First test whether other apps or devices are affected so you do not treat a billing or network problem as an Apple TV fault.
First, isolate the problem

Try HBO Max on a phone, computer, or another supported TV with the same account, and play another service on the Apple TV. If HBO Max fails everywhere, investigate the service, account, or subscription. If other Apple TV apps also fail, investigate the network or Apple TV. HBO Max recommends testing another supported device when diagnosing Apple TV problems (HBO Max troubleshooting guidance).
Run these fixes in order
1. Force-quit HBO Max
- Press the Apple TV remote’s TV button twice quickly.
- Swipe left or right to highlight HBO Max.
- Swipe up to close it.
- Reopen HBO Max and try the same title again.
This clears a stuck app process without changing your settings.
2. Restart Apple TV
Go to Settings → System → Restart, then open HBO Max again. If Apple TV is completely frozen, unplug it from power, wait briefly, reconnect it, and let it start up. Treat unplugging as a recovery measure, not the first response to every error.

3. Update HBO Max
- Open the App Store on Apple TV.
- Search for HBO Max (the current U.S. listing is “HBO Max: Stream Movies & TV”).
- Select Update if shown. If the button says Open, no newer version is currently offered to that device.

4. Update tvOS
- Open Settings → System → Software Updates.
- Select Update Software.
- Choose Download and Install when an update is available.
Apple also lets you enable Settings → System → Software Updates → Automatically Update. Keep Apple TV connected to power during the update. Apple’s instructions are at support.apple.com/en-us/108414.
5. Check compatibility before going further
The current U.S. App Store listing says HBO Max requires tvOS 16.4 or later on Apple TV. Check Settings → General → About for the model and tvOS version. Hardware that cannot reach a compatible tvOS version may not be able to run the current app; requirements can vary by country and release. See the listing at Apple’s App Store.
6. Sign out, restart, and sign in again
- Open HBO Max and select the Settings gear.
- Choose Sign Out.
- Restart Apple TV through Settings → System → Restart.
- Open HBO Max and sign in again.
This often helps when profiles, authentication, or account loading is stuck.

7. Restart your modem and router
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and wait for internet access.
- Reconnect the router, then restart Apple TV.
Check power, Ethernet, and coaxial cables. Apple lists ISP outages, weak Wi-Fi, DNS settings, blocked peer-to-peer traffic, and double NAT among possible causes of a “No Internet” condition (Apple network guidance).
8. Test speed and reduce competing traffic
HBO Max states that HD streaming needs at least 5 Mbps and recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K (HBO Max buffering guidance). These figures are not guarantees: Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, router quality, title delivery, and other household traffic still matter. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video calls, game updates, and other streams. A test on a phone may not represent the Apple TV’s signal.
9. Try Ethernet
If your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and test again. A wired connection can be more consistent than weak Wi-Fi, but it will not fix a login, entitlement, outage, or app-installation problem.
10. Delete and reinstall HBO Max
- On the Home Screen, highlight HBO Max.
- Press and hold the remote’s clickpad or touch surface.
- Select Delete App, then confirm Delete.
- Open the App Store, search for HBO Max, and choose Get, Install, or the download icon.
- Open the app and sign in.
Apple says deletion removes the app’s local data; it is more thorough than simply offloading it. See Apple’s app-management instructions. HBO Max specifically recommends reinstalling when the problem occurs only on Apple TV.

Fix the symptom you actually have
The app will not open or keeps crashing
Force-quit it, restart Apple TV, update HBO Max and tvOS, then reinstall. Check another app to see whether the failure is system-wide, and check available storage. Apple TV does not provide the generic Android-style “clear cache” menu often suggested in unrelated guides.
Buffering, pauses, or low quality
Use the network restart, speed, competing-traffic, and Ethernet tests above. Compare another HBO Max title and another service. A high speed-test result alone does not prove that the Apple TV connection is stable.
Black screen or playback will not start
Try another title and another app, and note whether audio continues. Restart and reinstall first. If only 4K or HDR titles fail, check the Apple TV, television, receiver, HDMI path, plan, and network as a specialized possibility; do not assume a specific HDMI, HDCP, Dolby Vision, or HDR setting is the cause without evidence.
Login loop or TV code rejected
- Try email-and-password sign-in instead of the TV code.
- Use the QR-code method if it appears.
- Open the sign-in page in a private/incognito browser window or another supported browser.
- Reinstall the TV app if authentication remains stuck.
HBO Max describes these alternatives at its sign-in guidance. Never give your password or six-digit code to someone claiming to provide support.

Subscription is not recognized
If Apple is the billing provider, open HBO Max, choose Sign In → Use Email Address → Restore Purchase. This applies only to an Apple App Store subscription that Apple can verify. Cable, mobile, internet, Amazon, Roku, Google, and other partner subscriptions must be authorized by that provider. Check who bills you before canceling or buying another plan; a second subscription can create duplicate charges. An Apple TV subscription itself does not include third-party services such as HBO Max (Apple TV).
An error code appears
Write down the exact wording and code, when it appears (launch, sign-in, or playback), whether all titles fail, and whether another device works. Also record the Apple TV model, tvOS version, HBO Max app version, internet provider, and billing provider. HBO Max advises retaining the on-screen code when contacting support (error-code guidance).
Audio is missing or distorted
Force-quit and restart HBO Max, test another title and another app, and determine whether the issue affects TV speakers, a soundbar, or an AV receiver. Temporarily test a simpler audio-output arrangement. The available Apple TV guidance does not establish one universal Dolby or HDMI setting as the fix.

Contact HBO Max
- HBO Max fails on several devices.
- Authentication remains impossible.
- A persistent HBO Max error code appears.
- Reinstalling fails while other Apple TV apps work.
Contact the subscription provider
Do this for cable, wireless, internet, or other bundled access when billing or entitlement is missing.

Contact Apple
Contact Apple when Apple TV cannot update, multiple apps fail, the device cannot connect to any network, it freezes outside HBO Max, or the hardware or remote is malfunctioning.
Contact your ISP or network administrator
Escalate when several devices have poor or absent internet, the connection repeatedly drops, or DNS, NAT, guest-network, or parental-control restrictions are involved. Do not label the problem an HBO Max outage without a current official status message or announcement.
What to have ready for support
- Exact error text and number
- Apple TV model and tvOS version
- HBO Max app version
- Whether another title, app, or device works
- Internet provider and measured connection
- Billing provider and account email
- Steps already attempted and their results
The Bottom Line
For most Apple TV-only HBO Max failures, force-quit the app, restart Apple TV, update both app and tvOS, sign out and back in, then reinstall. Use network, billing, and provider-specific troubleshooting when the same symptom follows you to other devices.
