Apple Music now offers two related tools for selected foreign-language songs: Lyrics Translation, which explains a song’s meaning in another language, and Lyrics Pronunciation, which displays a phonetic or transliterated version for singing along. They arrived with Apple’s iOS 26-era updates and remain selective rather than universal.
The controls appear inside Apple Music’s existing lyrics view, so there is no separate app or language pack to install. Apple says machine learning, fine-tuned with language experts, powers the experience; that makes it convenient, but not a guarantee of literary translation or perfect pronunciation.

Translation and pronunciation solve different problems
| Feature | What it shows | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Lyrics Translation | The song’s meaning in another language | Understanding the lyrics |
| Lyrics Pronunciation | A phonetic, romanized or script-based rendering of the original words | Singing along with unfamiliar writing systems |
A Korean lyric rendered in Romanized Korean helps a listener approximate the sounds; it does not translate the lyric. Conversely, an English translation can explain the meaning without showing how to sing the original Korean words. The original lyrics remain available for comparison.
Apple describes the system as machine learning refined with language experts, not as a certified translation or pronunciation service. Lyrics can contain slang, dialect, names, wordplay, cultural references and deliberately altered grammar, all of which complicate both translation and transliteration. Apple’s services announcement explains the technology and its purpose.

How to turn it on
On a compatible iPhone or iPad, use this path:
- Open the Apple Music app and play a song from the Apple Music catalog.
- Tap the currently playing song or the MiniPlayer.
- Tap the Lyrics button.
- Tap the Translation and Pronunciation button.
- Choose Show Translation or Show Pronunciation. Where offered, Hide Original removes the original lyric from the display.
Apple’s labels and layout can vary with the operating-system version, device, region and app release. For larger text or a different emphasis between original lyrics and pronunciation, open Settings → Apps → Music → Larger Text. The steps and display options are documented by Apple Support.
Which languages and scripts are supported?
Apple has described availability as limited to select songs, languages, scripts and regions. Its launch examples included these pronunciation renderings:
- Cantonese → Jyutping
- Simplified Chinese → Pinyin
- Traditional Chinese → Pinyin
- Hindi → Romanized Hindi
- Japanese → Romanized Japanese
- Korean → Katakana
- Korean → Romanized Korean
- Punjabi → Romanized Punjabi
Initial translation examples included English → Simplified Chinese, English → Japanese, Korean → Simplified Chinese, Korean → English, Korean → Japanese and Spanish → English. In June 2026, Apple announced additional pairings, including English → French, German, Italian, Korean and Spanish; French → English; and Japanese → English. It also listed pronunciation additions such as Arabic → Romanized Arabic, English → Hangul, English → Katakana, Japanese → Hangul and Simplified Mandarin Chinese → Katakana. These are announced or published examples, not a promise that every pairing is available for every listener or track. See Apple’s launch language examples and its 2026 expansion announcement.

Who will find it useful?
The tools are especially helpful for listeners who want to sing along before they can read a script, or understand a song without leaving Apple Music. That includes K-pop fans learning Korean, J-pop listeners using Romanized Japanese, Cantonese-music fans using Jyutping, and people exploring Hindi, Punjabi, Spanish and other international catalogs. Language learners can compare the original, translated and transliterated lines while listening.
The feature is not a BTS-only function. BTS helped illustrate the appeal in early coverage, but Apple designed the lyrics tools for multiple languages, scripts and genres. BGR’s report captured that early fan interest, while Apple’s announcements describe a broader rollout.
Why a song may not show the control
Seeing ordinary lyrics does not guarantee that translation or pronunciation assets exist. Apple says availability is song- and language-specific, and its support guidance identifies several common limits:

- The track is not from the Apple Music catalog.
- Lyrics are unavailable for that recording.
- The device is offline or has a connectivity problem.
- The song is downloaded and the required online lyrics asset is not available.
- The language, script, region or catalog version is not supported.
- The operating system or Apple Music app is out of date.
Try an online catalog track with confirmed lyrics, update the device, and reopen the lyrics view. If the button is present for one song but absent for another, that usually indicates track eligibility rather than a hardware fault. Apple’s support documentation specifically notes that translation and pronunciation may be unavailable for a particular song or language.
Why lyrics can qualify for one tool but not the other
A track may offer translation without pronunciation, pronunciation without translation, or one transliteration system but not another. Language direction matters too: support for English-to-Japanese does not imply support for Japanese-to-English on the same song or in the same region.

What “pronunciation” means in practice
Apple’s feature is a written aid, not spoken coaching. Depending on the language, it may use romanization, transliteration into another script, a phonetic approximation, Pinyin, Jyutping or another language-specific system. The display is intended for listening and sing-along use, so it may not capture every tonal distinction, regional accent, vocal contraction, slang form or the singer’s exact performance.

Romanization is approachable for beginners but can hide distinctions visible in the native script. For serious study, check the original lyrics and an authoritative language resource rather than treating Apple’s line as the sole pronunciation authority. This matters particularly for tonal languages and lyrics containing names, dialect, loanwords or deliberate wordplay.

Apple introduced the features with the iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26 generation, announced in June 2025 for the fall 2025 operating-system releases. The exact controls are not guaranteed to be identical on every Apple Music platform, and the documentation does not establish universal support for older iPhones, Android, Windows or web browsers. Apple TV documentation discusses the lyrics experience in the Apple TV and Apple Music Sing context. Its separate iPhone-as-microphone feature requires an iPhone 11 or later with a third-generation Apple TV 4K running the latest software; that requirement applies to the microphone function, not automatically to every lyrics feature. Details appear in Apple’s iOS 26 announcement and Apple TV announcement.
Because the tools use the catalog-based lyrics experience, an Apple Music subscription and catalog access are generally required. A subscription does not guarantee that every song has a translation or pronunciation asset. Apple’s current product information is at apple.com/apple-music; current pricing should be checked on the live subscription page.
How lyrics eligibility is created
Apple Music for Artists says submitting a song’s original static lyrics gives it the best opportunity to receive translation or transliteration. That is an eligibility opportunity, not a guarantee that Apple will publish either option for every territory or language. Artists and rights holders can review Apple’s guidance on sending lyrics to Apple Music and the iOS 26 lyrics updates at Apple Music for Artists.
When it is the right tool—and when it is not
- Good fit: singing along with unfamiliar scripts, checking a song’s broad meaning, comparing original and translated lines, or using music as an informal language-learning aid.
- Use caution: relying on it for exact literary translation, formal language study, dialect-sensitive pronunciation, tonal accuracy or cultural interpretation.
- Not the right expectation: an audio pronunciation lesson. Apple displays text; it does not describe this feature as a spoken tutor or pronunciation coach.
Apple Music’s Lyrics Translation and Lyrics Pronunciation make international songs easier to follow inside the player, but they are deliberately narrower than a universal translation service. Availability depends on the song, language direction, script, region and software version, while the output remains an approximation shaped by the demands of sung language.
