Apple’s tvOS 26 update, announced on June 9, 2025 and publicly released on September 15, 2025, brings the Liquid Glass interface to Apple TV and adds an option to show user profiles whenever the device wakes. Apple’s support documentation listed tvOS 26.6 as the current feature branch on August 18, 2026. The update is free on supported Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models, although individual features vary by hardware, region, and language.
What Liquid Glass changes on Apple TV
Liquid Glass is an interface design material, not a new screen technology or coating. It uses translucency, reflections, refraction, layered surfaces, and real-time rendering so controls sit over video without completely obscuring it. Apple says the treatment appears in everyday actions such as fast-forwarding, rewinding, starting a sleep timer, changing audio, opening Control Center, activating a “Movie Night” scene, and browsing the Apple TV app. The redesign is concentrated in Apple’s system interface and first-party experiences; it does not improve picture resolution, Wi‑Fi performance, or codec support.
Apple also redesigned the TV app with cinematic poster artwork. The visual effect is most apparent on newer Apple TV 4K hardware, while older compatible devices may receive a less complete treatment.
Apple’s announcement describes the design and examples in detail at Apple Newsroom.

Profile selection when Apple TV wakes
tvOS 26 adds a setting that can display profiles as Apple TV wakes. A household member can select their profile before entering personalized Apple TV and Apple Music content, rather than opening the device first and switching users afterward.
The active profile can affect Apple TV recommendations, Watchlists, Apple Music playlists, and profile-related communication notifications. Look in the Apple TV user or profile settings for the option to display profiles when the device wakes; Apple confirms the capability but does not publish a permanently stable, detailed menu path for every release and region.
What profile switching does—and does not—change
Apple services
System profiles are designed to keep Apple TV and Apple Music personalization separate for people sharing one box. Selecting a profile before use helps prevent new viewing and listening activity from being associated with the wrong Apple account.
Third-party streaming apps
This is not a universal Netflix-, Disney+-, or Prime Video-style account switch. Each streaming app controls its own profiles and credentials. An app may stay signed in to the account last used, require its own profile picker, or adopt Apple’s newer account-linking technology later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteApple’s account-linking API
Apple introduced a developer API intended to associate app logins with an Apple Account during Apple TV setup. It can reduce sign-in work on a new device, but it only changes behavior in apps whose developers implement it. Details are in Apple’s tvOS 26 release notes.

Which Apple TV models support tvOS 26?
Apple’s model guide lists Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models from the first generation onward. Earlier Apple TV models are no longer supported. Software compatibility does not mean every device receives every effect or hardware-dependent feature.
| Device | tvOS 26 support | Expected feature coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV HD | Yes | Not all tvOS 26 features; visual effects may be limited. |
| Apple TV 4K (1st generation) | Yes | Some newer visual or device-dependent features may be limited. |
| Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) | Yes | Broad Liquid Glass support and current feature compatibility. |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) | Yes | Broadest support among the listed models. |

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read the listed tvOS version.
Install an available update
- Open Settings.
- Select System.

Menu wording can vary slightly by release or region. The update is free for compatible devices; Apple’s current support information is the best reference if an update does not appear.
Who will notice the biggest improvement?
High value
- Households that share one Apple TV and frequently switch between people.
- People who use the Apple TV app or Apple Music.
- Owners of second- or third-generation Apple TV 4K models.
- Homes using FaceTime, AirPlay, HomePod, or other Apple services.
More modest value
If you mainly open Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, or another third-party app, much of the redesign may be invisible and profile behavior remains app-specific. The update still brings security and compatibility maintenance, but Liquid Glass alone is unlikely to transform that workflow.

Troubleshooting common problems
- No profile picker at wake: Confirm tvOS 26 is installed, profiles are configured, and the wake-screen profile option is enabled.
- An app opens on the wrong account: That service may not support Apple’s account-linked login behavior; switch accounts inside the app.
- Liquid Glass looks subdued: Older hardware can receive a reduced visual treatment, and the effect is strongest in system screens rather than third-party apps.
- No update is offered: Verify that the device is Apple TV HD or a listed Apple TV 4K model, then check network access and try Software Updates again.
- Recommendations remain mixed: Switching profiles does not retroactively move history already recorded under another account.
- Restrictions seem inconsistent: Profile selection and parental controls are separate systems; test each profile’s restrictions after switching.
Do you need a new Apple TV?
Most existing owners do not. Apple supports tvOS 26 on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models from the first generation onward, subject to feature limits. Replacing hardware solely for Liquid Glass is difficult to justify when an existing unit already runs tvOS 26 and the household rarely uses Apple’s first-party apps.
A new Apple TV 4K is more reasonable if the current box is an unsupported pre-HD model, an Apple TV HD owner wants 4K HDR, performance is inadequate, or the household needs current hardware features. Apple’s U.S. store showed the following prices when checked for this guide; hardware prices can change:
| Model | Apple U.S. price (as checked) | Notable hardware |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K Wi‑Fi, 64GB | $129 | Wi‑Fi; HDMI cable sold separately. |
| Apple TV 4K Wi‑Fi + Ethernet, 128GB | $149 | Ethernet, 128GB storage, and Thread networking support. |
See Apple’s 64GB buying page and 128GB buying page for current availability. Choose the Ethernet model for a wired network or Thread smart-home needs; reliable Wi‑Fi users generally gain little from paying more. HDMI cables are sold separately, but an existing standards-compliant cable may be sufficient.
AppleCare+ is optional protection rather than a requirement for this relatively low-cost device; verify current eligibility and pricing at checkout using Apple’s AppleCare+ terms.
Bottom line
tvOS 26 is a meaningful quality-of-life update for shared households and people invested in Apple TV, Apple Music, and FaceTime. Liquid Glass modernizes the interface without changing streaming picture quality, while wake-screen profile selection makes personalization faster. Because supported hardware receives the update with differing feature coverage—and third-party apps still manage their own accounts—most owners should update first and consider new hardware only for capability, performance, or support reasons.
