“YouTube Reels” is not the verified name of a current standalone YouTube product. YouTube’s official short-form format is YouTube Shorts: vertical or square videos of up to three minutes that can appear in the Shorts Feed, search, the homepage and other YouTube surfaces. The phrase usually reflects confusion with Instagram Reels or Snapchat Stories, rather than a documented disappearing-video feature on YouTube.
This guide explains what Shorts are, how to create and measure them, how monetization works, and why a Snapchat Stories-like “YouTube Reels” tool should be treated as unconfirmed.
What does “YouTube Reels” mean?
YouTube’s current official documentation calls its short-form video product Shorts, not Reels. I could not verify a current YouTube help page or announcement for a product named “YouTube Reels.” Some search results and third-party articles use the phrase, including this article describing an alleged Snapchat Stories-like tool, but that claim is not corroborated by the official YouTube sources cited here.
Use the names precisely: YouTube Shorts for YouTube’s short-form videos, Instagram Reels for Instagram’s product, and Snapchat Stories for Snapchat’s time-limited story format. Until YouTube publishes first-party documentation, do not present “YouTube Reels” as an established feature or assume that YouTube has a disappearing 24-hour post format with that name.

Similar vertical-video formats do not mean that the platforms use the same recommendation, rights, analytics or payment systems.
What YouTube Shorts are
Shorts are short-form videos made or uploaded to YouTube. YouTube says eligible Shorts may be vertical or square and can run for up to three minutes. Viewers may encounter them in the Shorts Feed, YouTube search, the homepage, channel pages, subscriptions, notifications and supported televisions, consoles and streaming devices. Shorts are not automatically deleted after 24 hours. Their visibility follows the settings and actions applied to the video and channel, rather than a built-in Snapchat Stories expiration.

How to create a YouTube Short in the mobile app
- Open the YouTube app and sign in.
- Tap Create.
- Select Short.
- Hold the capture button to record, or tap it to start and tap again to stop.
- Add a title and choose the privacy setting.
- Choose the audience setting: Yes, it’s made for kids or No, it’s not made for kids.
- Tap Upload Short, or save a draft.
You can also upload an eligible vertical video from a phone or computer. YouTube’s help page lists 1080p as the maximum upload resolution for Shorts. YouTube Studio is useful for publishing and analytics, but its controls are not identical to every camera feature in the mobile app.
If the Short option is missing
A missing button does not prove that a “Reels” feature has been disabled. Check these practical possibilities:
- Update the YouTube mobile app and confirm that you are signed in.
- Try uploading an eligible vertical or square video instead of recording in the in-app camera.
- Check for age, supervised-account, regional or other feature-access limits.
- Confirm that you are using the main YouTube app rather than a surface with reduced creation tools.
- Use YouTube Studio to publish and inspect analytics, while recognizing that Studio may not expose the mobile camera’s full toolset.
- Consider whether you are actually looking for a temporary Stories-like post. YouTube’s documented product for short-form video is Shorts.
Features can also appear at different times because of phased rollouts, account type, device or platform differences.

How long can a YouTube Short be?
For standard channels, YouTube says square or vertical videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 can be categorized as Shorts when they are no longer than three minutes. Videos uploaded before that date remain treated as long-form videos. Separate rules apply to Official Artist Channels and channels linked to music Content Owners; YouTube identifies December 8, 2025 as a relevant date for those channels. “Up to three minutes” is not a guarantee that every three-minute upload will behave identically. Aspect ratio, upload date, channel type, copyright claims and music usage can affect classification or monetization. Under YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies, a claimed Short longer than one minute may be blocked and ineligible for monetization.

Beginning March 31, 2025, YouTube began counting a Shorts view whenever the Short starts to play or replay, without a minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube retained Engaged views as a more selective analytics metric showing viewers who chose to continue watching.

That distinction matters when comparing reports. A current public view total should not be treated as directly equivalent to an older Shorts total without checking whether the report uses views or Engaged views. YouTube also says that, beginning in April 2026, views from image posts appearing in the Shorts Feed count toward the total view count shown on a channel page, while individual image-post views are not displayed separately. A Short does not earn money simply because it appears in the Shorts Feed. A creator must meet YouTube Partner Program requirements, be accepted into YPP and accept the Shorts Monetization Module.
Shorts advertising works through a pool of revenue from ads shown between videos in the Shorts Feed, rather than a conventional ad attached to each individual Short. YouTube accounts for music-licensing costs, allocates the pool using eligible engaged views and other factors, and says monetizing creators keep 45% of their allocated amount. Eligible Shorts viewing can also participate in YouTube Premium revenue sharing. This is not 45% of every impression or a guaranteed amount per view.

Current YPP thresholds
YouTube’s partner-program explanation lists a lower entry tier for certain fan-funding and product-promotion features at:
- 500 subscribers, plus either 3,000 valid public watch hours on long-form videos in the relevant period or 3 million valid public Shorts views in the relevant period.
For broader ad-revenue sharing, it lists:
- 1,000 subscribers, plus either 4,000 valid public watch hours or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the relevant period.
These figures do not guarantee approval. Requirements can vary by feature, geography and policy changes, so check the current YouTube Partner Program information before applying. YouTube’s overview is also available at this official explanation.
Content that can fail monetization review
- Reuploaded videos from another platform.
- Unedited film or television clips.
- Compilations with little or no original contribution.
- Artificial, automated or bot-generated views.
- Material that violates advertiser-friendly guidelines.
- Copyright-claimed material, particularly Shorts longer than one minute.
- Repetitious or reused content that does not meet YouTube’s originality requirements.
Adding captions, cropping, an AI voice or a reaction does not automatically make reused footage monetizable. YouTube evaluates originality and meaningful transformation under its policies.
What creators should expect from the Shorts format
Advantages
- A large built-in discovery surface through the Shorts Feed and other YouTube pages.
- A quick mobile recording and publishing workflow.
- Potential to direct viewers to a broader channel and related long-form work.
- Possible access to Shorts ad and Premium revenue after meeting YPP requirements.
Limitations
- Shorts Feed revenue is pooled and is not equivalent to a conventional ad placed beside a long-form video.
- Public view totals now include starts and replays, so headline numbers may not match older measurement conventions.
- Engaged views, rights clearance, originality and advertiser suitability remain important to performance and monetization.
- Rapid discovery does not guarantee comparable long-form watch time, subscribers or conversions.
Recent Shorts interface changes
YouTube announced a rolling Shorts-player update on June 25, 2026, including a Clear Screen mode that hides playback overlays. Interface changes do not change the product’s name: YouTube continues to describe the format as Shorts. Details are in the official YouTube announcement.

If someone says “YouTube Reels,” they probably mean YouTube Shorts. Shorts are YouTube’s documented vertical-video product, can remain on a channel rather than disappearing after a day, and may run for up to three minutes under current rules. A Snapchat Stories-like, disappearing YouTube feature called “Reels” has not been verified in the official documentation cited here, so treat claims about such a tool as unconfirmed.
