When YouTube stops, the clue is what happens next: a “Continue watching?” prompt usually means an intentional inactivity check; a video that ends without advancing points to Autoplay; a spinner suggests buffering; and a frozen picture or app crash points toward a device, app, or browser problem. Note the message, timing, and device before changing settings.
Identify what kind of stop you are seeing
| What happens | Likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| A “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt appears | YouTube’s inactivity check | Select Yes to resume. YouTube says the prompt may appear after a period of uninterrupted viewing with Autoplay enabled. |
| A video ends, but another does not start | Autoplay is off or was interrupted | Check the Autoplay setting on the device you are using. |
| A spinner appears, or playback repeatedly loads | Network instability, congestion, or video quality too high for the current connection | Lower video quality and test another connection. |
| The picture freezes, but audio continues or stops | Browser, app, device, or graphics-rendering problem | Try another video or device; if it is a computer, test another browser. |
| The app closes or the player goes blank | App or browser failure | Reopen the app or reload the page, then check for updates. |
| The entire screen turns off | Device sleep or power-saving behavior | Check the screen timeout and battery settings. |
Timing can narrow it down. A stop near a regular interval suggests an inactivity check; a stop at the end of every video suggests Autoplay; and an unpredictable stop within one video is more consistent with buffering, a video-specific issue, or an app or browser problem.
If YouTube asks whether you are still watching
YouTube says its “Continue watching?” prompt may appear with Autoplay enabled after about 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV. The prompt is intended to protect watch history and avoid using data when a viewer may not be watching. Choose Yes to continue. These are approximate thresholds YouTube describes, not a guaranteed timer for every session. YouTube’s explanation of the prompt.
If playback stops at one of these intervals and shows the prompt, that is different from buffering or a failed connection. The cited guidance explains how to resume, but does not establish a universal setting to permanently disable the prompt.

If the next video does not start
Autoplay determines whether another video starts after the current one. It is separate from the inactivity prompt: enabling Autoplay does not necessarily prevent YouTube from asking whether you are still watching. Autoplay preferences can also differ by device. YouTube’s Autoplay help.
- Computer: Open a YouTube watch page and use the Autoplay switch at the bottom of the player.
- Android or iPhone: Tap your profile picture, open Settings, select Autoplay, and change the setting.
- Smart TV: In the YouTube app, open Settings, scroll to Autoplay, and select the option you want.
Even with Autoplay on, YouTube says the next video may not start if you scroll away from the player or type a search or comment. A mobile Autoplay stop after inactivity is also not the same as the “Continue watching?” prompt: YouTube documents automatic stopping after 30 minutes of inactivity on a mobile network or four hours on Wi-Fi. Those behaviors are described separately in its Autoplay guidance.
If playback buffers or repeatedly loads
Buffering means the player has run short of video data ready to play. The connection may be too slow or unstable for the selected quality, even if a speed test looks adequate. Wi-Fi signal weakness, interference, congestion, competing streams, packet loss, or router problems can all matter.

Try the least disruptive network checks first
- Temporarily lower the video quality using the player’s settings. If a lower quality plays steadily while a higher one buffers, the connection or its stability is likely involved; the trade-off is a less detailed picture.
- Try another connection, such as switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data where practical. If playback works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, the home network or its route to YouTube is a likely place to investigate.
- Pause or reduce other household streams and downloads, and close unnecessary browser tabs or applications.
- Restart the browser or YouTube app and the device. If multiple services or devices are affected, restarting the router may be a useful diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Use a wired connection where possible, especially for a computer or TV near the router.
YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds are listed below. They are guidance, not guaranteed minimums; a connection can meet a speed figure and still buffer if it is congested or unstable. YouTube’s connection and playback-quality guidance.

If other streaming services buffer too, or several devices lose their connection, the issue is more likely to involve the network, router, or internet service than YouTube alone.
If YouTube stops only in a computer browser
Browser extensions, stale site data, an outdated browser, or graphics rendering can interfere with playback. Work through these checks in order; they help isolate the cause before you clear stored data or change system settings. YouTube specifically lists extensions, including ad blockers, as possible contributors—not as the default explanation. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance.

- Reload the YouTube page, then close unnecessary tabs and programs.
- Update the browser and test YouTube in a private or Incognito window. If playback works there, an extension or stored browser state may be involved.
- Disable extensions one at a time, paying particular attention to ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, and video-enhancement tools. Re-enable them selectively to identify whether one changes playback.
- If the problem continues, clear YouTube’s cached data and cookies, then try another supported browser.
If the image is green, black, corrupted, or frozen while audio continues, test another browser. On Chrome, YouTube documents this hardware-acceleration path: More > Settings > Advanced > System > turn off Use hardware acceleration when available. The exact labels may vary by browser version. If rendering remains faulty, check for operating-system or graphics-driver updates. This setting is most relevant to visual glitches or crashes, not a regular inactivity pause. If playback stops when the screen locks
Check whether the device is entering sleep, applying a battery restriction, or limiting background activity. Ordinary playback with the screen on is different from background play: YouTube lists background play as a Premium benefit on supported mobile apps, but Premium is not a general fix for buffering, crashes, or inactivity prompts. YouTube Premium benefits and supported devices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If it stops on a smart TV, streaming stick, or console
- Exit and reopen the YouTube app.
- Power-cycle the device: unplug it, wait at least 30 seconds, and reconnect it.
- Check for updates to both the YouTube app and the device’s system software or firmware.
- If the platform permits it, reinstall the YouTube app.
- Try another streaming app. If several apps fail, investigate the device or network; if only YouTube fails, focus on the YouTube app or a service-specific issue.
- Try YouTube on another supported device using the same network. If that works, the original TV or streaming device is a stronger suspect.
YouTube recommends power-cycling and checking app and device updates for TV playback problems. If more than one service fails after these steps, consult the device manufacturer. YouTube playback troubleshooting and YouTube TV app help.
If only one video stops
Try another video at the same quality, then retry the affected video after refreshing the page or reopening the app. If it fails only on one device, test it on another. A problem limited to one video may be video-specific or tied to that playback session; it does not by itself prove that the video is defective. Signing out and back in is worth trying only when the behavior appears tied to your account or session.

If you mean YouTube TV
YouTube TV is a separate live-TV service, so its interruptions can have additional causes. Multiple simultaneous streams may contribute to buffering; live playback can also be affected by location or playback-area checks and by the selected broadcast delay. YouTube TV says a lower broadcast delay leaves less buffer and can make interruptions more likely. Use its YouTube TV troubleshooting guidance for service-specific checks.
When to escalate
Contact the relevant support team when the problem persists across multiple supported devices and networks, or when a device overheats, crashes, or loses network connectivity. If only a TV or streaming stick fails after updates, contact its manufacturer. If other services and devices also fail, ask your internet provider about the connection. For explicit licensing, payment, or protected-media errors, use the error message and account details when contacting the service that issued it.
