For U.S. Android users in 2024, Pluto TV is the strongest all-around free channel-surfing app, while Tubi leads for movies and Haystack News for continuous news. These services are legal, ad-supported streaming platforms—not complete replacements for cable, local broadcast stations, or premium sports networks. “Android” also covers two different experiences: phone/tablet apps and Android TV or Google TV apps. Availability, catalogs, and registration rules vary by country and device.
This is a historical 2024 guide. Several brands have changed names, ownership, catalogs, or device support since then; check the linked official page and Google Play listing before installing.
What “free live TV” means
Most recommendations below are FAST services (free ad-supported streaming television). Their linear channels run on schedules, like cable, and are funded by advertising. Some also include on-demand movies and episodes, which you select rather than watch on a schedule.
- Live linear channels: scheduled programming in a channel guide.
- Live news feeds: continuous or rolling coverage.
- On-demand libraries: free movies and episodes; useful, but not technically live TV.
- Free broadcast streaming: network or local content limited by rights, geography, or authentication.
- Illegal IPTV: unofficial apps promising hundreds of premium channels. They are not included here.
“Free” normally means no monthly subscription, not no advertising. Internet access is required; some apps allow basic viewing without an account, while favorites, personalization, parental controls, or DVR may require a free login.

Google’s Android TV help lists Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV, and Tubi as services that can supply free channels in the Android TV live-TV interface: Google Android TV Help.
The 15 apps, explained
1. Pluto TV — best overall
Pluto TV is the clearest cable-like experience: open a guide, browse scheduled entertainment, movies, news, comedy, classic television, and niche channels, or switch to on-demand titles. Ads are built in, and channel lists change by country and device. Start at pluto.tv. It is the best first installation for viewers who mainly want to surf.
2. Tubi — best for movies
Tubi’s greatest strength is its large free on-demand movie and TV library, supplemented by a live section. It is better for choosing a title than for recreating a full cable guide. Catalogs vary internationally. Visit tubitv.com.
3. Xumo Play — best cable-style alternative
Xumo Play offers a curated grid of entertainment, movies, news, lifestyle, and niche channels. Do not confuse the app with Xumo-branded hardware; support differs by platform and region. Xumo’s device documentation is at Xumo support.

4. Plex — best with a personal media library

5. Sling Freestream — best free tier with an upgrade path
Freestream is a genuinely free Sling tier, separate from paid Sling Orange and Blue. Sling’s current page advertises more than 600 free live channels and more than 40,000 free on-demand titles; those are current provider figures, not fixed 2024 specifications. Basic viewing can be done without an account; a free account adds features such as favorites, profiles, parental controls, and (on the current service) DVR. See Sling Freestream. Android installation guidance is at Sling Help.
6. The Roku Channel — broad catalog, variable Android support
The Roku Channel combines free live channels with a large on-demand catalog. Roku-device, mobile, and Android TV experiences are not identical, so verify the exact 2024 Android listing before relying on it. Official site: therokuchannel.roku.com.
7. Freevee content in Prime Video — Amazon’s free option
Freevee was a recognizable 2024 ad-supported brand offering live channels and on-demand titles. Amazon subsequently folded more free programming into Prime Video, so a current user may see free labels inside the broader app rather than a separate Freevee destination. A free Amazon account may be required; Prime membership is not automatically required. Check Prime Video.

Choose by what you actually watch
- Channel surfing: Pluto TV or Xumo Play.
- Movies: Tubi; add FilmRise or Crackle for catalog variety.
- News: Haystack News or Local Now.
- Free service with a paid upgrade path: Sling Freestream.
- Personal media plus free channels: Plex.
- Compatible Samsung hardware: Samsung TV Plus.
- Local broadcast stations: use an antenna, your station’s official app/site, or a paid live-TV provider. FAST services do not guarantee every local affiliate.
What these apps generally do not provide
- A complete ESPN, regional-sports, NFL, NBA, MLB, or premium sports package.
- Every ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC station in your ZIP code.
- Every premium cable network or newly released show.
- Ad-free playback.
- DVR and personalization without an account where the service restricts those features.
- A U.S. lineup that remains unchanged when you travel internationally.
Install safely on Android
- Open Google Play on your phone, tablet, Android TV, or Google TV device.
- Search the provider’s exact name and check the publisher before installing.
- Prefer the official app or the provider’s own device channel; avoid unknown APK sites.
- Review requested permissions. A TV app should not need SMS, contacts, accessibility control, or device-admin privileges for ordinary playback.
- Sign in only when the feature requires it, and confirm that “free” labels are separate from rentals, subscriptions, or paid channel packages.
Why lineups and compatibility differ
Licensing is country- and sometimes device-specific. An app can work on an Android phone but be absent from Android TV, or present a different guide on each. Provider channel totals are volatile marketing figures: for example, Sling pages have used both “600-plus” and “500-plus” language at different times. Treat counts as dated, U.S.-specific claims rather than permanent specifications.
Safety and legality checklist
- Choose official Google Play or vendor distribution.
- Avoid apps promising thousands of premium channels for free.
- Do not buy unofficial IPTV subscriptions or pirated sports streams.
- Never sideload an APK merely because an app claims to unlock paid channels.
- Do not use a VPN to bypass regional licensing; it can violate terms and still will not guarantee playback.
FAQ
Are free live-TV apps legal?
The services listed here are legitimate, ad-supported platforms when installed through their official channels. Unofficial IPTV apps and pirated streams are different and are not legal substitutes.
Do they work without Wi-Fi?
They require an internet connection, whether Wi-Fi or mobile data. Offline viewing is generally unavailable on free tiers.
Can they replace cable?
They can replace some entertainment and news viewing, but not a complete cable lineup, every local station, or premium live sports.
Do I need an account?
Requirements vary. Pluto TV, Xumo Play, Plex, and basic Freestream viewing are commonly usable without registration, while accounts may unlock profiles, favorites, parental controls, or DVR. Device and country rules can change.
Why is an app on my phone but not my Android TV?
Phone and television apps have separate certification, controls, and licensing. Check the Android TV/Google TV listing rather than assuming phone compatibility carries over.
What happened to Freevee?
Freevee was a 2024-era Amazon brand. Amazon has increasingly presented free programming inside Prime Video, so branding and app placement should be checked for the date you publish.
