Google TV expanded its built-in Freeplay lineup on December 21, 2024, adding six clearly holiday-focused channels and bringing the reported U.S. total to 171 free, ad-supported channels. The update was a seasonal expansion—not an August 2026 rollout—and the holiday channels were never guaranteed to remain in the guide.
Which holiday channels were added?
The six holiday-specific additions came from Xumo and Stingray. Xumo supplied movie and themed programming channels; Stingray supplied music channels.

The six channels were part of a larger Freeplay refresh. The same December 2024 update also listed Designated Survivor, The Great Christmas Light Fight, Best of Dr. Phil, Continuum, Z Nation, The Design Network, FilmRise: Classic TV, UFC, Unbeaten, Big 12 Studios, Waypoint TV and PursuitUP. Those were general-interest additions, not six additional holiday channels. The 171-channel figure included the entire reported Freeplay catalog.

What “free” means on Google TV
Freeplay channels do not require a traditional cable subscription or a monthly payment for the built-in channel service. They are, however, ad-supported. “Free” does not mean commercial-free, tracking-free or unrestricted.
Freeplay is primarily a live, scheduled television experience. A movie channel may be showing a particular film at a scheduled time rather than offering every title as an on-demand stream that starts whenever you choose. That makes the service useful for browsing, background viewing and continuous holiday music, but less reliable if you need one specific Christmas movie immediately.
Google’s support documentation explains that the Live experience includes a channel guide and a Recents section, and that parents can enable content restrictions for Freeplay channels: Google TV Help.

How to find Freeplay channels
On an eligible U.S. Google TV device, the usual route is:
- Turn on the television or Google TV Streamer.
- Open the Live tab or the live-TV guide.
- Find the Freeplay or free built-in channels section.
- Browse categories, select a channel and start watching.
- Use the guide or Recents to return to channels you watched earlier.
Labels and placement can differ by television manufacturer, country setting, software version and rollout. If Freeplay is not visible, check that the device is eligible, connected to the internet and running current software, then look inside the Live guide rather than assuming a separate Freeplay app must be installed.
Freeplay is not the same as every free channel in the Live tab
Google TV can combine its own Freeplay channels with channels supplied through partner apps such as Pluto TV, Plex, Haystack News and Tubi. Google’s overview of the broader Live experience is available at Google’s free-channel announcement.

That distinction explains why published counts can look dramatically different. Built-in Freeplay is Google TV’s integrated, ad-supported catalog. Partner channels may require an app download, an account, a separate service’s terms or regional availability. Paid live-TV services, including YouTube TV, Sling and Philo, are a separate category and are not needed to watch the built-in Freeplay lineup.
Where the channels were available

Compatible hardware generally includes televisions with Google TV built in, the Google TV Streamer and other eligible Google TV devices. Availability should not be generalized to every Android TV product or every country. The exact model, software build and country settings matter.

Are the 2024 holiday channels still available?
There is no reliable basis for calling all six channels permanent parts of the 2026 lineup. The Stingray channels were specifically described as temporary holiday updates, and the Xumo channels also appeared seasonal. Holiday FAST channels commonly disappear, rotate to different names or return only during a later holiday period.
Check the current Freeplay guide on your own eligible U.S. device for a definitive answer. A channel can disappear because the seasonal window ended, licensing changed, the catalog was refreshed or the channel is not offered in your region. A listing that appears in the Live guide but will not play may belong to a partner app that still needs to be installed or signed into.

Google announced the 150-channel milestone and an updated guide in September 2024 at Google TV’s home, AI and sports update. A December 2025 report put Freeplay at 252 channels and described later additions from NBCUniversal, local-news providers and other entertainment brands: 9to5Google’s 252-channel report.
Google’s December 2025 holiday programming was also different from the 2024 expansion. It promoted channels such as SNL Vault, The Real Housewives Vault and American Ninja Warrior, along with a separate 25-day Advent Calendar of daily holiday movies and shows. What the holiday expansion is good for—and what it is not
- Useful for: casual holiday browsing, continuous seasonal music, background viewing and cord-cutters who want a cable-like guide without a TV subscription.
- Limited by: advertising, scheduled programming, licensing changes, regional restrictions and a catalog that can change without notice.
- Not a replacement for: an on-demand service when you need a particular movie or episode at a specific time.
If you already own a recent Google TV television, no additional hardware is necessary for built-in Freeplay. Owners of older or non-smart televisions can compare a Google TV Streamer with Roku or Fire TV devices, while buyers of a new set can evaluate Google TV models from brands such as TCL, Hisense and Sony on picture quality, software support, price and warranty—not simply on channel count. Official starting points include Google Store, TCL, Hisense USA and Sony televisions.
The bottom line
Google TV’s December 2024 update added six seasonal Xumo and Stingray channels and brought the reported U.S. Freeplay total to 171. It made Google TV a more useful free holiday-TV option, but the channels were ad-supported, largely linear and potentially temporary. Treat the 2024 list as a historical snapshot, and use the current Live/Freeplay guide to see what is actually available on your device today.
