Instagram’s official name for Friend Map is Instagram Map. In the mobile app, open Messages and tap Map at the top of the inbox. You can see recent active locations shared with you and explore location-tagged Instagram content without sharing your own location. Map location sharing is opt-in, according to Meta, and can be limited or switched off.
What Instagram Map shows
The Map combines two different features:
- Recent active locations: locations shared by people whose selected audience includes you.
- Location-based content: location-tagged posts, Reels, Stories and, in some cases, Notes from friends, followed accounts and creators.
It is not a continuously updating GPS tracker. Meta describes the marker as a person’s last active location. It can update when someone opens Instagram or returns to it while the app has been running in the background. Treat a marker as a recent signal, not proof that someone is currently there. Meta’s launch explanation is at about.fb.com.
Meta says location-tagged Reels, posts and Stories from accounts you follow can appear for up to 24 hours after posting. Notes from mutually followed accounts can also appear for a limited period. Availability, labels and rollout can differ by country, account, age or supervision settings, app version and Instagram testing.
How to open Instagram Map
- Open the Instagram mobile app.
- Tap the Messages or DM icon.
- At the top of the inbox, tap Map.
The feature was announced for U.S. users on August 6, 2025, with broader availability planned afterward. It may not appear on every account, and it is normally a mobile-app feature rather than a browser destination.

How to see friends’ recent locations
- Open Messages → Map.
- Look for profile markers on the map.
- Tap a marker to view the location information Instagram makes available.
A person appears only when they have chosen an audience that includes you. “Friends” means followers whom you also follow back, not every follower. You can view the Map without sharing your own location.
How to share your location
- Open Messages → Map.
- Open the Map’s settings, audience or location-sharing control.
- Choose an audience: Friends, Close Friends, Only selected friends or No one.
- Tap the displayed confirmation button, such as Save or Update.
Instagram may use different wording in different releases. Meta says you can change the audience or turn sharing off at any time.
How to stop sharing your location
- Go to Messages → Map.
- Open the Map sharing settings.
- Select No one or the equivalent stop-sharing option.
- Confirm the change.

- iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Instagram.
- Android: Settings → Location or Apps → Instagram → Permissions → Location.
Removing permission can affect other Instagram location functions, but it does not erase locations already attached to published content.
Map sharing and location tags are separate
Turning off Map sharing does not remove a location tag from a post, Reel, Story or Note. A tagged item can still disclose a place to its audience, and another person’s tag may also identify a location. Review older posts individually if you want to reduce exposure. Use the Map without sharing your own location
You can keep Map sharing off and still explore the feature. Pan or zoom around the map, tap content markers or clusters, and open location-linked Stories, Reels, posts or Notes. This can help you discover events, restaurants and attractions, including places associated with concerts or other activities.

The Map is not a complete local-business directory. Results depend on whether people tagged a place, account visibility, content age, Instagram’s ranking and the location database.
Privacy controls worth checking
- Choose Close Friends or Only selected friends instead of a broad audience.
- Use any version-dependent controls labelled Hide location, Hidden places or Exclude people.
- Be especially careful with home, school, workplace, shelters and regular routes.
- Review location stickers and tags on existing content.
- Do not assume that hiding a place on the Map removes it from a post or Story.
- After changing settings, reopen the audience screen and verify the result.
In August 2025, a multistate group of U.S. attorneys general raised safety and precise-location concerns about the feature. Their letter is available at ag.ny.gov. That concern is a reason to choose a narrow audience, not evidence that every account is exposed in the same way.

Teen and supervised-account considerations
Meta says parents using Instagram supervision can control aspects of a teen’s Map-sharing experience, receive a notification if the teen starts sharing and see whom the teen shares with. Controls may vary by country and release. Discuss what “last active location” means, limit sharing to trusted people known offline, and avoid routine locations such as home and school.

Instagram Map versus Instagram DM live location

- Update Instagram through the official app store.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Log out and back in.
- Confirm you are using the mobile app and checking the top of Messages.
- Consider rollout, country, age, supervision, testing or account-side availability.
- Check location permission if you are trying to share your own location; permission alone will not necessarily make the feature appear.
- Try another network.
- Reinstall only after confirming your password and account-recovery access.
- Use Instagram’s in-app help or reporting flow if the problem remains.
If the Map is empty
An empty map can be normal. It may mean no eligible friends are sharing with you, followed accounts have no recent location-tagged content, Stories or Notes have expired, the map is zoomed away from available content, your mutual-follow network is small, or the feature is unavailable or malfunctioning on the account. It does not prove that your friends are not using Instagram.
Common misunderstandings
“Instagram is showing my location without permission.”
First separate Map sharing from a location tag, sticker, another person’s tag, device permissions and other Instagram location processing. Meta describes Map sharing as opt-in, but turning it off does not disable every location-related feature.

“I turned off location, but a place is still visible.”
A previously published post, Reel, Story or Note may still contain its own location tag. Edit or remove the relevant content where Instagram allows it.
“The marker is wrong.”
It may represent the last time the person was active on Instagram rather than their current position.
“I do not share, but I can still see friends.”
That is expected: viewing the Map and sharing your own location are separate controls.
The Bottom Line
Use Instagram → Messages → Map to view the feature. Keep sharing off unless you have a clear reason, choose the narrowest audience you need, and remember that location tags can reveal places independently of Map sharing.
