Google Podcasts stopped letting users listen in the United States on April 2, 2024. It was not a worldwide cutoff: Google’s support guidance placed the end of listening access in other regions on June 24, 2024. Google directed listeners to YouTube Music, while also providing an OPML export so subscriptions could be moved to another compatible podcast app.
Because the shutdown is complete, the practical question today is not whether the app will stop working, but what could be recovered and where those subscriptions belong now.
What actually shut down
The Google Podcasts app and its listening service were discontinued. That removed Google Podcasts as a destination for finding, subscribing to and playing shows; it did not delete the podcasts themselves. Publishers’ RSS feeds and episodes generally remained available through YouTube Music and other podcast platforms.
Google Podcasts subscriptions were listener data associated with the app. They should not be confused with Google Podcasts Manager, a separate creator-facing service. Contemporary Google support communications identified July 29, 2024 as the end of Podcasts Manager access, after listening access had ended.

The shutdown timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 2023 | Google announced that Google Podcasts would be discontinued and YouTube Music would become its podcast destination. |
| March 2024 | U.S. listeners could still use the app while Google promoted migration and subscription export. |
| April 2, 2024 | Listening access ended for users in the United States, as reported by Ars Technica. |
| June 24, 2024 | Google support guidance quoted in contemporary help-community discussions identified this as the end of listening access in all regions. The date should be treated as support guidance rather than a date stated in the original announcement. |
| July 29, 2024 | Contemporary support guidance identified this as the end of Google Podcasts Manager access, a separate creator deadline. |
Google’s original announcement said U.S. listening would continue through March 2024 and that migration and export tools would remain available for a limited period. See Google’s migration announcement for the original plan.
Google’s replacement: YouTube Music
Google positioned YouTube Music as its central podcast destination, citing Edison research that YouTube was used more frequently for podcast listening than Google Podcasts in the United States. The service could accept RSS feeds, including shows that were not already hosted in YouTube Music’s catalog.

Why YouTube Music made sense
- It was Google’s first-party migration route.
- It connected podcast listening with existing YouTube and YouTube Music accounts.
- Eligible podcasts could support audio/video switching, background playback and downloads. Feature availability depends on the content, account, country and current YouTube rules.
- YouTube Music Premium supports offline podcast downloads; see YouTube Music’s help page.
Where it differed from Google Podcasts
YouTube Music is a combined music, video and podcast service rather than a podcast-only reader. Its navigation, recommendations and library model therefore differ from Google Podcasts. A listener who wants a lightweight RSS library, strict separation from music recommendations or extensive podcast-management controls may prefer another app.
What could be transferred
Google offered two routes: move subscriptions into YouTube Music, or export an OPML file for import into another compatible podcast application.

- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Subscriptions moved to YouTube Music
- Open Google Podcasts while the migration tools are available.
- Select Export subscriptions.
- Choose Export to YouTube Music.
- Review the shows YouTube Music found and confirm the transfer.
- Open YouTube Music and check the podcast library, historically labeled Your podcasts or a similar library area.
Labels and screens varied by app version, country, account and date. Google said users needed up-to-date Google Search and Google Podcasts apps for the migration tools; web access was available where supported.
OPML export for another app
OPML is a standard interchange format for podcast subscriptions. It normally carries show or RSS-feed information, not a complete account backup.

- Save the file locally and make a second backup if possible.
- In the new podcast app, find its Import or OPML command and select the file.
- Review the imported list for missing, duplicate or incorrectly matched shows.
- Add any missing podcast manually with its RSS-feed URL.
A product-expert response in the Google Search Help Community also described using Google Takeout by deselecting other categories and selecting Podcasts: support.google.com.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What did not reliably move
An OPML file preserves subscriptions and feed information, but it should not be treated as a backup of the whole Google Podcasts account. User reports in Google’s help community described queue and listening-history data as not preserved: support.google.com.

- Listening history and played/unplayed status may be lost.
- Queue contents and order may be lost.
- Downloaded episodes do not transfer as files.
- Playback position, app preferences and other local state may require manual recreation.
- A show can be omitted if it is unavailable, incorrectly matched or not recognized by the migration tool.
Reports of missing subscriptions or failed YouTube Music matches were user experiences rather than a guarantee that every transfer failed. Google did not promise a seamless copy of all listening-state data.
If a show was missing after migration
- Confirm that the same Google account used by Google Podcasts is open in YouTube Music.
- Update Google Podcasts, Google Search and YouTube Music where those updates are still available.
- Try the web migration page instead of the mobile app, or vice versa.
- Export OPML independently rather than relying only on the YouTube Music transfer.
- Search for the show by title in the replacement app.
- Add the show using its RSS-feed URL. YouTube Music was designed to accept RSS feeds even when a podcast was not already in its catalog; details are in Google’s migration announcement.
- Check for alternate regional or language feeds, renamed programs and duplicate listings.
- If the RSS feed itself is broken, contact the publisher.
Choosing a replacement app
| Service | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Music | Listeners who want Google’s official successor and already use YouTube. | Podcasts share an interface and account ecosystem with music and video. |
| Pocket Casts | People seeking a dedicated, cross-platform podcast app. | Some cross-device or advanced features may depend on its current plan structure. |
| Podcast Addict | Android power users who want extensive management controls. | It is not an iOS option and may feel complex to minimalist users. |
| AntennaPod | Android listeners who prefer an open-source, RSS-oriented app. | It may not provide the same polished, proprietary sync ecosystem as commercial services. |
| Apple Podcasts | Listeners invested in Apple devices and system integration. | It is less appealing for Android users or people wanting a neutral, highly customizable RSS workflow. |
| Spotify | People who want music and podcasts in one service. | Its catalog and controls are not the same as a dedicated RSS-first podcast manager. |
| Overcast | Apple users who want a podcast-focused playback experience. | It is aimed primarily at the Apple ecosystem. |
When comparing apps, check OPML import, RSS support, synchronization, playback speed, automatic downloads, queue tools, history retention, car or wearable support, privacy practices and whether important features require payment. Current prices and regional availability vary and are not stated here.
What listeners should remember
- April 2, 2024 was the U.S. listening cutoff, not a worldwide date.
- Google moved the listening service, not the podcasts themselves; publisher feeds generally continued elsewhere.
- YouTube Music was optional. OPML was the platform-neutral escape route.
- Exporting subscriptions did not guarantee preservation of history, queue, downloads or playback position.
- Manual RSS addition was the recovery method for shows that did not match.
- Listener migration and the separate Google Podcasts Manager creator service had different deadlines.
The Bottom Line
Google Podcasts is gone. If you still have an old subscription list, use an OPML-compatible app or add feeds manually; choose YouTube Music only if its combined music, video and podcast design suits you.
