Winamp’s “new platform” is not simply a newer version of the classic Windows player. The company’s strategy now has three separate parts: a short-lived 2024 publication of the desktop player’s source code under a restrictive license, an active Winamp for Creators service for independent artists, and a planned Winamp consumer player powered by Deezer technology that Winamp says is targeted for the first half of 2027.
The short timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 2024 | Winamp announced that the Windows player’s source code would be published for developer collaboration. |
| September 24, 2024 | The code was published on GitHub under the Winamp Collaborative License. |
| October 2024 | The official repository was removed or hidden after license criticism and concerns about third-party or proprietary components. |
| 2025–2026 | Winamp emphasized its creator-services business, including distribution, rights administration and direct-to-fan tools. |
| First half of 2027 | Winamp says a new consumer player, using Deezer’s white-label streaming technology and catalog access, is planned. |
The 2024 code event, the creator platform and the future streaming player should therefore be treated as different products and initiatives.

What Winamp released in 2024
Winamp announced in May 2024 that it would open the Windows desktop player’s source code to developers worldwide on September 24. The stated goal was to let the community help improve a long-running Windows application, while Winamp retained ownership and final control over what could enter the official product.

Why the release was not ordinary open source
The surviving license text is the Winamp Collaborative License, Version 1.0.1. It permits inspection and private modification, but it does not grant the normal freedom to publish a modified fork or distribute modified binaries.
| Question | Conventional open-source project | Winamp Collaborative License |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect the code | Usually permitted | Permitted |
| Modify privately | Usually permitted | Permitted |
| Publish a modified source fork | Usually permitted under the license | Prohibited by the license text |
| Distribute modified binaries | Usually permitted under the license | Prohibited by the license text |
| Who controls official releases? | Depends on the project | Winamp retains explicit control |
The license also assigns intellectual-property rights in submitted contributions to Winamp and says Winamp is not obligated to provide support, updates or maintenance. “Source-available” or “restricted collaborative source” is therefore more precise than calling the project fully open source.

Why the GitHub repository disappeared
The repository was publicly visible for only a short period and was removed or hidden in October 2024. Developers criticized the restrictive license, and discussions also raised concerns that the tree included code or components that could not straightforwardly be redistributed.
Winamp’s exact internal reason for the removal has not been established publicly. The defensible conclusion is that the repository disappeared after a turbulent few weeks involving both licensing objections and apparent third-party or proprietary-code concerns. An independent account is available from Adafruit, alongside the forum discussion.
- The official repository is no longer available at the location used for the 2024 release.
- A mirror or fork is not automatically an official Winamp release.
- Its existence does not prove that redistribution is authorized.
- Developers should check provenance, commit history, bundled dependencies, license terms and security before using any surviving copy.
The publication therefore created a temporary opportunity to study the player, not a durable, conventional open-source ecosystem.

Plans and advertised pricing
When checked on August 16, 2026, Winamp’s pricing page advertised an Essential tier as free, with no credit card required, and an Ultra tier at €12.99 per month or €155.88 billed annually. A 30-day Ultra trial was also advertised. Prices, taxes, eligibility and included features can change by territory and date, so treat those figures as the page’s stated terms on that date.
Current plan information: winamp.com/artists/pricing.
Revenue and contractual details
Winamp’s support pages list copyright revenue retention of 88%–92% of gross revenue depending on plan, and Content ID retention of 75%–85% of gross YouTube revenue depending on plan. Those percentages do not automatically apply to distribution, licensing, merchandising or every other service.
- The copyright service says it involves a 12-month agreement and a mandate covering royalties from digital services and traditional media. Review the scope before signing: support.winamp.com/copyright.
- Content ID users should resolve any existing provider arrangement before switching, because duplicate claims can create disputes: support.winamp.com/contentid.
- Distribution review and processing can take up to 10 business days; the support breakdown describes quality control as normally taking four to eight workdays and distribution up to two workdays: support.winamp.com/distribution.
Winamp has reported different artist totals at different times—for example, more than 75,000 in a 2025 results announcement and more than 35,000 in an earlier 2026 product announcement. These are company-reported snapshots, not a single independently audited active-user measure.
The planned Deezer-powered consumer player
Winamp says its next-generation consumer product is a Winamp-branded premium music subscription using Deezer’s white-label streaming technology and access to Deezer’s global catalog. The announced target is the first half of 2027; it is not a generally available replacement for the classic player as of August 16, 2026.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What different readers should expect
Classic Winamp users
The 2024 source publication did not turn Winamp into a normally maintained, community-governed open-source player. The official repository is gone, and the future consumer product is still planned rather than released. Existing desktop software should be treated as legacy software whose current compatibility and support need to be checked separately.
Developers and preservationists
The code release remains historically useful for studying a major Windows music application, but private experimentation is different from legally distributing a fork. Surviving copies require careful review of license terms and third-party components.

Independent artists
Winamp for Creators may suit artists who want distribution plus rights administration, Content ID and direct-to-fan tools in one account. Before enrolling, check country support, payment and tax handling, ownership of masters and compositions, exclusivity, catalog migration, takedown procedures and how “gross” revenue is defined.
Listeners seeking one local-and-streaming library
The announced Deezer-powered player is the relevant initiative, but the practical decision must wait for launch details, pricing, supported regions and device information.
Alternatives while the plans evolve
For local playback, separate projects such as WACUP, foobar2000, MusicBee, VLC and Audacious offer different combinations of library management, customization, platform support and classic-player styling. WACUP is a separate project, not an official Winamp fork.
Artists can also compare DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby and UnitedMasters. Compare ownership, store coverage, Content ID policies, payment schedules, support, takedowns and subscription or per-release fees—not just a headline revenue percentage.
What remains unresolved
- Whether Winamp will publish another official desktop source tree or a revised license
- How the legacy Windows player will be maintained
- The final launch date, price, regions and platforms for the Deezer-powered player
- Its offline, cloud-library and account features
- How the creator platform will connect to the future consumer subscription
The Bottom Line
Winamp did publish the classic player’s source code in September 2024, but under a license that blocked public forks and distribution of modified versions; the repository was then removed. The company’s durable direction is an active artist-services platform today and a planned Deezer-powered consumer player for the first half of 2027—not a straightforward open-source revival of the old desktop app.
