Spotify announced a Discover Weekly revamp on June 30, 2025, marking the playlist’s 10th anniversary. The update added a refreshed design and up to five personalized genre controls. Choosing a displayed genre creates a fresh 30-track mix, while the main Discover Weekly playlist remains a personalized playlist that refreshes every Monday.
What changed in Discover Weekly
A new visual presentation
Spotify gave Discover Weekly a more vibrant artwork and presentation that changes with the weekly discovery experience. This is a design and navigation change; Spotify’s announcement does not document a replacement recommendation model or disclose new ranking technology.
Up to five personalized genre controls
At the top of the playlist, eligible listeners may see up to five genre options selected from their listening history. These are not a complete genre catalogue or a general-purpose browser. Spotify chooses the options it considers relevant to that account.
A fresh 30-track genre mix
Selecting one of the displayed genres generates a new 30-track playlist inspired by that choice. It is an on-demand way to steer the current discovery session, separate from the normal Monday refresh of Discover Weekly.

Spotify announced these changes on June 30, 2025. The company later described Discover Weekly as even more personalized after the previous year’s refresh, but has not announced a new major Discover Weekly overhaul since then.
How to find and use Discover Weekly
- Open Spotify.
- Go to Home.
- Select Made For You.
- Open Discover Weekly.
You can also search for “Discover Weekly.” Spotify says new accounts may need several weeks of listening before personalized playlists become meaningful. Menu placement and labels can vary by operating system, app version, account, market and product tests. The current navigation guidance is in Spotify’s playlist support documentation.
Who has the genre controls?
Spotify introduced the controls as a mobile, Premium-first rollout, with plans to expand access. That wording does not establish permanent availability for every Premium account or every country. Access can depend on market, device, account and rollout status. Spotify’s Premium benefits page lists discovery features but does not provide a universal eligibility table for these Discover Weekly controls.

What did not change
- Discover Weekly remains personalized rather than identical for every listener.
- Spotify’s support page says it refreshes every Monday.
- The genre controls do not prove that Spotify replaced or fundamentally rebuilt its recommendation algorithm.
- The 30-track figure applies to the genre-selected version described in the anniversary announcement, not necessarily to every ordinary weekly instance.
Spotify describes personalized playlists as algorithmic recommendations that can operate with pools selected by editors. The system can use what you play, save, skip and add to playlists, along with behavior from listeners with similar tastes and other signals. That makes Discover Weekly neither purely editorial nor a system based only on raw play counts. Spotify explains playlist types for artists at its artist support page.

How to improve recommendations that feel wrong
Use signals deliberately
Save and replay tracks that represent the direction you want. Skip tracks that are poor fits, and add worthwhile discoveries to playlists. Spotify identifies these actions as signals used by personalized playlists.

Exclude misleading listening
Temporary listening can distort recommendations: children’s music, sleep playlists, holiday tracks, ambient background music or a one-off workout session may not represent your normal taste. Open the relevant playlist or track, select the three-dot menu, and choose Exclude from your taste profile for a playlist or Exclude track from your taste profile for one song.
Spotify says exclusions can take effect within 48 hours, while some recommendations—including Discover Weekly—may not reflect the change until the following week. Instructions appear on Spotify’s taste-profile support page.

Hide in this playlist stops a song from playing in that particular playlist but does not change your taste profile. Exclusion is the relevant control when you want to influence future recommendations. Spotify explains the distinction and timing at this support page.

If the genre controls are missing
- Update Spotify and check the mobile app, since the original rollout was mobile-first.
- Open Search → Made For You → Discover Weekly and confirm you are viewing the correct playlist.
- Check whether the account is Premium and whether the feature has launched in your market.
- Restart the app or sign out and back in.
- Allow time for staged rollout or account-side testing to finish.
- If a control that previously appeared has disappeared, contact Spotify support.
There is no evidence that deleting an account or abandoning listening history is a normal fix.
Why the revamp matters
The controls add a middle ground between passive recommendations and a fully specified request. A listener can steer discovery toward a Spotify-selected lane without building a playlist from scratch. The trade-off is that personalization may reinforce existing habits: the available genres reflect prior behavior, labels can feel subjective, and two people choosing the same genre will not necessarily receive similar songs. Spotify says “up to five,” so some accounts may see fewer.
Spotify reported that, by Discover Weekly’s 10th anniversary, users had streamed more than 100 billion tracks through the playlist. It also reported more than 56 million new artist discoveries per week, with 77% involving emerging artists. These are Spotify’s own company-reported figures, not independently audited measurements, and they indicate discovery activity rather than guaranteed streams, income or career outcomes. The figures appear in Spotify’s anniversary announcement.

For artists, Discover Weekly remains part of Spotify’s broader recommendation ecosystem. More user steering could influence which kinds of tracks receive attention, but Spotify has not said that the genre controls change eligibility, ranking rules or guaranteed reach for artists.
Do not confuse this with Spotify’s 2026 Release Radar update
Spotify’s July 10, 2026 announcement concerned new controls and presentation for Release Radar, which focuses on new releases and refreshes on Fridays. It was not a second major Discover Weekly redesign. See Spotify’s Release Radar update for that separate development.
Verdict
Discover Weekly’s 2025 anniversary revamp is best understood as a lightweight steering layer over a long-running weekly playlist. It adds useful control and a 30-track genre-focused option without replacing the Monday format or establishing a new algorithm. It is most valuable to listeners who want to guide Spotify’s recommendations while retaining the surprise of algorithmic discovery.
