Netflix’s Profile Lock adds a separate four-digit PIN to an individual profile. It can keep other household users from opening that profile, viewing its recommendations and history, or playing downloads made there. It is a privacy barrier—not a replacement for your Netflix account password.
For the most reliable setup, use a web browser: Account → Profiles → select a profile → Profile Lock → Create a Profile Lock → enter four digits → Save PIN. Then refresh your devices and secure any other profiles that also need privacy.
What Netflix Profile Lock protects
A locked profile can separate one person’s Netflix experience from everyone else using the account. Netflix keeps recommendations, viewing activity, Continue Watching, My List, ratings, playback settings, language preferences and maturity controls at the profile level (Netflix profile details).
- Personalized recommendations and viewing history
- Continue Watching, My List and ratings
- Profile-specific language and playback settings
- Titles downloaded through that profile
- An adult profile from casual access by children or other household members
Netflix requires a four-digit PIN for a locked profile on supported devices. Keep the PIN separate from the account password and device unlock code.

- Choose Create a Profile Lock.

Menu wording can vary by country, account configuration and Netflix interface revision. If the option is difficult to find on a television, use this browser route instead (Netflix Profile Lock instructions).
How to lock a profile in the Netflix mobile app
- Open the Netflix app and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile.
- Tap Profile Lock.
- Create, edit or remove the PIN as prompted.
Android, iPhone and iPad navigation labels can differ between app versions. Netflix may require account-password verification. If the account has no password, Netflix directs users to the browser process.
Stop people bypassing the lock by creating a new profile
Locking a child profile is incomplete if someone can freely create an unrestricted profile. Netflix provides a main-profile setting called Require PIN to add new profiles (Netflix’s new-profile PIN guidance).

Recover a forgotten PIN
At the PIN prompt, select Forgot PIN? and follow the account-verification steps. You can also manage Profile Lock from the Account page (Netflix PIN recovery and management).
Profile Lock versus parental controls
| Feature | Main purpose | What it restricts |
|---|---|---|
| Profile Lock PIN | Profile privacy | Opening a selected profile and accessing its downloads |
| Maturity-rating controls | Age-appropriate viewing | Titles above the selected maturity level |
| Title restrictions | Block specific programs | Individual shows or movies on a profile |
| Require PIN to add new profiles | Close an easy workaround | Creating new profiles from the main profile |
| Account password | Account-level security | Sign-in and major account-management access |
For children, use a Kids or child profile with the appropriate maturity rating and title restrictions, then lock profiles and require a PIN for new profiles. Netflix has moved from an older single account-level PIN model to profile-level controls; its documentation says that change cannot be reversed to the former single-PIN arrangement (Netflix parental-control guidance).
What Profile Lock does not secure
- It does not replace the Netflix account password.
- Anyone who knows the account password may be able to change parental controls and Profile Lock settings (Netflix device and password limitations).
- It does not protect payment details, the email address, plan settings or other account-level controls.
- It does not lock another profile unless you secure that profile separately.
- It does not stop new-profile creation unless the main profile has the PIN-required setting enabled.
- It may not force a PIN before profile entry on every older device.
If an unauthorized person knows the account password, change that password and sign out devices that should no longer have access. A separate Netflix account is the clearest alternative when people should not share account-level access.

Why Netflix may not ask for a PIN
Older devices
Some older televisions and streaming devices cannot be updated to request a PIN before entering a locked profile. Netflix says the PIN may still be required when someone tries to watch a title in that profile.
Browser behavior
Some browsers automatically reopen the last profile used after sign-in. Clearing the browser’s Netflix cookies can stop that automatic reopening.
Another profile or a new profile
A user may be opening an unlocked profile, or creating a new one if the main-profile restriction is disabled. Lock every profile that needs privacy and enable Require PIN to add new profiles.

Refresh steps after changing Profile Lock
A device may need to refresh before a new setting appears. Follow this order:
- Confirm the PIN is saved on the Account page.
- Leave and reopen the profile-selection screen.
- Switch to another profile, then switch back.
- Sign out of Netflix and sign in again.
- Update the Netflix app and device software where possible.
- Test the profile in a current web browser.
- If only one older device fails, treat it as a compatibility limitation and contact Netflix Help Center support.
Understanding Netflix lock icons
A lock icon beside a profile indicates that Profile Lock is enabled and a four-digit PIN is required (Netflix lock-icon explanations). A lock icon beside a movie or show can mean something different: on an ad-supported plan, it may indicate that the title is unavailable because of licensing restrictions. That title icon is not necessarily a security lock.
Account and plan limitations
- A standard Netflix account can have up to five profiles.
- Profiles are unavailable on devices made before 2013.
- Extra-member accounts have one profile and cannot create additional profiles.
- Netflix says extra-member accounts cannot use Profile Lock.
- Some features are unavailable on Netflix Kids profiles.
Availability can depend on account type, country and device (Netflix profile limits; Netflix Profile Lock limitations).
