Most streaming services can show devices and recent account activity, not the verified identity of the person holding the remote. To remove unwanted access, review the service’s device or security page, sign out unfamiliar devices, use a global logout when needed, change the password, and secure the email or parent account connected to billing.
First, work out what “someone is using my account” means
An alert or unfamiliar viewing history does not always mean a stranger has hacked you. It may indicate:
- Concurrent streaming: legitimate household members or a forgotten stream have reached the plan’s simultaneous-use limit.
- A saved session: a hotel, rental, former roommate’s TV, phone, browser, game console, Roku, Fire TV or other device remains signed in.
- An authorized device: the service still associates a device with the account.
- Profile activity: someone used a profile, but the profile name does not prove who used it.
- Household enforcement: the service believes a device is outside the permitted household.
- Account takeover: the email, password, recovery details, payment method or subscription changed without your permission.
Disney+’s maximum-device error, for example, sends subscribers to Manage Devices; that identifies recently active devices, not a person’s identity. Disney+ error 75 guidance
The fastest way to lock down any streaming account
- Open the service’s account or security page in a web browser.
- Review recent devices, sessions, profiles, locations and activity where available.
- Sign out, remove or deregister unfamiliar devices.
- Use Sign out everywhere when individual removal is unavailable or the account may be compromised.
- Immediately create a unique password that you have never used elsewhere.
- Enable two-factor authentication or a passkey for the streaming account, email account or parent account whenever offered.
- Check profiles, recovery email, payment details, household settings and add-on purchases.
- Sign in again only on devices you recognize.
A global logout also disconnects legitimate family devices, so televisions and streaming boxes will need to be authenticated again. Max explicitly states that changing the password signs the account out of all devices. Max account security instructions

Netflix
- Sign in and open Manage Access and Devices in account settings.
- Review the device, device type, recent profile and last watched date and time.
- Select the arrow beside a device, then choose Sign Out.
- To disconnect everything, choose Sign Out of All Devices at the bottom.
Netflix says devices can take up to 48 hours to appear. The list covers recent activity, not every device that has ever signed in; devices inactive for more than 90 days, devices used only for Netflix games or Tudum, and some incomplete device records may be omitted. The Windows app may appear as an Edge browser. Netflix: Manage Access and Devices
If Netflix reports an unfamiliar sign-in, change the password and sign out all devices. Its location is derived from the device’s IP address and may not match the person’s physical location. If an unfamiliar household-member email is attached to a profile, review Manage Profiles, remove it, change the password and sign out everywhere; Netflix says the removed user may be signed out within 24 hours. Apple Account and Apple TV
Apple distinguishes devices currently signed in to an Apple Account from devices associated with that account for purchases and downloads. On a Mac or Windows PC, open Apple Music or Apple TV, open account settings and select Manage Devices to review associated devices. Removing an associated purchase device does not necessarily terminate every Apple Account session, so secure the Apple Account itself as well. Apple: view and remove associated devices

What a device list can—and cannot—tell you
| Service or ecosystem | What you can check | Removal method | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Recent device, type, profile and last watched time | Individual Sign Out or Sign Out of All Devices | Up to 48-hour reporting delay; inactive devices may be omitted |
| Disney+ | Device type, general location, activity time and eligible profile | Account → Access & Security → Manage Devices → Log Out | Recent-device view, not identity verification |
| Max | Devices with account access | Change password to force global logout | Individual behavior depends on the live interface |
| Spotify | App sessions and partner access | Sign out everywhere; separately remove partner access | Global sign-out excludes speakers, consoles and TVs |
| YouTube ecosystem | Google device activity and YouTube-on-TV access | Google Device activity → Sign out or remove access | Separate family Google Accounts may not appear |
| Apple Account | Associated purchase devices and account sign-ins | Manage associated devices; secure Apple Account separately | Associated devices are not current sessions |
Use several clues together: device type, approximate location, last active time, profile, watch history and whether the device matches a known TV, console or phone. VPNs, cellular networks, ISP routing, travel and privacy tools can make an IP-based city misleading. A profile name is evidence of activity, not proof of who used the device.
If the device is missing from the list
- Check whether the service reports only recent activity.
- Allow for reporting delays; Netflix documents a possible 48-hour delay.
- Try alternate labels: a smart TV may appear by platform or manufacturer, a Windows app as a browser, and a streaming stick under a generic name.
- Confirm the person is not using a separate family member’s account.
- Change the password and force a global logout.
- Review the account email, recovery methods, payment information and subscription changes.
- Contact official support if the email or password changed without permission.
An absent device is not automatically safe; it may be inactive, outside the reporting window or authenticated through another parent account.
If the person keeps getting back in
- They may know the new password or a reused password exposed elsewhere.
- An old session token or third-party integration may remain authorized.
- A speaker, console or TV may require separate partner-access removal.
- The recovery email or parent billing account may be compromised.
- A family or household account may still grant access.
Change the streaming password again, change the associated email password if compromise is plausible, enable two-factor authentication or passkeys, remove third-party access, review payment settings and stop sharing the new password. Escalate to official support if unauthorized access continues.
Prevent another unwanted login
- Use a unique, randomly generated password for every service; a password manager such as Bitwarden, 1Password or Dashlane can store it.
- Turn on the service’s own two-factor or passkey feature where available.
- Review device activity periodically.
- Sign out of hotel, Airbnb, rental and borrowed TVs before leaving.
- Secure both the streaming account and any Apple, Google, Amazon, cable or mobile account used for sign-in or billing.
- Check recovery details, profiles, household settings and payment activity after a suspected breach.
Uninstalling an app from a television is not the same as signing out or revoking authorization, and a password manager cannot remotely remove an already-authorized device.
