Roku has not confirmed native Howdy apps for Apple TV, Google TV, Fire TV, Samsung, LG, game consoles, or other television platforms.
What Roku originally promised
Howdy launched in the United States on August 5, 2025, as Roku’s own ad-free subscription video-on-demand service. At CES on January 7, 2026, Wood said Roku intended to distribute it “everywhere” and take it beyond Roku’s hardware and operating system. Roku did not provide a platform-by-platform roadmap at the time.
The important distinction is between that broad ambition and what has actually launched. Roku subsequently brought Howdy to Amazon Prime Video on March 24, 2026, then released standalone iPhone, iPad, and Android apps on March 31. The original report was accurate when published, but it is no longer correct to describe expansion as merely a future possibility.

Roku’s support guidance explains that subscriptions purchased directly from another provider are managed by that provider rather than Roku. In practical terms, subscribe through the ecosystem where you expect to watch most often: Roku for Roku-billed access, or Amazon for the Prime Video version.

What Howdy is for $2.99
Howdy costs $2.99 per month in the United States. Roku presented that as the standard price, not a temporary introductory promotion. No annual plan is identified in the cited materials, and applicable taxes may be added. Roku says you can cancel at any time; cancellation stops renewal while access generally continues through the end of the current billing period. The service is marketed as ad-free. That describes the programming inside the subscription; it does not mean the Roku operating system, The Roku Channel, or the Prime Video interface will contain no promotional material around it.
A library service, not a live-TV bundle
Roku positions Howdy as a low-cost complement to larger, more expensive streaming subscriptions rather than a replacement for Netflix, Max, Disney+, or a live-TV package. Its emphasis is recognizable library entertainment: classic comedies, dramas, romantic comedies, medical series, thrillers, and feel-good films.

At launch, Roku described thousands of titles and nearly 10,000 hours. Its March 2026 Prime Video announcement described more than 10,000 hours, with programming from Disney Entertainment, FilmRise, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Roku Originals. Those are company-provided catalog figures, and licensing means both the total and individual titles can change.

These examples come from Roku’s launch and expansion announcements, not a guarantee that every title will remain available in every country or on every billing platform.
Why Roku created a paid service alongside The Roku Channel
The Roku Channel is primarily a free, advertising-supported service, while Howdy is a paid, ad-free offering. Roku executives say they see viewers looking for inexpensive entertainment without the heavier ad loads and rising prices associated with many streaming services.

In its first-quarter 2026 earnings discussion, Roku described Howdy as serving that affordable ad-free segment and said a growing audience could support further content investment. Those are Roku’s strategic claims, not independently verified subscriber or profitability results. Roku has not published a standalone Howdy subscriber count or detailed financial performance.

- Apple TV
- Google TV or Android TV as a television app
- Amazon Fire TV as a standalone Howdy app
- Samsung smart TVs
- LG smart TVs
- Vizio smart TVs
- PlayStation or Xbox
Prime Video availability should not be confused with a native Howdy app. On a compatible television, subscribers use Amazon’s Prime Video interface and Amazon billing. A device that supports Prime Video may therefore offer a route to Howdy without offering a downloadable Howdy application.

Practical limitations before you subscribe
Billing can be split between ecosystems
A Roku-billed subscription and an Amazon-billed Prime Video subscription can involve different account management, cancellation screens, and receipts. Choose one route rather than subscribing twice, and manage cancellation through the provider that charged you.
Mobile does not automatically mean television casting
The Android Google Play listing supports phones, tablets, web browsers, Roku TVs, and Roku players, with continue-watching and cross-device synchronization. However, a Roku developer response dated July 27, 2026, said casting was not available in the mobile app at that time. App features can change, so Chromecast-style casting users should verify current support before relying on a phone as their television source.
Availability varies by territory and licensing window
The United States has the clearest documented lineup. Roku confirms Howdy on its Mexican platform, but the available sources do not establish that every U.S. distribution method, title, or billing option is also offered in Mexico. A film promoted at launch can also leave when a license expires.

Is Howdy worth $2.99?
It makes sense if you want
- A very inexpensive ad-free add-on rather than another full-price streaming subscription.
- Recognizable library movies and older television programming.
- Monthly flexibility and cancellation without a long-term commitment.
- Access without buying a Roku device, using the web, mobile apps, or Prime Video.
- One-screen billing through Amazon if you already use Prime Video.
Look elsewhere if you need
- Large volumes of new prestige series or current theatrical releases.
- Live news, sports, or a traditional channel bundle.
- A native app on Apple TV, Samsung, LG, Fire TV, Google TV, or a game console.
- Guaranteed casting from a mobile device.
- Evidence that the service is a proven major commercial success; Roku has not disclosed the numbers needed to establish that.
Roku hardware is optional. If you are already considering a Roku player or Roku TV for broader television streaming, the company’s official product pages are Roku players and Roku TVs. Buying a device solely for a $2.99 subscription is harder to justify when web, mobile, and Prime Video access are available.
How Howdy compares with free alternatives
The Roku Channel (roku.com/whats-on/the-roku-channel), Tubi (tubitv.com), and Pluto TV (pluto.tv) avoid a monthly fee but are ad-supported. Frndly TV (frndlytv.com) is a paid live-TV service aimed at family-oriented channels, making it a different proposition from Howdy’s on-demand, ad-free library. Netflix (netflix.com) offers a broader premium catalog at a different price and is not a direct low-cost comparison.
Bottom line for the “coming to other platforms” claim
Roku’s January 2026 promise has become reality in stages. Howdy now works beyond Roku hardware through the web, iOS, Android, and Amazon Prime Video, and Roku confirms its platform in Mexico. The unresolved part is the breadth of native television support: Roku still has not announced apps for the major competing TV platforms. At $2.99 per month, Howdy is best understood as a small, ad-free library add-on whose value depends on the titles you want and the devices you already own.
