There is no single legal 123movies replacement. For viewers in the United States, start with Tubi for free, ad-supported movies and television; use JustWatch to locate a particular title; add Kanopy or Hoopla through a participating library; and choose Pluto TV or Plex if you prefer live channels. That combination is safer and more reliable than an unlicensed mirror, even though it cannot deliver every new release in one place.
Why 123movies seemed so convenient
Services using the 123movies name became popular because they appeared to combine a huge catalog, rapid access to new releases, browser playback and no conventional monthly bill. That is exactly what frustrated cord-cutters want when paid catalogs are split among several apps.
The apparent convenience does not establish distribution rights. 123movies-branded domains and mirrors have commonly been associated with unauthorized copies. Illegal-streaming ecosystems also expose visitors to deceptive advertising, redirects, fake play buttons, phishing, malicious downloads, browser extensions and extensive tracking. A study of these services documents those risks at arXiv. A site that plays in a browser may still be unauthorized and unsafe.
Why no legitimate service duplicates it
Licensed streaming is divided by territory, release window, studio ownership, advertising rights, subscription tier and library or university agreements. A documentary may be free with ads on one service, available through a library on another, and rentable elsewhere. Apps, captions, audio tracks and parental controls can differ by title and device, and availability can change without notice.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
“Free” also has several meanings:
| Model | Typical cost | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ad-supported streaming | $0 | Commercial interruptions and rotating catalogs |
| Library streaming | Usually $0 to an eligible patron | Participating library, card and borrowing rules required |
| University streaming | Usually included for eligible users | Institutional login and licensing required |
| Official free YouTube titles | $0 for selected titles | Rights and catalog vary by title and country |
| Subscription | Monthly fee | Broader access, but catalogs still rotate |
| Rental or purchase | Per title | Often the quickest legal route to a new release |
Tubi describes its service as free and legal, funded by advertising rather than a subscription fee, and says a credit card is not required: Tubi’s help center. JustWatch separates free, ad-supported, subscription, rental and purchase offers in its service guide.

Tubi: the best default starting point
Tubi is the practical first stop for casual movie and TV browsing. It is ad-supported, available on the web and on major mobile, smart-TV, game-console and streaming-device platforms listed by Tubi, and does not require a credit card according to its help page. It is a strong fit for documentaries and general viewing when you can accept advertising.
- Choose it when: you want no-cost, on-demand viewing with minimal setup.
- Expect: ads, rotating rights and no guarantee that a current theatrical documentary is included.
- Do not assume: “free” means ad-free or account-free on every device.
Tubi itself contrasts its licensed service with sites that produce security warnings, pop-ups, redirects, malware or VPN demands; see its official explanation.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Pluto TV: best for channel surfing
Pluto TV is designed around linear channels and scheduled programming, with on-demand material also available. It suits viewers who would rather turn on a documentary channel than choose a title and start time. The trade-off is that a scheduled program may not be available when you want it, advertising remains part of the model, and the exact lineup depends on region and date. Verify the current listing on Pluto TV before promising a particular film or channel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Roku Channel: a mixed free catalog
The Roku Channel combines free, ad-supported movies, shows and channels with paid rentals, purchases and add-on subscriptions in supported markets. It can be used beyond Roku hardware where the service is offered. Check the label on each title so a rental or subscription is not mistaken for free viewing. Country, device and catalog availability are governed by Roku’s current legal documentation.
Kanopy: the strongest ad-free option for documentary viewers
Kanopy is often the best match for serious documentary, independent-film, foreign-cinema and classic-film viewing. Access is supported by participating public libraries and universities, normally using a library card or institutional login. The experience is ad-free, but some institutions impose monthly play limits and many libraries do not participate. It is curated rather than a complete commercial-release catalog; see an example of its library-backed offering at Kanopy.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Hoopla: library borrowing with offline options
Hoopla lets patrons of participating libraries borrow movies and television alongside ebooks, audiobooks, comics and music. Browser, mobile and television-platform support is available, and some titles can be downloaded for offline use subject to service and title restrictions. Your library sets borrowing limits and eligibility. Hoopla explains its library-funded, no-subscription model in its support article.
Plex: free video plus a personal media hub
Plex offers free, ad-supported movies and television and a live-TV component. Its personal-media-server tools are a separate feature for organizing media you own or are authorized to use. A Plex Pass or another paid feature does not unlock every commercial streaming catalog. Plex explains the distinction between its service and Netflix at this overview, with advertising details in its video-on-demand FAQ and legality guidance at its legal article.

Choose between free, cheap and newest
When zero dollars matters most
Use Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel or Plex, and check official free YouTube offerings. Expect ads, older or rotating titles, or a scheduled channel format.
When you want no ads
Check Kanopy and Hoopla first if your library or university participates. Their availability and borrowing rules replace advertising as the main constraint.
When you want the newest release tonight
It may not be legally free yet. JustWatch may show a rental, purchase or subscription option instead. A free platform cannot reliably match the release speed of unauthorized copies.

Safety checklist for streaming
- Use the provider’s official domain or official app-store listing.
- Never install a “special player,” codec, browser extension or APK just to watch a film.
- Do not enter card details on a page promising every new release free.
- Treat repeated redirects, fake download buttons, notification requests and antivirus warnings as stop signs.
- Use unique passwords, a password manager and current browser, operating-system and security updates.
- A VPN may protect privacy on some networks, but it does not authorize copyrighted streaming or bypass a provider’s regional terms.
The relevant question is licensing, not whether a site charges money. Licensed ad-supported services, library platforms, official broadcaster or studio channels and public-domain archives differ fundamentally from unlicensed aggregators and mirrors.
If you already visited a suspicious site
- Close the tab without clicking further pop-ups.
- Remove unfamiliar browser extensions and revoke notification permission for the domain.
- Delete unexpected downloads and run a reputable security scan.
- Change any password entered there, especially if reused elsewhere.
- Contact your card issuer if payment information was submitted and monitor financial and email accounts.
Clearing browser history alone does not remove malware. The risk profile of an unlicensed mirror is materially worse than that of an established licensed provider, but a visit does not prove that every device has been infected.
Important U.S. and device caveats
- This guide is optimized for the United States as of August 2026; catalogs and legality can differ elsewhere.
- Library and university services depend on the specific institution and its licensing.
- Apps, supported devices, subtitles, audio description, captions, age ratings and parental controls vary by title.
- Some services require an account even when they do not require payment.
- “Free on the service” generally means free with ads unless the provider or library says otherwise.
The practical setup
For most viewers, install or bookmark Tubi, keep JustWatch for title-level searches, and check Kanopy or Hoopla with your library card. Add Pluto TV when you miss channel surfing, or Plex when you also manage an authorized personal media collection. This small stack accepts the reality of fragmented rights without sending you to unstable mirrors.
