No. BritBox and Acorn TV are separate streaming services. They overlap in British and international mysteries and dramas, but they have different catalogs, apps, plans, account systems, and subscriptions. A BritBox subscription does not automatically include Acorn TV, and an Acorn TV subscription does not automatically include BritBox.
The short answer
- BritBox: a broad British-television destination covering dramas, comedies, mysteries, soaps, documentaries, lifestyle programs, classics, and newer releases.
- Acorn TV: a more curated international service centered on mysteries, crime dramas, thrillers, dramas, and imports from Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, and elsewhere.
- Overlap: real but incomplete. The same title, different seasons, or a co-production may appear on one service, both, a third-party channel, or neither depending on country and licensing date.
- Subscriptions: neither service should be treated as an automatic add-on to the other.
Acorn TV is identified as an AMC Networks targeted streaming service in the company’s filings, while BritBox operates as its own branded service with separate plans and apps. That corporate or distribution relationship does not make the subscriptions interchangeable. AMC Networks filing
What BritBox offers
BritBox’s US service positions itself as a large British-TV library, advertising more than 7,000 hours and programming across drama, crime and mystery, comedy, soaps, documentaries, lifestyle, and classic television. BritBox US Representative titles shown in its own materials include Vera, Death in Paradise, Sherlock, Father Brown, Shetland, The Bay, Keeping Up Appearances, Absolutely Fabulous, Downton Abbey, and Gavin & Stacey. These are illustrations, not a permanent promise that every season is available in every country. BritBox device and catalog information
That breadth makes BritBox the more natural starting point for viewers who want a general-purpose British-TV service rather than a service devoted mainly to crime and imported drama.

BritBox Standard and Premier
All BritBox plans include the full BritBox catalog. Premier is an enhanced plan, not a completely separate library. The US comparison lists selected early access to new releases, BBC Select documentaries, up to four simultaneous streams, downloads, and up to 4K UHD availability where supported. Standard allows up to two simultaneous streams. Not every program supports every resolution or download feature. BritBox plan comparison
US prices displayed on August 16, 2026 were $10.99 per month or $109.99 per year for Standard, and $149.99 per year for Premier. BritBox advertised a seven-day trial for eligible new customers. Prices, taxes, eligibility, and promotions can change.
What Acorn TV offers
Acorn TV describes itself as a service for television from Britain, Australia, Ireland, France, and other countries, with a strong emphasis on mysteries, dramas, thrillers, and distinctive international series. Its promotional examples include Midsomer Murders, Happy Valley, Doc Martin, and Brokenwood Mysteries. Acorn TV About Acorn TV signup
Acorn is not limited to “cozy” mysteries. Its lineup can include darker crime stories, limited series, originals, dramas, selected comedies, and productions from Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, continental Europe, and the UK. Its narrower identity is useful when your priority is imported mystery and drama rather than the widest possible British archive.

BritBox versus Acorn TV
Prices in this table are US observations from August 16, 2026. Catalogs and features vary by country, title, device, and billing route, and streaming rights change.
| Criterion | BritBox | Acorn TV |
|---|---|---|
| Core identity | Broad British-TV destination | Curated international mystery and drama service |
| Geographic emphasis | Primarily Britain and British television | Britain plus Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, and other markets |
| Genre range | Drama, comedy, mystery, soaps, documentaries, lifestyle, and classics | Mystery, crime, thriller, drama, international series, selected comedy and specials |
| US monthly price | $10.99 Standard | $9.99 |

| Premium tier | Premier adds features and BBC Select documentaries | No equivalent separate tier identified on the public US pages |
| Best fit | Viewers seeking breadth across British genres and eras | Viewers seeking international mysteries, crime dramas, and imports |
| Subscription relationship | Does not automatically include Acorn TV | Does not automatically include BritBox |
Acorn’s current public price is lower than BritBox Standard in this US snapshot, but that is a dated, market-specific comparison—not a permanent global rule.
Do they have the same shows?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Both services license British and international programs, so overlap is expected. A distributor may license a series to different services in different territories, a contract may move a title when it expires, and individual seasons can have separate rights. A show may also be present in a direct app but absent from an Amazon, Apple, or Roku channel version.

Search results and old comparison articles often describe a previous catalog state. Treat named programs as examples rather than permanent availability guarantees.
Which service should you choose?
Start with BritBox when breadth is the priority
- You want BBC- and ITV-associated dramas, comedies, mysteries, soaps, classics, documentaries, and lifestyle programming in one place.
- You watch across several British genres rather than mainly crime.
- You want Premier features such as early access, BBC Select documentaries, downloads, or four simultaneous streams.
Start with Acorn TV when international mystery is the priority
- Your watchlist is dominated by crime dramas, thrillers, character-led mysteries, and limited series.
- You especially want Australian, New Zealand, Irish, or European imports.
- You prefer a more specialized, curated service to a broad British-TV archive.
Subscribe to both only for genuine overlap in your watchlist
Make a list of five to ten must-watch titles and check each one on both services. If the list divides fairly evenly, both may be worthwhile. Otherwise, monthly rotation is often more economical: watch priority programs on one service, cancel, then subscribe to the other when its titles become the priority.
Devices, downloads, and offline viewing
Acorn lists Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, iPhone and iPad, Android TV, Android phones and tablets, Chromecast, browser viewing, Vizio televisions, and selected Samsung Smart TVs. Its help page specifies iOS 15 or later and Samsung models from 2017 onward in supported markets. Acorn compatible devices

Acorn says many programs can be downloaded for offline viewing on iOS and Android, but not every title qualifies. Downloads are tied to the device, may expire, and can be removed when a subscription ends. Acorn download restrictions BritBox likewise limits downloads and resolution by title and device.
Where are the services available?
Acorn’s help center lists the United States and US territories, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, while warning that catalogs and supported devices vary by location. Acorn availability by country BritBox pricing, catalogs, and plan names are also market-specific; US details in this article should not be applied automatically to Canada, the UK, Australia, or New Zealand.

A direct subscription gives you a relationship with BritBox or Acorn itself. A channel subscription through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, The Roku Channel, a smart-TV store, or a provider puts the service inside another company’s billing and viewing system.
| Route | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Direct app or website | Service-specific account, support, promotions, and usually the clearest view of its own plans and catalog | Separate app and billing relationship |
| Third-party channel | One interface, one bill, unified search, and possible platform-specific trials or bundles | Cancellation, trials, promotions, plan features, downloads, profiles, and device access may differ |
Acorn says Amazon subscribers can obtain credentials for other supported devices, but account setup and billing remain tied to the Amazon subscription route. Acorn Amazon subscription help Apple subscribers have a separate subscription pathway as well. Acorn iTunes subscription help

Common problems and fixes
A title advertised online is missing
- Search inside the service rather than relying on a search-engine result.
- Confirm the country and the exact season or episode.
- Check whether you use a direct subscription or a third-party channel.
- Look for alternate spellings or titles.
- Verify availability again before committing to annual billing.
An Amazon subscriber cannot sign in to the direct app
Third-party subscriptions can require account linking or setup before credentials work on other devices. Follow the provider’s account-creation instructions and keep billing management with Amazon.
A viewer expects every title to download or play in 4K
Downloads, resolution, and offline expiry are title- and device-dependent on both services. Check the individual program and device support rather than assuming the plan makes every feature universal.
