On July 24, 2025, Musk said, “We’re bringing back Vine, but in AI form.” On August 2, he called Grok Imagine “AI Vine” and said X had found Vine’s old video archive and was working to restore access. Those comments describe an AI video feature and a proposed archive recovery effort—not a confirmed new Vine app.
A separate service, diVine, launched in 2026 as a six-second, human-made video successor with roughly 500,000 classic Vine videos. It is associated with early Twitter employee Evan Henshaw-Plath and backed by Jack Dorsey, not Musk or X.
What Elon Musk actually announced
July 24, 2025: “Vine, but in AI form”
Musk’s first statement was future-oriented: “We’re bringing back Vine, but in AI form.” It did not announce a launch date, a Vine-branded app, a restored follower graph, or a functioning social network.
August 2, 2025: Grok Imagine and the archive
Musk then wrote that “Grok Imagine is AI Vine” and added that X had found the old Vine archive and was working to restore user access. The wording connected two projects:

- Grok Imagine as an AI interpretation of short Vine-like video.
- A possible effort to recover and expose old Vine material.
It did not establish how much of the archive survived, whether original metadata or accounts were intact, whether creators had approved republication, where the material would be hosted, or when public access would begin. TechCrunch described the archive plan as uncertain, while Social Media Today interpreted “AI Vine” as a description of Grok Imagine rather than a return of the original app. The Houston Chronicle reported the July statement.
What “AI Vine” means in practice
Grok Imagine is an AI image-to-video and text-to-video creation feature associated with Grok. Musk’s comparison is understandable because it produces short clips, but a generation tool is not the same thing as a social network.
| Original Vine | Grok Imagine |
|---|---|
| User-recorded six-second looping videos | AI-generated or AI-assisted clips from prompts or source images |
| Feeds, followers, comments and a creator community | Primarily a video-creation feature unless connected to a broader feed |
| Human performance and timing were central | Prompting and model output are central |
| Shared remix conventions and recognizable creators | Generated output that may imitate styles, scenes or motion |
In an official June 16, 2026 announcement, xAI described Grok Imagine Video 1.5. Its Fast version was specified as producing six-second, 720p videos in approximately 25 seconds, compared with more than 40 seconds for the previous model. That is a version- and date-specific product claim, not proof that Grok Imagine recreates Vine’s community or economics. See xAI’s announcement.
AI-assisted is not the same as fully synthetic
An editor that trims a person’s recording, adds effects or helps animate a real performance is materially different from a model generating the entire clip. Any future “AI Vine” product would need to make that distinction clear to users and viewers.

What happened to the original Vine?
Twitter acquired Vine in 2012. Twitter stopped allowing new uploads in 2016, and the service was fully shut down in 2017, according to the historical timeline reported by TechCrunch. Vine’s influence went beyond its six-second limit: looping behavior, tight creative constraints, remix culture, a distinctive creator community and shared references helped shape the short-video culture later expanded by TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
That is why a library of clips or an AI generator cannot automatically restore “Vine.” The original product also depended on network effects, discovery, moderation, creator relationships and a sense that people were participating in one shared culture.
Was the Vine archive restored?
Musk said X had found the archive and was working to restore access. No public specification in the available reporting confirms that the archive is complete, searchable or officially relaunched. Important unresolved questions include:
- How many videos were recovered and in what quality?
- Are original usernames, comments, likes and dates authentic and intact?
- Do creators control republication, correction or removal?
- Will X, Grok or another service host the material?
- Are all clips legally cleared for public display?
Do not confuse that claim with diVine’s separately reported archive. Coverage of diVine says it reconstructed or hosts approximately 500,000 classic Vine videos, with associated metadata in some cases. That work belongs to the diVine project, not to Musk or X. Meet diVine, the separate Vine-style revival
diVine is the more literal app-based successor. Public reporting in 2026 describes a web and mobile service with an archive of about 500,000 classic clips and support for new six-second uploads. Its stated identity is human-first: coverage says it rejects or bans generative-AI uploads and positions the service against “AI slop.”
The project is associated with Evan Henshaw-Plath, also known as Rabble, an early Twitter employee, and backed by Jack Dorsey’s nonprofit or experimental social-project organization. It is not Vine officially returning under Elon Musk.
“No AI” should be read as a policy and moderation goal, not a guarantee of perfect detection. Automated systems can miss synthetic clips or wrongly flag human work, and hybrid videos—real footage with AI effects—do not fit a simple yes-or-no category. Reporting has also said original creators can reclaim content or request removal; that is a service policy described by coverage, not a universal legal guarantee. See MediaPost and Product Hunt.
Musk’s concept and diVine compared
| Question | Musk/X/xAI | diVine |
|---|---|---|
| Main product | Grok Imagine, described by Musk as “AI Vine” | Six-second social-video app and archive |
| Content model | AI-generated or AI-assisted video | Human-made uploads under a stated anti-generative-AI policy |
| Archive | Musk said X found it and was restoring access; completeness and public availability were not established | About 500,000 classic clips reported by 2026 coverage |
| Operator and backing | Grok is an xAI product; archive work was described by Musk as an X effort | Project associated with Evan Henshaw-Plath and backed by Jack Dorsey |
| Confirmed social-app relaunch? | Not established by the available announcements | Reported as publicly launched in 2026 |
| Core pitch | AI-native short-video creation | Human-created short video and preservation of Vine culture |
Why the “Vine is back” headline spread
Vine is an efficient cultural reference: almost everyone understands “short, looping video.” Calling Grok Imagine “AI Vine” communicates that idea faster than a technical product description. It also connects a new xAI feature to a famous brand.

But the phrase creates a basic ambiguity. “Bringing back Vine” sounds like a social-network relaunch, while the concrete product Musk named was an AI creation tool. TechCrunch noted that the wording could also draw attention to Grok rather than signal a completed Vine revival.

Possible benefits
- Rapid experimentation with six-second loops.
- Animation, visual effects and surreal comedy without a camera setup.
- Prompt-driven sound, dialogue or motion.
- Lower production barriers for people who cannot film or edit conventionally.
- Potential integration with an AI assistant and an existing social platform.
Likely costs and risks
- Less emphasis on human performance, timing and personality.
- An abundance of cheap clips that makes discovery harder.
- Unclear attribution and originality when models imitate existing work.
- Risks involving likenesses, copyrighted characters, music and deceptive media.
- A prompt-output gallery replacing a participatory creator community.
A successful service would need rules for deepfakes, impersonation, sexual imagery, minors, copyright, defamation, political deception, voice and likeness rights, spam and automated accounts. Grok Imagine’s policies should not be assumed to match X’s, Vine’s historical rules or diVine’s human-content policy.

For human-made six-second social video
Use diVine for the reported archive and new six-second uploads, subject to its current app, web and geographic availability. It is a social platform, not an AI video generator.

For large-scale distribution
TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts offer established discovery systems and audiences, but they are not restorations of Vine’s original network. For more controlled AI production rather than a social feed, Runway and Adobe Firefly are different categories of tool.
Can either revival recreate Vine’s cultural impact?
That depends on more than clip length. A durable successor needs creator discovery, moderation that users trust, sustainable economics, a distinctive culture and enough network density for newcomers to find an audience. It also needs answers about whether archived creators receive control or revenue, whether AI generation is monetized, and how the service competes with TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Archive preservation raises a separate question: keeping a historical clip available is not the same as commercially exploiting it. Services need clear procedures for creator claims, takedowns, copyright complaints and corrections, especially when old usernames or metadata are displayed as if they were current.
The Bottom Line
Verdict: Elon Musk did not relaunch the original Vine app. He proposed an AI interpretation through Grok Imagine and said X was working to restore the old archive. The separate, live social revival is diVine, a Jack Dorsey-backed, human-first successor that treats AI-generated uploads as the problem rather than the product.
