Cross is Prime Video’s adaptation of James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels, with Aldis Hodge playing the Washington, D.C., homicide detective and forensic psychologist. Two seasons are available, and Amazon has renewed the series for an eight-episode third season.
What is Cross about?
Cross follows Alex Cross, a Washington, D.C., homicide detective who also applies criminal-psychology expertise to his investigations. Aldis Hodge leads the series as Cross, whose cases affect both his professional judgment and his family life.
The James Patterson connection
The series adapts characters from James Patterson’s bestselling Alex Cross novels. It is not a separate original detective concept: the Prime Video drama uses Patterson’s central character while building a serialized television story around him, his colleagues and his family.
The central partnership
Cross works with Detective John Sampson, a relationship that anchors the police investigations. The show’s premise combines homicide procedure with behavioral analysis, allowing Cross to pursue killers through both evidence and an understanding of criminal psychology.

The themes Aldis Hodge brings to the role
Hodge, who is also an executive producer, said he wanted the series to explore “Black individuality, Black fatherhood, and Black mental health.” Those aims help explain why Cross gives substantial attention to the detective’s life outside the case, rather than treating his family and emotional history as background decoration.
How to assess Cross as a detective adaptation
Viewers comparing the series with other adaptations of crime novels can use several specific questions:
Quick Recap
- Fidelity to Patterson’s books: How closely the television characterization and story structure follow the Alex Cross novels.

- Season structure: Whether the serialized cases and release pattern suit viewers who prefer a complete drop or weekly episodes.
- Streaming access: Prime Video is the exclusive home for both released seasons, while Season 3 is planned for distribution in more than 240 countries and territories.
