YouTube marked its 20th anniversary on April 23, 2025, the date co-founder Jawed Karim uploaded Me at the Zoo, a 19-second clip that YouTube treats as its first upload. The anniversary roundup combined short-lived birthday effects with everyday viewing tools and a look at YouTube’s expansion into television, Shorts, podcasts, shopping and creator businesses.
Because the celebration happened in 2025, not 2026, some birthday extras may no longer appear. YouTube’s own rollout guidance also says availability can vary by account, device, app version, country and staged testing.
What happened on April 23, 2025?
YouTube’s anniversary date is tied to the first uploaded video rather than simply to a corporate incorporation or website-launch date. On April 23, 2005, Jawed Karim uploaded Me at the Zoo. YouTube published its anniversary announcement on the same date, presenting the 19-second zoo clip as the starting point for two decades of user-uploaded video.
The official announcement mixed celebration items, existing product features and broader 2025 strategy. Calling every item a brand-new permanent release would be misleading.

YouTube’s anniversary announcement is the primary source for the birthday details and the figures below.
Birthday extras: what was temporary?
| Item | Who could see or use it | Status and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| 20th-anniversary logo | Visitors during the celebration | Limited anniversary branding, not a permanent logo redesign |
| Birthday scrubber effects | Viewers of selected videos | Temporary effects on selected content |
| Birthday like animation | Viewers who liked selected videos | Celebration animation; selection and duration were limited |
| “bday” desktop easter egg | Users on a desktop watch page | Event-specific and not guaranteed to work after the anniversary |
| YouTube TV “zen” channel | YouTube TV members | Birthday-themed channel available for 48 hours |
| Playables welcome screen | Users of YouTube Playables | Celebratory welcome experience, not a permanent new game feature |
| Livestream birthday gifts | Eligible livestream viewers and creators | Items such as a cake slice or party hat were offered for one week |
These extras were designed as overlays, easter eggs or short events. A current viewer should not expect the anniversary logo, scrubber animation, “bday” trigger or zen channel to remain available.
Viewer features YouTube highlighted
The anniversary post also drew attention to tools intended for ordinary viewing. Some were existing or rolling out features that YouTube showcased in the birthday roundup, rather than functions that all launched on April 23.
Long-press 2x playback
On supported versions of the player, pressing and holding anywhere on the video temporarily plays it at 2x speed. Device and app behavior can differ.

Screen lock
Screen locking is designed to prevent accidental taps and interruptions while a video plays, particularly useful on phones and tablets.
Sleep timer
A sleep timer lets viewers stop playback after a chosen period, a practical option for music, podcasts or bedtime viewing.
Voice replies and interactive comments
YouTube highlighted voice replies to comments, which had been available to a small group of creators. That wording matters: access was not presented as a universal feature for every account.
YouTube documents why people can see different functions in its experiments and staged-rollout guidance. An absent option does not necessarily mean a device is broken; it may be unavailable in that market, account cohort or app version.

The anniversary numbers, with dates attached
- More than 20 billion uploaded videos: YouTube said it had passed this total as of April 2025. The figure includes music, Shorts, podcasts and other formats and is a company-reported snapshot, not a live 2026 counter.
- More than 20 million uploads per day: YouTube described this as an average as of April 2025, not a guaranteed total on every day.
- Two related 10th anniversaries: YouTube Music and YouTube Kids also reached 10 years in 2025.
- The first upload: Me at the Zoo runs for 19 seconds.
A logo origin story
YouTube says its original logo drew inspiration from a combination of CalTrain commuter-rail branding and the design of TV Guide. This is YouTube’s own account of the logo’s influences, so it should be attributed rather than treated as independently established design history.
How YouTube changed from home videos to a media ecosystem
- Home-video sharing: The early service made it easy for people to upload short personal clips.
- Viral and music video distribution: Clips spread beyond friends and family, while music and entertainment became central to discovery.
- Creator channels and the Partner Program: Regular publishing and monetization turned channels into sustained media businesses.
- Long-form, livestreaming, gaming and education: YouTube became a destination for shows, live events, gaming videos and instructional content.
- Shorts and mobile viewing: Short vertical video added a mobile-first discovery format.
- Podcasts, connected television and shopping: The service increasingly functions as an audio-video platform, a TV destination and a commerce layer for creators and brands.
YouTube’s 20th-anniversary culture and trends report describes creators and fans building a new mainstream. It points to formats such as gaming “Let’s Play” videos as examples of internet-native entertainment moving into broader popular culture.
Why television matters to YouTube
In YouTube CEO Neal Mohan’s 2025 priorities post, he said television had surpassed mobile as the primary device for YouTube viewing in the United States by watch time. The same post said Nielsen had ranked YouTube first in U.S. streaming watch time for two years.
Those are U.S.-specific, attributed statements about watch time. They do not mean that televisions have more users than phones worldwide, or that every viewing session happens on a TV.

YouTube’s television push includes features such as YouTube TV multiview and Key Plays. The strategy reflects a service that now competes for living-room attention as well as phone screens.

The birthday post was not a single creator-economy relaunch. However, YouTube’s broader 2025 priorities described the direction of the next phase:
- More monetization routes: Advertising is joined by memberships, livestream gifts, shopping and other creator revenue tools.
- Hype: YouTube described Hype as a way for fans to support up-and-coming creators, with expansion planned to more markets.
- Podcasts: YouTube continued investing in video-podcast discovery and production tools.
- AI-assisted creation and discovery: AI was presented as a way to help make and find content, while questions about originality and quality remain important.
- Shopping and brand tools: YouTube is building links between creators, merchants and products.
Later announcements at Made on YouTube 2025 added AI creation tools, podcast features, Shorts tools, brand links and wider Shopping support. Those announcements belong to the later 2025 product calendar, not to the April birthday event itself.
Eligibility, revenue terms and market access vary by program and location. A creator considering monetization should check the current YouTube Partner Program requirements and the relevant YouTube Shopping guidance rather than assuming that an announcement guarantees access.

What still works after the anniversary?
The safest distinction is between the event and the underlying platform:
- Birthday branding and animations: Treat them as ended or uncertain because they were limited celebration elements.
- “bday” easter egg: It was tied to the desktop celebration and may no longer function.
- Playback speed, screen lock and sleep timer: These are general product tools, but their exact controls and availability depend on device, app, account and rollout.
- Creator monetization, Shopping and fan features: They continue to evolve, with country, channel, program and eligibility restrictions.
For the latest availability, use YouTube’s support pages and the controls shown in your own account. The platform explicitly warns that experiments and gradual releases can produce different experiences for different users.
The larger meaning of YouTube at 20
The anniversary is less about a single redesign than about a change in what YouTube is. It began with a short personal upload, then absorbed viral culture, professional entertainment, gaming, education and live video. At 20, it also operates across Shorts, podcasts, connected-TV viewing, shopping and businesses built around individual creators.
That expansion brings trade-offs. More ways to earn can also mean more eligibility rules and operational complexity. AI tools may lower production barriers while making originality harder to judge. Professional and commercial content can improve quality and discovery while making the service feel less like the informal user-uploaded-video site of 2005.
