In Canada, James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) is currently included with Disney+. If you only want one viewing, you can also rent or buy it through the Apple TV Store, Amazon Video, or CosmoGo. Availability was checked on August 16, 2026; storefront prices and catalogues can change.
Avatar: The Way of Water was released in 2022, so “before The Way of Water” is now a viewing-order question rather than a pre-release guide. This page covers the original film.

The simplest choice: Disney+
Disney’s Canadian title page lists Avatar as part of the Disney+ catalogue, so subscribers can press play without paying a separate rental fee. Open the official Disney+ listing and confirm the result is the 2009 James Cameron film.
#1 Best Overall
- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
Disney+ makes the most sense if you already subscribe or intend to watch several related films. Starting a new subscription solely for a single movie may cost more than a one-time rental, depending on the plan and how long you keep it.
Watch it on Disney+
- Open Disney+ Canada in a browser or app.
- Search for Avatar.
- Choose the listing identifying the 2009 film directed by James Cameron, with Sam Worthington and Zoë Saldaña.
- Select Play or Watch.
- Open the audio and subtitle menu to see the tracks available on your device, including any closed-caption or audio-description options.
Best one-time alternatives: rent or buy
Apple TV Store
Apple’s Canadian movie page lists the film for a rental or digital purchase. The Canadian JustWatch snapshot showed a CA$4.99 rental on July 30, 2026, but the amount can change by date, account, promotion, or device. An Apple TV+ subscription does not automatically include every title sold or rented in the Apple TV Store.

- Experience the breathtaking world of Pandora with this incredible Avatar 3-Movie Collection. Follow Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family as they live, love and fight to protect each other and their world. Stunning visuals, wondrous creatures and emotionally gripping stories transport you on an immersive, unforgettable journey
- Open the Apple TV app or the Canadian Apple TV listing.
- Search for Avatar and select the entry marked 2009 and directed by James Cameron.
- Choose Rent or Buy, if those options appear for your account and device.
- Check the Canadian-dollar price, quality, and language information before confirming payment.
Apple’s listing identifies English and French audio, Canadian French subtitles, English closed captions, additional subtitle languages, and Dolby Atmos or Dolby 5.1 on compatible equipment. Track availability can differ by device.
Amazon Video and Prime Video
Amazon’s title page presents the movie as a rental or purchase and may show a three-film collection. Prime membership alone does not guarantee that this movie is included. JustWatch reported a CA$5.99 Amazon Video rental in its July 30, 2026 Canadian snapshot; confirm the currency and final amount in your own Canadian storefront.

- Bluetooth Headphones for Kids: Connect any device including smartphones, tablets, and computers to wirelessly stream high quality, kid-friendly stereo sound for entertainment and/or education. Listen to music, watch movies, TV, and YouTube, or use for homework, audiobooks, and more
- Open Prime Video in Canada and search for Avatar.
- Select James Cameron’s 2009 film, not an unrelated title.
- Review whether the page offers a rental, purchase, or collection.
- Confirm the final price and transaction type before paying.
Which Avatar is the original?
The film to watch first is Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron. It stars Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodríguez, and Giovanni Ribisi. Do not confuse it with Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), the later Avatar: Fire and Ash, or the unrelated Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Use the year, Cameron’s name, and the cast listing to verify the result when a service returns several similarly named titles.
Rank #4
- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
Runtime, languages, and version notes
Platform metadata places the film at roughly 162–163 minutes: Disney+ lists 2 hours 43 minutes, Apple lists 2 hours 42 minutes, and JustWatch lists approximately 162 minutes. That difference is consistent with rounding or metadata variation; it does not establish that the services are offering different cuts.
The listings identify the 2009 film, but they do not reliably establish identical remastering, HDR, bitrate, 3D presentation, bonus material, or an extended-versus-theatrical edition across every service. Check the individual title page for the format and features available to your device.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- Choose Disney+ if you already have it or plan to watch multiple franchise titles.
- Choose Apple TV Store for a standalone transaction, especially if its Canadian language and accessibility information matches your needs.
- Choose Amazon Video if you already use Amazon or want to compare a single rental with a possible collection.
- Choose a digital purchase if you expect repeated viewings and want the title tied to a retailer account rather than a subscription catalogue. This is a retailer-controlled digital licence, not the same as owning a physical disc.
Common problems to avoid
- Wrong title: Confirm “2009” and James Cameron before pressing play.
- Apple TV confusion: “Apple TV Store” rental or purchase is different from inclusion in Apple TV+.
- Prime confusion: A Prime Video page can require a separate rental or purchase even for Prime members.
- Changing prices: The JustWatch amounts are dated snapshots, not guaranteed checkout prices.
- Regional differences: Canadian catalogue access can depend on your account region, billing profile, device, and current licensing. A VPN is not a normal substitute for a Canadian storefront and may conflict with service terms.
- Language differences: Audio, subtitles, captions, and audio description can vary between services and devices.
