First try another title, then try the same title on another supported device or browser. Those two tests show whether the problem is specific to the title, device, app, browser, network, or account.
For most device-wide failures, follow this order: update HBO Max and the device, check the connection, sign out and fully restart, clear app or browser data, then reinstall HBO Max if necessary.
First identify what is failing
Run these tests before deleting the app or changing advanced settings:

If the screen also shows a numerical code, include that code when contacting support. The phrase alone does not identify a precise cause.

Check support and software updates
Before deeper troubleshooting, confirm that the device and operating system are supported in your country. HBO Max’s supported-device list varies by country, model, operating-system version, and service edition: official supported devices and system requirements. The list shown by HBO Max includes Android 7.1 or later and iOS 16.4 or later as examples, but those requirements can change. Android mobile apps are not compatible with Google Chromebooks; use HBOMax.com in Chrome on a Chromebook.
Use the latest supported browser—Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows, or Safari—and update both HBO Max and the device software. HBO Max’s current update and device instructions are at Troubleshoot the HBO Max app or HBOMax.com.
- Android app: Play Store → search for HBO Max → Update.
- iPhone or iPad: App Store → search for HBO Max → Update; then Settings → General → Software Update.
- Android system: Settings → System → Software Update.
- Amazon Fire tablet: Settings → Device Options → System Updates.
Televisions, streaming players, and consoles have different update menus. Use the device instructions on HBO Max’s troubleshooting page rather than assuming every platform exposes the same controls.
Check the internet connection
HBO Max states that HD streaming requires at least 5 Mbps download speed and cites 50+ Mbps for 4K. These are guidance figures, not guarantees: Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, congestion, router problems, and other household activity can still stop playback. - Run a speed test on the same network as the affected device.
- If you are using cellular data, switch to Wi-Fi.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Restart the router if other streaming services are also failing.
- Test near the router or use wired Ethernet when available.
- Try a normal home connection instead of a hotel, school, corporate, or public network.
A single fast speed-test result does not prove that the connection is stable throughout playback.
Sign out and completely restart
This low-risk reset should come before clearing storage or reinstalling:
- Open HBO Max and sign out from the profile or settings menu.
- Power the device fully off; do not merely put it to sleep.
- Wait at least 10 seconds.
- Turn the device on, reopen HBO Max, and sign in again.
HBO Max documents this sequence, with platform-specific restart instructions, at its troubleshooting guide.
Clear app cache or data
Cache clearing removes temporary files. Clearing storage or data resets local app information and normally signs you out. Menu labels differ by manufacturer.

Android phone or tablet
- Open Settings and search for HBO Max.
- Select HBO Max, then choose Storage & cache or Storage.
- Select Clear cache.
- If playback still fails, choose Clear storage or Clear data, if available.
- Reopen HBO Max and sign in.
Amazon Fire TV
- Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications.
- Select HBO Max.
- Choose Force Stop, then Clear Cache.
- If necessary, choose Clear Data.
- Reopen HBO Max and sign in.
iOS, Roku, Apple TV, consoles, and many smart TVs do not provide the same cache controls. Use their restart or reinstall procedure instead of forcing an Android-style cache step.
Fix playback in a computer browser
- Update the browser and relaunch it.
- Open an Incognito, InPrivate, or Private window.
- Sign in at HBOMax.com and test the title.
- If it works privately, disable extensions and ad-blocking software temporarily, allow third-party cookies, and clear HBO Max site data.
- Sign out, restart the computer, and test another supported browser.
Private browsing is not automatically the cause of the error. HBO Max recommends the private-window test because a successful result points toward extensions, cookies, cached data, ad blockers, or browser settings. Re-enable security and privacy protections after identifying the conflicting setting.
TV, streaming-stick, and console steps
For any connected device, use this sequence: update HBO Max; update the device software; check its network connection; sign out; restart or power-cycle; clear app data if the platform offers it; reinstall HBO Max; then test another device. HBO Max’s full device procedures are listed at the official troubleshooting page.
- Fire TV: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for System Update. App cache and data are under Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications.
- Apple TV: Update HBO Max and tvOS, sign out, then Settings → System → Restart. Reinstall if necessary.
- PlayStation: Highlight HBO Max → Options → Check for Update. Update system software and reinstall if needed.
- LG TV: Update through LG Content Store → Apps → My Apps; update the television through Settings → All Settings → General → About this TV.
- Xbox: Check HBO Max and Xbox service status, then update or reinstall as required.
Samsung TV, Roku, Android TV/Google TV, Chromecast, and provider-supplied devices use their own menus. An unsupported device cannot be made officially compatible by clearing its cache.

Check subscription and provider authorization
A playback failure is not automatically a billing problem. Check the account when you also see “Can’t verify your subscription,” “Welcome back,” a provider sign-in prompt, a renewal request, or a provider connection error.
Direct HBO Max and app-store subscribers should verify their subscription status. Subscribers billed through an internet, mobile, or television provider should confirm that HBO Max remains included and that the provider account is still linked. HBO Max’s account guidance is available at subscription and sign-in troubleshooting. Reinstalling the app does not repair an expired or incorrectly linked subscription.
When the title itself may be the problem
If one episode or movie fails on two supported devices while other titles play, stop repeating local resets. Catalog availability can vary by country and change over time, and a title-specific platform problem is possible. Note the exact title, season and episode, your country, the time of the failure, and whether it fails on every device. Then report it to HBO Max support.
Do not assume that a title has been removed or that HBO Max is experiencing a service-wide outage without current confirmation. The tests above establish the scope of your own failure; support can investigate title and account records.

VPN, proxy, antivirus, and custom DNS checks
These are conditional diagnostics, not universal explanations for “Cannot Play Title.” Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy, test on a normal home connection, or pause an antivirus web-shield/HTTPS-scanning feature if it may be intercepting playback. Restore the protection after testing. Do not use modified apps, unofficial APKs, unknown browser extensions, or tools intended to bypass geographic restrictions or account-sharing rules.
What to send HBO Max support
Have the following information ready so support can skip generic repetition:
- Exact on-screen message and any numerical error code
- Movie name or series, season, and episode
- Whether other titles play
- Device make, model, and operating-system version
- HBO Max app version or browser name and version
- Country and, when relevant, billing provider
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular, hotel, public, school, or corporate connection
- Whether the title works on another device
- Every step already attempted
HBO Max specifically asks users to provide the on-screen error message or code when contacting support. Start from the HBO Max Help Center to reach current support options.
