Yes—the Disney–OpenAI Sora deal was a real announcement. On December 11, 2025, the companies described a proposed three-year licensing agreement that would let Sora generate short, user-prompted videos using more than 200 selected Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters and related assets. But OpenAI discontinued Sora’s web and app products on April 26, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, readers cannot use Sora as a current way to make Disney-character videos.
What Disney and OpenAI actually announced
Disney and OpenAI announced the arrangement in separate releases on December 11, 2025. Disney described it as a proposed three-year licensing agreement, subject to definitive agreements, corporate and board approvals, and customary closing conditions. That wording announced an agreement framework; it did not by itself prove that every part of the transaction had completed or remained operative after Sora was later shut down.
The planned consumer experience covered two OpenAI products:
- Sora: short videos generated from users’ prompts, using a limited selection of licensed Disney-related intellectual property.
- ChatGPT Images: still-image generation using the same licensed intellectual property.
The companies also described a broader commercial relationship. Disney announced a planned $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI, plus warrants to purchase additional OpenAI equity. That investment was not described as a $1 billion licensing fee. Disney also intended to use OpenAI APIs in its products and Disney+ experiences and to provide ChatGPT access for employees. The companies said selected Sora-generated videos could eventually be curated for display on Disney+.

Disney and OpenAI presented safety, creator-rights and content-owner protections as part of the arrangement. Those were stated commitments, not evidence that every possible misuse or legal question had been resolved.
Which characters and assets were included?
The announced license covered more than 200 selected characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars, along with certain costumes, props, vehicles and iconic environments. Disney executives later emphasized that this was a limited selection, not the company’s entire portfolio.
Examples named in the announcement included:
- Disney animation and live action: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, the Beast, Cinderella, Baymax, Simba and Mufasa.
- Marvel: Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor and Thanos.
- Star Wars: Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, the Mandalorian, Stormtroopers and Yoda.
The examples were not a complete catalog. A character’s association with Disney did not automatically mean it was included, and the agreement concerned selected intellectual-property assets rather than every character Disney owns, distributes or has a commercial relationship with.

What users were supposed to be able to make
Short, prompt-driven videos
The announced use case was fan-created social video: a user would describe a scene and Sora would generate a short clip featuring approved characters and assets. Disney’s chief financial officer later discussed an initial video length of up to 30 seconds. The public materials did not describe permission to produce feature-length films, unrestricted remixes or official Disney productions.

Still images in ChatGPT
OpenAI’s announcement also said ChatGPT Images would support still images using the licensed properties. That was a planned product capability tied to the same arrangement, not a general grant to use Disney characters in any image-generation service.
Possible Disney+ distribution
The Disney+ proposal referred to curated selections of Sora-generated videos. It was not an open upload channel where every user creation would automatically appear. Curation implies editorial, technical and safety review, and Disney executives described the idea partly as a way to increase short-form and mobile engagement.

What the deal explicitly did not include
The announcement expressly excluded talent likenesses and voices. In practical terms, licensing a fictional character did not give users permission to generate an actor’s face, a performer’s voice or an imitation of other talent connected with a film or series.
The public announcement also did not establish broad commercial rights for users. It did not answer whether a creator could monetize a clip, use it in advertising, sell merchandise based on it, or deploy it in a brand campaign. Questions about attribution, watermarks, approval and takedown procedures were likewise not fully specified.
| Question | What the public materials establish |
|---|---|
| Could users make short fan videos? | That was the stated Sora use case, subject to product controls. |
| Could users make full-length films? | Not established; the announcement focused on short-form video. |
| Could users use actor likenesses or voices? | No. Talent likenesses and voices were explicitly excluded. |
| Could users commercially exploit outputs? | Not established by the cited announcement. |
| Was every Disney character included? | No. Disney described a limited selection of more than 200 characters and related assets. |
Why the announcement mattered
A licensing route for generative entertainment
The agreement was notable because a major entertainment company chose a licensing framework for selected generative uses rather than relying only on litigation, takedowns or model restrictions. It offered a high-profile example of an intellectual-property owner trying to control how recognizable characters enter an AI-video product.

A strategic partnership beyond character rights
OpenAI gained a prominent content partner and a large enterprise customer. Disney’s planned investment, API use, employee deployment and Disney+ experimentation made the announcement broader than a simple character-rights transaction.
Limits remained important
The arrangement did not settle the wider legal questions surrounding training data, derivative works, user ownership, commercial exploitation or the rights of actors, voice performers, composers, writers and other creators. Disney’s permission to license selected assets to OpenAI was a separate question from OpenAI’s model rights and from whatever rights an end user might have in an output.

Did the Disney-character feature ever launch?
The companies said they expected the feature to begin in early 2026, and Disney was still discussing the Disney+ plan in February and March. The available primary materials do not establish a durable, broadly available public rollout before Sora’s discontinuation. It is therefore more accurate to describe the capability as announced and planned than to claim that ordinary users definitely received sustained access.

Nor should the shutdown be presented as proof that the licensing contract was formally canceled. The verified fact is that the consumer Sora web and app products ended. The public materials cited here do not establish whether the underlying agreement was terminated, amended, completed in another form or otherwise unwound.
What the deal means now
As of August 18, 2026, Sora’s web and app products are no longer available, so readers should not be directed to Sora as a working way to generate Disney, Marvel, Pixar or Star Wars videos. The API was still scheduled to end on September 24, 2026.
The announcement remains significant as a media-business case study: a major studio tested a licensed path for fan-facing generative content while pairing it with an investment and enterprise-technology relationship. Its practical consumer promise, however, was overtaken by the shutdown of the product that was supposed to deliver it.
General AI-video services may still operate, but none should be presented as inheriting Disney’s OpenAI license. A tool’s ability to generate a similar-looking character, or its marketing claim that it offers “official Disney Sora access,” is not evidence of authorization. Users must separately examine the service’s content policy, commercial-use terms and rights for any characters they intend to depict.
