You can create a Smart Playlist in Apple Music on a Mac or Windows PC, then access it on an iPhone or iPad through Sync Library. A Smart Playlist automatically selects songs from your music library according to rules such as genre, rating, favorite status, year, play count or date added. Apple’s current iPhone Music documentation provides controls for ordinary, manually built playlists—not for creating Smart Playlist rules.
What a Smart Playlist does
An ordinary playlist contains songs you add and remove yourself. A Smart Playlist is criteria-driven: Apple Music evaluates items in your library and includes those that meet the rules. With Live updating enabled, it reevaluates the playlist when library items or their metadata change.
Smart Playlists work from your library, not automatically from every track in the Apple Music catalog. Add catalog songs to your library before expecting library rules to select them. Apple explains the distinction between ordinary and Smart Playlists in its playlist guide for Mac and playlist guide for Windows.
Choose a Smart Playlist when membership should change automatically or when you need metadata-based organization. Choose an ordinary playlist when you want fixed membership, manual ordering, collaboration or direct drag-and-drop control. Apple says songs cannot be added to or removed from a Smart Playlist directly; change its rules instead.

Create a Smart Playlist on Mac
- Open the Music app.
- Choose File > New > Smart Playlist.
- In the first rule row, choose a field, an operator and a value. For example, choose Genre, contains and Rock.
- Select Add to create another rule.
- When there is more than one top-level rule, choose whether the playlist matches all or any rules.
- Optionally turn on Limit, Match only checked items and Live updating.
- Click OK, then select the new playlist and use its edit control to name it.
To change it later, select the Smart Playlist, open its more-options control and choose Edit Rules. Apple’s current Mac instructions are in Create, edit and delete Smart Playlists in Music on Mac.
Create a Smart Playlist on Windows
- Open the Apple Music app for Windows.
- Select the Add button beside Playlists.
- Choose New Smart Playlist.
- Configure the first field, operator and value, then use Add or Remove for additional rules.
- Choose all or any for multiple top-level rules.
- Enable any desired limit, checked-item filter or Live updating option.
- Select OK and enter a name at the top of the window.
Select Edit Rules whenever you need to change the criteria. To delete the playlist, select it and choose Delete from Library. See Apple’s Smart Playlist guide for Windows for the Windows interface.
Build rules that produce the results you expect
Choose fields, operators and values
Depending on the selected field and app version, Apple Music may offer controls such as Genre, Favorite, Year, Rating, Play Count, Date Added, checked status and last-played information. Operators also vary: a text field may offer contains, while a number or date field may offer equality, ranges or relative periods. Treat the labels visible in your installation as authoritative.
“All” versus “any”
- All: a song must satisfy every top-level rule.
- Any: a song may satisfy at least one top-level rule.
For example, “Favorite is true” plus “Genre contains Rock” with all returns favorite rock songs. Using any would also include every favorite song and every rock song.

Use nested rules for mixed logic
Nested criteria let you express logic such as: Genre contains Rock and Rating is high and (Year is before 1990 or Year is after 2000). On Mac, hold Option while selecting the add-rule control. On Windows, hold Alt while selecting the nest control. Apple documents these controls in its Mac and Windows guides.
Limit size and choose selection order
Turn on Limit when you want a maximum number of songs or a maximum duration. Then choose the quantity or time and the ordering criterion, such as most recently added. Apple gives a two-hour, recency-based example; the available limit controls depend on the app version.
Match only checked items
This filter restricts results to library items with a checkmark. It can exclude songs you keep in the library but do not want played or synced. Unchecking a song does not delete it from the library.
Turn on Live updating for changing collections
Enable Live updating for collections such as new additions, unplayed music or favorites you have not heard recently. It does not discover music with artificial intelligence or search the entire catalog; it reevaluates the library against your rules.

Useful Smart Playlist examples
- Recently added: set Date Added to a recent period.
- Unplayed music: set Play Count to 0, if that field is offered.
- Favorite workout tracks: use Favorite is true and Genre contains your chosen genre, with all.
- Short commute mix: match a genre, then limit the total duration.
- High-rated library: set Rating at or above your chosen threshold.
- Recently neglected favorites: combine Favorite with a Last Played condition when that field is available.
Get the playlist onto an iPhone or iPad
Create and configure the playlist on the Mac or Windows computer first. To make it available elsewhere:
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on each device.
- Turn on Sync Library on the computer.
- Turn on Sync Library on the iPhone or iPad.
- Allow the library to finish updating before checking the playlist.
Apple says Sync Library requires an Apple Music subscription or iTunes Match subscription and is not a backup service. Follow Apple’s Sync Library instructions. Apple’s Windows documentation also notes that Smart Playlist rules are applied on the computer or device to which the playlist is downloaded, so contents can differ temporarily while metadata, play counts or cloud changes synchronize. Apple’s iPhone instructions describe manually created playlists through Library > Playlists > New Playlist. They do not document the Mac/Windows Smart Playlist editor. Use Get started with Music on iPhone and Intro to playlists on iPhone for ordinary playlists.
Troubleshoot common problems
“New Smart Playlist” is missing
- On Mac, use File > New > Smart Playlist.
- On Windows, use Add beside Playlists, then New Smart Playlist.
- If you are on iPhone, iPad, Android or the web, create it on a Mac or Windows PC instead.
- Ignore older iTunes-only instructions if you are using the current Windows Apple Music app.
The playlist is empty
- Confirm that matching songs are added to your library.
- Check spelling and metadata values such as genre, year and rating.
- Make sure all was not selected when you needed any.
- Review the limit and Match only checked items filter.
- Wait for cloud-library synchronization to finish.

It does not update
- Verify that Live updating is enabled.
- Confirm the metadata or play history changed in the library being evaluated.
- Check the same Apple Account and Sync Library setting on each device.
- Allow time for the cloud library to complete its update; cross-device changes are not guaranteed to appear instantly.
You cannot remove one song
That is normal. Change the rule, alter the song’s metadata, uncheck it when the checked-item filter is active, or use an ordinary playlist when individual membership must be controlled.
The iPhone shows an older selection
Check internet access, the Apple Account, Sync Library and the library-update status. The computer may have reevaluated the rules while the iPhone is still displaying an unsynchronized copy.
Catalog, purchased and imported files differ
Subscription tracks, purchases and local files can have different availability and synchronization behavior. Keep an independent backup of local music; Sync Library is not a backup service.

Playlist Playground
Playlist Playground is a separate, prompt- or mood-based AI feature, not a deterministic rule engine. Apple documents it as beta and limits availability to eligible Apple Music subscribers aged 13 or older in the United States and in English. Shortcuts and other workflows
Shortcuts-based automations can assemble music in some situations, but they are alternatives rather than native Smart Playlist creation and may not reproduce every desktop rule, limit or synchronization behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a Smart Playlist on iPhone?
Apple’s current iPhone Music documentation does not include the Smart Playlist rule editor. Create it in Music on a Mac or in Apple Music on Windows, then use Sync Library to access it on iPhone.
Do Smart Playlists update automatically?
Only when Live updating is enabled, and updates depend on changes in the evaluated library and on synchronization between devices.
Can I limit a Smart Playlist to 50 songs or one hour?
Yes. Enable Limit, then choose the available song-count or duration setting and the ordering criterion.
