Tilly Norwood is a computer-generated character created by Eline Van der Velden, founder of Particle6 and its AI-talent offshoot Xicoia. After Van der Velden said talent agents had shown interest in representing Norwood, actors and SAG-AFTRA argued that marketing a synthetic character as an “actress” moves AI from a production tool toward a potential replacement for human performers. Van der Velden defended Tilly as art and experimentation, not a substitute for people. The dispute remains unresolved because the available reporting shows agent interest, not a completed agency signing or film contract.
What Tilly Norwood is—and is not
Tilly Norwood is a fictional, computer-generated persona presented by Xicoia, an AI-focused talent studio spun out of Particle6. Van der Velden, described in coverage as an actor, comedian, producer, technologist and company founder, is the creator associated with the project. Tilly is not a human performer, an autonomous person or evidence of a conventional acting career.
The company’s branding calls her an AI “actress,” but “AI-generated character” is the more precise description. That category can overlap with several different practices:
| Category | What it means | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
| AI-generated character | A wholly synthetic persona produced with generative systems. | There may be no single human whose performance is being presented as the character. |
| Virtual influencer | A fictional digital persona maintained through images, video and social-media activity. | Online branding does not establish employment, casting or talent representation. |
| Synthetic performer in a production | A generated persona used to carry scenes, dialogue or other conventional performer functions. | Labor agreements, consent, compensation and disclosure may become relevant. |
| Digitally altered human performance | A real actor’s likeness, voice, movement or performance is modified or extended digitally. | The human performer’s contractual rights and permission are central. |
Animation, puppetry, motion capture and digital doubles are not automatically equivalent to a fully synthetic generative performer.

What prompted the backlash
At the Zurich Summit in September 2025, Van der Velden reportedly said that multiple talent agents were interested in representing Tilly and that an announcement might follow in the coming months. Tilly was promoted through social media as an aspiring performer, and Van der Velden reportedly said she wanted the character to become the next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman. Variety reported the agent interest in its Zurich Summit coverage.
Those details made the story different from a private experiment or a visual-effects demonstration. Critics saw the language of “talent,” “career” and representation placing a synthetic character inside systems designed to hire and pay human performers.
How Van der Velden defended Tilly
In a statement posted on Instagram and shared through Tilly’s social account in late September 2025, Van der Velden said Tilly was “not a replacement for a human being,” but “a creative work” and “a piece of art.” She compared AI with a new creative tool or “paintbrush,” arguing that animation, puppetry and computer graphics had expanded storytelling rather than eliminating live acting.
Van der Velden also argued that Tilly should be judged as part of an AI-character genre instead of being compared directly with human actors. She emphasized that she is an actor herself and said AI cannot remove the craft and joy of human performance. In later comments, she described Tilly as a test of AI’s creative boundaries, stressing that making AI-generated films still requires ideas, taste, direction, judgment and substantial human time. She has also said audiences may eventually care more about a story than whether its performer is biological. Her later interview is covered by Variety.

Why actors rejected the “tool, not replacement” distinction
The objection is about likely use, not only stated intention. A creator can regard Tilly as an experiment, while a studio or agency could use a similar synthetic performer to avoid hiring, paying or bargaining with a human actor. No specific actor replacement is established in the available reporting, but critics focused on the precedent and the possibility of fewer auditions, roles, residuals and employment opportunities.
Public social-media responses included:
- Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who argued that Tilly was not actually an actress.
- Mara Wilson, who questioned why composite imagery was used instead of hiring living young women.
- Ralph Ineson, who replied with a blunt expletive.
- Melissa Barrera, who criticized the possibility of an agency representing Tilly and urged actors to leave that agency.
- Kiersey Clemons, who asked for the names of the interested agents.
- Lukas Gage, who mocked the idea of working with the character.
- Toni Collette, who responded with screaming emojis.
These were public comments by recognizable performers, not a representative survey. “Near-universal backlash” describes the intensity of the coverage and reaction; it is not a measured percentage of public opinion.
What SAG-AFTRA said
SAG-AFTRA said Tilly is a character generated by a computer program, not an actor. The union said the program was trained on professional performers’ work without permission or compensation and argued that a synthetic character has no life experience or emotion of its own. It opposed replacing human performers with synthetic performers and said creativity should remain human-centered. The union’s statement is reported by Variety.
The training-data allegation must be treated as the union’s assertion. The available coverage does not identify the datasets, establish whether material was licensed, or document whether particular faces, voices, movements or performances were copied. Nor does a union statement decide the legal status of Tilly.

SAG-AFTRA also warned that signatory producers must follow contractual notice and bargaining requirements when synthetic performers are used. That connects the controversy to the AI, digital-replica and synthetic-performance issues raised during the union’s 2023 strike, without meaning that every use of generative AI violates the resulting agreements.
Was Tilly Norwood signed by an agency?
Not on the evidence publicly described for this controversy. Reports say agents were interested or “circling” the project, and that Van der Velden anticipated a possible announcement. They do not establish a finalized agency contract, the identity of an interested agency, a casting, employment agreement or studio deal. “Reportedly attracted interest from talent agents” is accurate; “signed by an agency” is not confirmed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Tilly legally an actress?
There is no single universal answer because “actress” is being used in different ways. In ordinary publicity, it is the company’s label. In labor and contract settings, the practical questions are whether a human’s likeness, voice, movement or performance was used; whether an agreement covers the synthetic performer; and what notice, bargaining, consent and payment obligations apply.
SAG-AFTRA’s position indicates that productions using synthetic performers may trigger obligations under its agreements. That is not a court ruling that Tilly’s creation was illegal, nor proof that a particular performer’s identity was taken.

The larger Hollywood fault line
The Tilly dispute is best understood as a boundary question: when does AI remain a tool used by human filmmakers, and when is it presented as marketable talent competing for a worker’s place?
- AI-assisted filmmaking: Generative systems help with images, editing, previs or other tasks while humans perform and receive credit.
- Digital doubles: A production digitally alters or extends an identifiable human performer under negotiated rights.
- Virtual characters: A fictional persona may exist for marketing or storytelling without being represented as an employee.
- Fully synthetic performers: A generated character is positioned to obtain roles, representation or compensation that might otherwise go to a human.
Calling Tilly “talent” and seeking conventional representation made critics view the project as the last category, even though Van der Velden described it as the first steps of a new artistic medium. That tension—new technology using old labor-market language—is the central reason the “paintbrush” analogy did not settle the argument.
What to watch next
- Whether an agency publicly announces representation for Tilly.
- Whether she is cast in a conventional film or television production.
- Whether Particle6 or Xicoia disclose training data, licensing and the human work behind the character.
- How unions define notice, consent, compensation and bargaining for synthetic characters.
- Whether productions clearly distinguish AI characters from human performers in credits and marketing.
- Whether audiences accept fully synthetic performers beyond promotional experiments.
A later development: Tilly’s music video
A subsequent AI-generated Tilly music video produced another wave of criticism. Later coverage also included a claim that 18 real people worked on the production. That follow-up should not be confused with the original September backlash over agent interest and the “AI actress” branding; it is reported separately by Futurism/Yahoo.
