Yes—but “IP-safe” is shorthand, not a blanket legal guarantee. Adobe has built commercially focused Firefly foundation models and is now offering Firefly Foundry, an enterprise service for tuning private models on a studio’s authorized brand and franchise assets. The strategy could give entertainment companies more consistent, governable generative workflows, but it does not by itself clear likeness, labor, trademark, copyright, security, or consent risks.
What Adobe is actually building
Adobe’s strategy has two layers. First, it continues to develop Firefly foundation models, which Adobe says are trained on licensed content and public-domain material. Second, Firefly Foundry lets an enterprise work with Adobe to train or deeply tune private models on its own proprietary brand or franchise assets.
That means Adobe is doing more than repackaging a single image generator. The program combines foundation-model development, customer-specific tuning, workflow integration, governance and access controls. Adobe and NVIDIA announced a March 16, 2026 partnership covering next-generation Firefly models, advanced computing and Foundry integrations: Adobe’s announcement.
What “IP-safe” means—and what it does not
Adobe uses several different descriptions: “commercially safe” for its Firefly models, “IP-friendly” for its rights-conscious approach and “IP-protected” in Foundry positioning. “IP-safe” is useful editorial shorthand, but it should not be treated as a universal contractual or legal status.

Adobe says its foundation Firefly models use licensed and public-domain material and are not trained on customer content. Its explanation of the Firefly Video Model is available at Adobe’s February 2025 announcement. Those safeguards describe training data and product policies; they do not guarantee that every output is copyrightable, original or free of every claim.
- They do not automatically clear trademarks, publicity rights, voice or likeness rights, moral rights, privacy, defamation or contractual restrictions.
- They do not authorize a customer to upload material it merely possesses but does not have the right to use for AI training.
- They do not settle guild, collective-bargaining, residual, credit or digital-replica obligations.
- They do not guarantee copyright registration or sufficient human authorship.
How Firefly Foundry works
Foundry is presented as a negotiated enterprise engagement rather than a self-serve subscription. Adobe describes a process involving assessment, model training or tuning, testing and validation, integration, deployment and ongoing access management. Multimodal franchise knowledge
Adobe says Foundry can use images, video, audio, vectors and 3D assets. A model may therefore be configured around approved character designs, costumes, props, locations, production references, logos, visual bibles and other story-world rules—not merely a text prompt for a generic look.

Controlled enterprise access
Adobe describes centralized model development, deployment and access management, with integration across Creative Cloud, Firefly, Express and GenStudio. The public material establishes private data and controlled access more clearly than it establishes an on-premises deployment. “Private” should therefore be confirmed in the contract as to hosting, isolation, retention and administrator controls.

Ownership and exclusivity claims
Adobe’s Foundry page says customers retain intellectual-property ownership of their data, content and outputs and receive exclusive usage rights dedicated to their enterprise environment. Buyers should still review the governing agreement for licenses, indemnities, exclusions, publicity rights, residuals, deletion and reuse terms.

Final shots, synthetic actor performances, voice replacement, canon-defining material, customer-facing advertising and work involving minors or real people require substantially tighter legal and creative review.

Foundry has no public list price in the cited product material; Adobe directs enterprises to request information. Pricing may depend on assessment, training, usage, integration, storage, retraining and deployment requirements.

“Firefly” no longer means only Adobe-trained models. Adobe has added third-party models so users can choose different systems inside Adobe workflows. Adobe says uploaded and generated content is not used to train generative AI models under its agreements and that Content Credentials can indicate whether an asset came from a Firefly or non-Adobe model. But Adobe’s legal documentation says capabilities powered by non-Adobe-trained models are excluded from standard Firefly IP indemnification. Certain eligible partner features may receive supplemental coverage under separate terms for specified licenses from May 8, 2026. The controlling documentation is Adobe’s partner-model terms.
For a rights-sensitive production, the buyer should record the model that generated each asset, confirm the applicable indemnity and decide whether administrators can disable partner models. An asset generated inside an Adobe interface is not automatically covered as though it came from an Adobe Firefly model.
What Adobe can and cannot promise

Rights problems Foundry cannot cure
Defective source rights
A file in a studio library may still be unusable for AI training. Examples include stock with AI restrictions, actor images limited by publicity contracts, footage licensed only for one production, freelancer-created concept art, music with separate rights, third-party trademarks and archival material with an incomplete chain of title.

Likeness and synthetic performance
A rights-cleared franchise dataset does not authorize a prompt for a celebrity’s face, voice or mannerisms. Studios need separate rules for actors, presenters, extras, minors, voice talent and digital replicas.
Labor and consent
Authorized franchise data can coexist with unresolved questions about consent, compensation, replacement, credit, residuals and union restrictions. Training-data licensing is only one part of the entertainment industry’s AI debate.
Production quality
Commercial usability is not the same as legal safety. Evaluation should cover temporal consistency, anatomy, logos, costume details, character age, geography, lighting, camera continuity, resolution, alpha channels, editability and voice performance.
What entertainment buyers should ask Adobe
- Rights: Which exact assets may be supplied, and can the studio prove the right to use each one for model training?
- Isolation: Can data and models be segregated by franchise, production, territory or business unit? Are source files retained, deleted or reused?
- Governance: Can administrators disable partner models, approve models by department, pin versions and audit updates?
- Coverage: What indemnity applies to Adobe outputs, partner-model outputs and customer-supplied material? What exclusions apply to trademark, publicity, voice and likeness claims?
- Provenance: Which model generated an asset, and do Content Credentials survive export, transcoding, screenshots and downstream editing?
- Integration: Can the system connect to asset management, review, editorial, VFX, color and localization pipelines and produce approved formats and resolutions?
- Commercial terms: Are charges based on seats, credits, training, inference, storage, APIs, retraining or integration? What service levels and throughput are committed?
Adobe’s entertainment relationships
On January 22, 2026, Adobe announced Firefly Foundry relationships involving Creative Artists Agency, United Talent Agency, William Morris Endeavor, B5 Studios, Promise Advanced Imagination, Cantina Creative and directors David Ayer and Jaume Collet-Serra. These are announced partners or participants, not evidence that the entire Hollywood industry has adopted Foundry. Details are in Adobe’s entertainment announcement.

- February 12, 2025: Adobe launched the Firefly Video Model in beta and described it as commercially safe and IP-friendly.

Bottom line for studios
Adobe is genuinely moving toward customer-specific AI for entertainment. Firefly Foundry’s significance is its combination of authorized franchise data, private model access, multimodal generation, enterprise governance and Adobe workflow integration. It is a stronger proposition than a generic public model for organizations that can document their rights and need consistent outputs.
It is not a universal “IP-safe” switch. Buyers must separate Adobe models from partner models, negotiate the actual indemnity and deployment terms, audit every training asset, preserve provenance and obtain consent for people and performances. Treat ordinary Firefly plans as experimentation and ideation tools; evaluate Custom Models for narrower consistency needs; and reserve Foundry for a rights-cleared, governed enterprise program.
