatibility chart. A feature documented in Japan may differ in the United States because of app build, catalog, licensing, device manufacturer, or rollout timing. Treat the permission paths above as practical operating-system guidance and verify the result on your own Hulu account and device.
You do not need a PiP utility, accessory, or separate paid service. Try the native iOS, Android, Fire OS, or Safari controls first; the decisive factors are supported playback, permissions, software versions, and regional availability.
