On most accounts, double-tapping a message sends the usual quick heart. The labels and icons can vary between iPhone, Android, Instagram.com and different account versions.
How to react to an Instagram message on iPhone or Android
- Open Instagram and tap the Messages or DM icon.
- Open the conversation.
- Press and hold the message you want to acknowledge.
- Tap one of the emoji reactions shown above or below the message.
This works for the standard mobile messaging interface on both iPhone and Android. Instagram may show a Messenger-style chat icon or an older paper-airplane design, so follow the current Messages label rather than relying on one fixed icon. Use the double-tap shortcut
Double-tap a message to send the usual default heart reaction. Treat this as a quick shortcut, not a guarantee: Instagram can change the default or the placement of controls in a later app build. If you tap twice accidentally, reopen the reaction control and change or remove it.
How to choose a different emoji reaction
- Press and hold the message.
- Tap the plus (+) button or expanded-emoji control, if it appears.
- Choose an emoji from the larger picker, or search for one when search is available.
- Tap the emoji to attach it to the existing message.
The first row is usually a short selection of suggested emojis. The expanded picker may expose more choices, but Instagram does not present exactly the same picker on every device, account or app version. How to react on Instagram.com
- Open Instagram in a browser and select Messages.
- Open the conversation.
- Move the pointer over the message.
- Select the reaction or smiley control that appears.
- Choose an emoji.
Desktop reactions are hover-based rather than touch-based. The web interface may offer a different row or fewer controls than the mobile app, and browser or account rollouts can change the exact appearance. Android Authority documents the desktop pattern.
How to change or remove a reaction
Replace it with another emoji
Press and hold the message again on mobile, or reopen its reaction control on desktop, then choose a different emoji. Selecting another reaction normally replaces the one already attached.
Undo the reaction
Open the same reaction control and tap the active emoji again. Some builds instead show an Unreact or remove option. Use whichever control is visible in your menu; the exact removal gesture varies by app build. Meta’s developer material represents these as separate react and unreact message events: Instagram reaction events.

Removing a reaction does not guarantee that a notification already delivered to the other person disappears. If you are checking whether an accidental heart is gone, reopen the conversation and look beneath the message before sending anything else.
Reacting versus replying

Can you react to photos, videos, voice messages and group-chat messages?
Instagram can display reaction controls for many kinds of DM content, including text, photos, videos, shared posts or Reels, GIFs and group-chat messages. However, the available controls can differ for media, voice messages, disappearing photos or videos, shared content and professional-account conversations. Press and hold the message itself and use the controls that appear rather than assuming every message type supports the same picker.

In a group chat, a reaction can acknowledge a message without adding another line to a busy thread. Participants may not see every reaction identically if their accounts, app versions or the message format differ.
Will someone be notified when you react?
A reaction is visible in the conversation and may generate a notification such as a reaction to a message. Whether a notification is delivered depends on the recipient’s notification settings and Instagram’s current behavior. A reaction can therefore be noticed even though you did not send a new text. Meta’s message-event documentation confirms that reactions and removals are represented as events, but it does not define every consumer notification scenario: Meta developer documentation.

- Confirm that you are in an Instagram DM conversation, not viewing a Story, post or Reel. Story emoji responses are separate replies to the Story.
- Press and hold directly on the message bubble, not on empty space around it.
- Update Instagram through the iPhone App Store or Google Play.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Try another conversation. This helps show whether the problem is limited to one chat or message type.
- Try Instagram.com. If the web control works, the issue may be app-specific.
- On Android, clear Instagram’s cache if your device provides that setting. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Use Instagram’s in-app help or problem-reporting tools if the control remains missing.
A missing reaction row can reflect an outdated app, a temporary bug, an account-level rollout, a platform difference or an unsupported message format. Android Authority’s troubleshooting guide also recommends testing the web version and clearing cache on Android.

Which reaction should you use?
- ❤️ — acknowledgment, affection, agreement or appreciation.
- 😂 — you found the message funny.
- 👍 — agreement or confirmation.
- 😮 — surprise.
- 😢 — sympathy or sadness.
- 🔥 — enthusiasm, praise or attraction.
- 🙏 — thanks, support or a request, depending on context.
Emoji meanings depend on the relationship and conversation. A reaction is useful for a quick acknowledgment, but it may be too ambiguous for an important question, instruction or sensitive topic.
Frequently asked questions
Can I react to my own Instagram message?
The reaction control may be available on your own messages in some conversations, but support can vary by message type, account and app version. Press and hold your sent message to see whether a reaction menu appears.
Can I use any emoji?
No universal list is guaranteed. The expanded picker may offer many more emojis than the suggested row, but availability and search behavior vary across interfaces.

Can I react from Instagram.com?
Often, yes: open Messages, hover over the message and choose the reaction control. The web picker may differ from the mobile app.
Can I remove a reaction?
Usually, reopen the reaction menu and tap the active reaction again, or choose an available remove or unreact control.
Does removing a reaction notify the other person?
Instagram does not provide a universal consumer-facing guarantee that an earlier notification is withdrawn. Assume a notification that was already delivered may remain noticed.
Why do I only see a heart?
You may be using the double-tap shortcut, or the quick reaction row may be collapsed. Press and hold the message and look for a plus or expanded-emoji control.
