YouTube Music’s official 10-year celebration took place on August 21, 2025—not in 2026. The anniversary announcement focused on bringing listeners closer to artists and other fans through shared playlists, concert listings, notifications, badges and video milestones. Some items were announced as coming soon, so the announcement should not be mistaken for proof that every feature is now available to every account.
What reached its 10th anniversary?
YouTube’s anniversary post called the milestone “10 years of fandom on YouTube Music.” The original dedicated YouTube Music product dates to 2015, while Google later introduced a substantially reworked streaming service beginning May 22, 2018. That 2018 relaunch brought a redesigned app and desktop player, an official music catalog, and a service built around recordings alongside remixes, live performances, covers and music videos. These are different milestones, so describing 2018 as the service’s first appearance leaves out its earlier history. YouTube’s 2025 anniversary announcement uses the broader fandom framing; its 2018 announcement describes the relaunch.
What features did YouTube announce?
Taste Match playlists
Taste Match combines the listening tastes of participating users in a shared playlist that YouTube said would update daily. It is meant to make discovery among friends an ongoing mix rather than a static playlist that someone has to maintain by hand. YouTube’s announcement describes the feature, but menu labels and availability can vary; it did not establish a single current creation path for every device or account.
Comments on albums and playlists
YouTube said users would soon be able to comment directly on albums and playlists. That wording described an upcoming feature, not universal availability at announcement. Comments inside YouTube Music are distinct from ordinary comments on YouTube videos, and the announcement does not establish which types of playlists or albums receive them or whether they are now available to all users.

Concert listings through Bandsintown
YouTube announced an exclusive partnership with Bandsintown to surface nearby and upcoming concerts in more places across YouTube and YouTube Music, including artist pages, music videos, Shorts and Official Artist Channels. Listings depend on location and the event data available for an artist, venue and region. A listing is a discovery aid, not a guarantee that tickets are available or that the event inventory is complete.
Artist and release notifications
The announcement described notifications for upcoming releases, new merchandise and newly added event dates. Whether a notification arrives can depend on whether you follow or subscribe to an artist, your device’s notification permissions, whether the artist or label has supplied the relevant information, and regional rollout or account settings.
Fan badges and video milestones
YouTube highlighted “First to Watch” and “Top Listener” badges to recognize early viewers and highly engaged listeners. The current YouTube Music Help page also lists fan badges, including Top Listener. These are platform engagement signals, not independently audited rankings, and not every listener will receive every badge.

YouTube also said it would highlight official artist videos approaching view milestones such as 100,000, 1 million or 1 billion views, inviting fans to help them reach the next threshold. This is a fandom prompt, not a change to playback or audio quality.
What YouTube Music offers beyond the anniversary features
YouTube said the service had more than 300 million tracks when it made the anniversary announcement. The company’s term is “tracks,” and its count includes a range of material such as studio recordings, remixes, live performances and covers. It should not be read as 300 million unique songs or compared directly with another service’s catalog count unless the counting methods match.
Free, ad-supported listening
YouTube’s current Help documentation lists on-demand playback for songs, music videos and podcasts in the ad-supported experience, along with queuing, repeat, unlimited skips, Samples and Music Tuner. It also lists audio-only playback, background play and downloads for most podcasts. Access can differ by country, account, platform and content, but free YouTube Music is not limited to radio-style listening. See YouTube Music’s feature and membership details.

YouTube Music Premium
Music Premium adds ad-free music, background play for music, audio-only music playback and music downloads for offline listening. YouTube says members may still hear ads in podcasts and encounter creator-embedded branding or promotions; a paid music membership does not remove every promotion from every piece of content. Details are in YouTube’s Premium membership documentation.
YouTube Premium
Full YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium and adds benefits across YouTube, YouTube Kids and YouTube Music, including ad-free YouTube videos, downloads and background playback. The practical distinction is simple: consider Music Premium if your priority is music; consider YouTube Premium if you also want those benefits while watching standard YouTube. Plan formats listed by YouTube include monthly individual, prepaid, family, two-person and student plans, subject to location and eligibility. Check the current plan information and the live membership purchase page for options and prices where you are.
Is YouTube Music a better alternative to Spotify or Apple Music?
There is no universal winner in the anniversary features. They make YouTube Music more community- and video-oriented, but do not by themselves establish superior audio quality, library organization, recommendations or cross-platform playback. The useful comparison is what kind of listening matters to you.

| What matters to you | YouTube Music’s case | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Remixes, covers and live versions | YouTube’s wider video ecosystem can put official recordings alongside covers, remixes and live performances. | Multiple versions may appear together, making it harder to identify the official album or studio recording. |
| Music videos and YouTube use | Music videos and integration with the broader YouTube service are central strengths. | The advantage matters less if you rarely watch YouTube and mainly want an audio-only service. |
| Concert and artist discovery | Artist notifications, concert surfaces and fan features connect listening with artist activity. | Event information depends on geography, artist coverage and third-party data; features may roll out unevenly. |
| Playlist culture and social sharing | Taste Match is designed to combine participating listeners’ preferences. | Its availability and in-app flow are not established as universal, and some fandom features may not matter to listeners who prefer private listening. |
| Offline music | Music downloads are included with Music Premium. | Downloading music requires a paid membership; full YouTube Premium may be the better fit if you also want benefits on standard YouTube. |
YouTube’s original service announcement emphasized discovery through searches that could use lyrics or less precise descriptions, as well as access to video-centered music material. That helps explain why its catalog can be useful for finding a particular performance, but also why it can feel less standardized than a conventional album-only library. YouTube’s 2018 service description outlines that broader catalog approach.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which membership, if any, makes sense?
- Stay on the free tier if on-demand listening and the listed free features meet your needs and ads are acceptable.
- Choose YouTube Music Premium if ad-free music, background play and offline music are the benefits you want.
- Consider YouTube Premium if you also spend enough time watching regular YouTube to value its ad-free viewing, downloads and background playback.
Music Premium does not eliminate creator-embedded sponsorships or all podcast promotions. YouTube documents those exceptions, as well as the bundled Music Premium benefit, on its membership information page. Membership availability, eligibility and displayed prices depend on location and plan; use the live purchase flow rather than assuming one price applies everywhere.
Why a feature may be missing or not working
Taste Match or comments do not appear
- Update YouTube Music and confirm you are signed into the Google Account you intend to use.
- Check playlist or sharing surfaces without assuming a particular menu path; labels and placement can differ by app version and platform.
- Allow for account, regional or platform rollout differences. For album and playlist comments in particular, YouTube announced the feature as coming soon; that announcement alone does not confirm broad current availability.
Concerts are missing or seem irrelevant
Check that the location is accurate and that location access is enabled if the app requests it. An artist may have no upcoming event data, the event may be outside the relevant area, or Bandsintown may not list the venue or event. Concert listings do not guarantee ticket inventory.

Premium appears to show an ad
First distinguish a YouTube-served ad from a creator’s sponsorship or promotion embedded in content. Podcast ads and creator-embedded promotions may remain for Music Premium members; YouTube’s membership documentation also describes other content-specific exceptions to ad-free playback. Check YouTube’s explanation of Premium ad exceptions.
Downloads are unavailable
- Confirm the account with the active membership is signed in and that the membership is current.
- Check available device storage and whether the particular content can be downloaded.
- For podcasts, some episodes or shows may not support audio-only downloads; YouTube says some podcast downloads may be available without membership, but support can vary.
- Keep the device online periodically so membership status can be verified.
YouTube’s download and membership guidance covers these limitations.
A badge or ranking disappears
Treat badges as engagement indicators tied to platform-defined activity, not permanent credentials. A badge or ranking can relate to a particular artist, video or measurement period; it is not proof of a listener’s standing outside YouTube.
