Discs, tapes and cartridges were expensive to manufacture, ship, store and replace; they required specialized hardware and often imposed technical restrictions. Streaming and downloads removed much of that friction.
But convenience is not the same as ownership or preservation. A service can remove a film, change a soundtrack or require an account that no longer works. The defensible verdict is therefore narrower: physical media deserved to die as infrastructure, not as a guarantee that a particular work remains available.
What counts as physical media?
The category includes very different technologies: vinyl, cassettes, CDs, VHS, DVDs, Blu-rays, printed books, game discs and cartridges, software installers, USB media, hard drives and archival tape. They do not share one technical purpose. A VHS tape’s weaknesses are not the same as a Blu-ray’s, and a collectible record is not equivalent to a backup cartridge.
Nor does physical possession automatically mean permanent access. Playback may still depend on a compatible player, firmware, region support, decryption keys, licensing systems, an operating system or a working display. Conversely, a local digital file can remain usable without a subscription if the owner can preserve its hardware and format.

The case against physical media as everyday infrastructure
Manufacturing was built into every copy
A physical release requires factories, packaging, warehousing, shipping, retail space, returns and management of unsold stock. Digital delivery largely removes those per-copy logistics. A connected catalog can serve millions of people without manufacturing and shipping an individual object to each one. The transition from shops and shelves to online catalogs is documented in the original argument at Hackaday.
Collections consume space and attention
Shelves and cabinets need room. Items need cataloging, dust control and protection from heat, moisture, scratches and loss. Finding one title can mean searching a room or a store inventory. Digital libraries replace those physical burdens with account, file-format and backup risks, but search, metadata and instant sampling are genuinely better for routine use.
Portability favored connected devices
An account can follow a user across a phone, tablet, computer, television, car, console or speaker. Carrying a disc also means carrying a player, or ripping and transcoding the content first. For casual listeners and viewers, that friction became irrational once broadband and capable devices were widespread.

Each format solved a problem, then acquired new ones
| Format | What it improved | Why it stopped being the best default |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | Mass-market recorded sound and durable artwork | Mechanical wear, dust, surface noise, large size and limited playing time |
| Cassette | Portable, recordable music | Hiss, wow and flutter, stretching, capstan failures, tangles and generation loss |
| VHS | Affordable home video | Low resolution, color artifacts, rewinding, tape wear, mechanical failure and poor random access |
| CD | Digital audio, random access and compact packaging | Scratches, occasional disc rot, limited capacity, optical-drive dependence and declining hardware support |
| DVD | Much better video than VHS, chapters, subtitles and multiple audio tracks | Region codes, CSS encryption, unskippable warnings, damage and limited capacity for modern video |
| Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray | High-bitrate video, advanced audio and substantial extras | Encryption, firmware and player costs, market restrictions and shrinking mainstream availability |
These were not pointless technologies. They were successive improvements. Their failure was becoming a permanent distribution obligation after cheaper, more flexible delivery methods appeared.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy streaming won
It reduced the time from desire to playback
- Search for a title.
- Press play.
- Resume on another device.
- Avoid shipping, shelves, rewinding and damaged media.
That sequence is difficult for a disc collection to match. Digital catalogs also provide recommendations, playlists, subtitles, alternate audio and instant previews. A subscription may be cheaper than buying individual titles for a high-volume user, but it is not automatically cheaper: the comparison changes with country, household size, price increases, broadband costs and the number of services required.
Software and data followed a different path
Downloads replaced most installation discs because software changes, patches and security updates cannot wait for a factory pressing. Flash storage and network transfer also beat optical discs for routine data movement. Yet removable media, external drives and tape remain useful for offline transfer and backup; their value is resilience, not convenience.

The hidden price of convenience
Access became conditional
Streaming commonly requires an account, an active subscription, internet access, compatible software and platform authorization. Catalogs are fragmented among competing services and can change by country. A title may move, disappear or never receive a legal release in a particular market.
Digital versions can change
A platform can replace a soundtrack, alter an edit, change subtitles or modify an aspect ratio. None of this means the underlying work has been destroyed, but it can remove the version a viewer wanted. A disc already in a person’s possession is less exposed to a platform’s next licensing decision, although discs can go out of print and fail.
Quality is not a universal digital victory
Streaming quality depends on service encoding, subscription tier, bandwidth, congestion and playback equipment. A well-encoded stream can outperform a poorly authored disc; a 4K disc can provide a higher, steadier bitrate and original extras than a compressed stream. The result must be judged release by release, not by the word “digital.”

Why physical formats still sell
Physical media did not vanish; its job changed. RIAA’s US 2025 year-end figures, released March 16, 2026, show streaming at $9.4745 billion, about 82% of recorded-music revenue, with 106.5 million paid subscription accounts. Vinyl still generated $1.0429 billion from 46.8 million units, while CDs generated $312.4 million from 29.5 million units; total physical music revenue reached $1.381 billion, up 5.0% year over year. See the RIAA report and its detailed figures.
Those numbers describe coexistence, not a technological victory for vinyl. Records increasingly function as artwork, ritual, fan support, social objects and limited collectibles. Cassettes and deluxe Blu-rays occupy similar niches. A buyer may be purchasing identity, experience or a preservation guarantee rather than the most efficient way to hear or watch something.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Physical copies and the preservation problem
Ownership is a spectrum: a temporary stream, account-based access, a restricted download, a local unrestricted file, a physical copy, and multiple verified archival copies are not equivalent. Buying a disc normally gives possession of that particular copy; it does not automatically grant unrestricted rights to reproduce or redistribute the work. Digital purchases can provide durable practical access, but they commonly remain tied to vendor authorization and terms.

Physical editions matter most for rare films, boutique restorations, commentary-heavy releases, titles with uncertain streaming availability, unreliable internet, travel without connectivity, libraries, archives and high-quality home cinema. They can preserve original mixes, deleted scenes, subtitles, artwork and historical packaging. They are not archival magic: discs become unreadable, players disappear and formats need migration. Preservation still requires redundancy, controlled storage, documentation and working hardware.
A practical access model
| If you value… | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Immediate access, discovery, multiple devices and minimal storage | Streaming |
| A specific edition, offline playback, extras or high-bitrate presentation | Physical purchase |
| Large lawful local collections and control over playback | Local library or media server |
| Convenience plus durable access to essentials | Hybrid model |
- Stream ordinary, replaceable or exploratory content.
- Buy physical editions of irreplaceable favorites, rare works and versions with worthwhile extras.
- Keep an affordable compatible player and the cables or drives it needs.
- Back up important local files separately; a NAS alone is not a backup.
- Treat discs as one preservation layer, not the entire preservation plan.
The verdict
Physical media deserved to die as the default logistics of entertainment and software. It was costly, fragile, space-intensive and frequently less convenient than network delivery. Streaming solved those problems at extraordinary scale.
It did not solve ownership, catalog stability or preservation. The sensible endpoint is not a return to shelves for everything, nor blind trust in every subscription catalog. Use streaming for convenience and discovery; keep local or physical copies when continuity, quality, offline access or cultural memory matters.
