Use HandBrake for accessible, unprotected DVDs; use MakeMKV when you need title extraction from a readable commercial disc; and combine MakeMKV with HandBrake when you want both a high-fidelity master and a smaller everyday file. These tools have no per-disc fee or subscription, but “unlimited” does not override copy-protection law, beta-key limits, storage needs, damaged discs, or hardware compatibility.
Choose the method that matches your DVD
| Method | Best for | What it produces | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| HandBrake | Home-authored or unprotected DVDs, DVD folders and ISO images | New MP4, MKV or WebM file | Does not bypass copy protection and always re-encodes video |
| MakeMKV | Extracting readable DVD titles while retaining original streams | MKV files with chapters and selected tracks | Large files; beta operation and registration terms can change |
| MakeMKV plus HandBrake | A durable master plus a smaller playback copy | Archival MKV and compressed MP4/MKV | Needs extra storage and a second processing step |
| libdvdcss-based workflow | Some CSS-encrypted discs, where lawful and technically supported | Depends on the application used afterward | Compatibility and legal treatment vary; it does not defeat every protection system |
| ISO or DVD-folder backup | Preserving menus and disc structure | ISO image or complete VIDEO_TS folder |
Large, less convenient for ordinary device playback |
Only copy discs you own or are authorized to reproduce. In the United States, bypassing DVD protection can raise Digital Millennium Copyright Act issues; VideoLAN describes the subject as controversial and advises uncertain users to consult a lawyer (VideoLAN legal guidance). Free software does not make an otherwise unauthorized copy lawful.
What “ripping” can mean
- Disc copying: duplicating the disc files or making an ISO image.
- Title extraction: selecting a movie or episode and placing its existing streams in a container such as MKV.
- Transcoding: decoding and re-encoding video into a smaller or more compatible file.
- Playback: opening a disc folder, ISO, or video file in a player.
MakeMKV primarily extracts and remuxes. HandBrake primarily transcodes. A large MakeMKV file is therefore expected, not evidence of a failed rip.
Method 1: HandBrake for unprotected DVDs
HandBrake is free, open source, runs locally, and requires no account or subscription (project information). It can open accessible DVD structures, but its documentation states that it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection (supported source formats). It always creates a newly encoded file and supports MP4, MKV and WebM (HandBrake overview).

Step-by-step
- Download HandBrake from handbrake.fr. Avoid third-party download sites; the project warns that unofficial builds may be scams.
- Insert the DVD, mount its ISO, or copy its
VIDEO_TSfolder to a local drive. - Open HandBrake and choose the optical disc, folder, or mounted image as the source.
- Wait for the scan, then select the correct title. For a movie, compare duration; for a television disc, select each episode individually. Preview short or confusing titles when necessary.
- Choose a general-purpose preset appropriate for the target device.
- Select the required audio, commentary and subtitle tracks. DVD subtitles are often image-based, so test them on the intended player.
- Choose MP4 for broad device compatibility or MKV for flexible track and subtitle handling.
- Set the destination filename and folder, then start the encode.
- Play the result—including dialogue, subtitles and chapters—before deleting or recycling the source.
If HandBrake cannot scan the source
- Open the copied
VIDEO_TSfolder instead of the physical disc. - Try another optical drive and clean the disc carefully.
- Check for region mismatch, unusual authoring, damage or commercial copy protection.
- Do not expect a different preset to bypass protection. HandBrake alone is not the appropriate solution for most protected commercial DVDs.
Method 2: MakeMKV for DVD extraction
MakeMKV converts DVD and Blu-ray content into MKV while retaining most disc information, including selected tracks and chapters (official description). The official download page listed MakeMKV 1.18.4, dated June 15, 2026, with Windows and macOS downloads and Linux support through the project’s distribution channels (download page).
Step-by-step
- Download the current release only from makemkv.com/download.
- Install it for Windows, macOS or Linux, then insert the DVD.
- Select the optical drive and let MakeMKV read the disc.
- Expand the title list. Choose the main feature or the individual episode titles; do not assume the longest title is genuine.
- Expand each title and select the desired video, language, commentary, subtitle and chapter tracks.
- Choose a folder with ample free space and start the conversion.
- Play the resulting MKV and verify the tracks before changing or deleting the source.
MakeMKV’s download information estimates about 6 GB for a typical DVD movie. Its output is not time- or usage-limited, but the beta program stops functioning after roughly 60 days and may require a current beta key or updated release. The purchase page describes DVD and AVCHD conversion or streaming as free without a usage limit, while Blu-ray functionality becomes shareware after the trial period; it also says a registration key has no expiration or subscription. That page currently reports that purchases are temporarily unavailable, so do not assume a permanent key can be obtained immediately (purchase terms).
When MakeMKV output is too large
Open the verified MKV in HandBrake and encode a smaller MP4 or MKV. Keep the original extraction until the compressed copy has been checked; re-encoding can introduce artifacts, especially in dark scenes, fast motion, film grain and animation.

Why the two-stage workflow is often best
| Need | MakeMKV | HandBrake |
|---|---|---|
| Extract titles from a readable disc | Strong fit | Not its primary role |
| Keep original video and audio streams | Yes, without re-encoding | No; it encodes a new file |
| Reduce storage size | Not a main goal | Strong fit |
| Retain multiple tracks and chapters | Yes, when selected | Yes, after a readable source exists |
| Output containers | MKV | MP4, MKV or WebM |
Reading the disc once into an MKV separates unreliable optical-drive work from compression. You can retry different HandBrake settings without repeatedly stressing a marginal disc, while retaining a source-quality file for future formats.
libdvdcss and VLC: useful in limited roles
libdvdcss is a GPL-licensed VideoLAN library intended to access DVDs using CSS-related methods. Its documentation identifies version 1.6.0, broad platform support and cases where it may fail (libdvdcss documentation; developer information). It does not handle every protection system, and installation and packaging differ by operating system.
VLC is primarily a media player and testing utility, not the most dependable collection-archiving workflow (VLC overview). It may play many DVD sources, but unusual authoring, region behavior and protection can still cause failures. Consider libdvdcss only when you understand the law where you live, have an authorized source, and can obtain it from an appropriate package source. Do not assume that installing it makes every commercial DVD compatible with HandBrake.

Choose the right output
- MP4: Usually the safest choice for phones, televisions, tablets and media servers, provided the selected codecs and subtitles are supported.
- MKV: More flexible for multiple audio tracks, chapters and subtitles; often preferable as an archival or intermediate file.
- ISO or complete DVD folder: Best when menus, extras and disc structure matter. It is less convenient for ordinary playback and consumes more storage.
The container does not determine quality by itself. Codec, bitrate, audio format, subtitle type and device support matter as well.

Copy-protection error
Commercial CSS, unusual navigation, disc damage, drive issues and region behavior can all trigger errors. HandBrake officially does not bypass protection. For an authorized, readable source, first obtain a usable folder or image with a tool appropriate to your jurisdiction, then process that source. Do not imply that repeatedly changing presets will solve protection.

Missing audio
Select the desired language and commentary tracks explicitly. A device may not support the original codec or passthrough format, so retain the original track in the archival MKV and add a compatible fallback when needed.
Missing subtitles
DVD subtitles are commonly bitmap images. Forced subtitles and full-language subtitles may be separate tracks, and a track supported in MKV may not behave the same in every MP4 workflow. Test actual dialogue and subtitle display on the target device.
Read errors or insufficient space
- Try another drive and clean the disc.
- Copy or extract locally before transcoding from a marginal disc.
- Reserve roughly 6 GB for a typical DVD movie, plus working space for an encoded copy.
- Remember that a collection of 100 DVDs can require hundreds of gigabytes before compression, with temporary space needed for intermediate files.
MakeMKV beta expiration
When the beta period ends, download the current official release and use the current official registration information. Avoid random key-sharing sites, cracked builds and system-date workarounds.

macOS security approval
The MakeMKV page notes that its macOS build is not Apple-signed. Use the normal macOS approval path when prompted; do not broadly disable Gatekeeper or other system protections.
Region restrictions
Region behavior involves both the disc and the drive. Software may or may not read a region-mismatched disc, and repeatedly changing a drive’s hardware region can create lockout problems. No free application universally removes region restrictions.
What “free and unlimited” really covers
- No per-disc charge, subscription or output watermark for the workflows described.
- No artificial number-of-rips limit for accessible sources.
- Possible limits from MakeMKV’s beta-key cycle, operating-system support, optical-drive speed, disc condition and available storage.
- Legal limits that depend on country, authorization and whether copy protection is bypassed.
For most documentary collections, start with HandBrake for unprotected or home-authored discs. Use MakeMKV when you need a straightforward title extraction, then add HandBrake when smaller files or wider device compatibility matter.
