Hulu is primarily an on-demand streaming service. Hulu + Live TV includes that Hulu library plus 100+ live channels, participating local stations, sports, news, a channel guide, and unlimited cloud DVR. The right choice depends on whether you regularly need live programming, local channels, or recording—not simply on how much content each plan lists.

What regular Hulu includes
Hulu’s standard service is a streaming library rather than a channel grid. Its catalog includes Hulu Originals, full seasons of selected series, current-season episodes from participating networks, movies, and kids and family programming. Hulu also supports multiple profiles and viewing on supported devices; selected plans and devices allow downloads.
Some regular Hulu pages show a “Live & Upcoming” collection, but individual live events or program-specific streams do not turn the service into a general live-TV replacement. The collection is separate from the full Live TV package: Hulu Live & Upcoming.

What Hulu + Live TV adds
A live channel lineup
Hulu advertises more than 100 live channels, including examples such as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, NFL Network, FS1, FS2, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC/MS NOW, FX, FXX, Freeform, TNT, TBS, USA, Discovery, HGTV, Food Network, TLC and Disney Channel. The exact lineup changes by market, rights agreement, device and plan.
Local stations
Participating local ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC affiliates are available only in eligible markets. Before subscribing, enter your ZIP code in Hulu’s channel checker. A national channel list cannot guarantee that your local affiliate—or PBS, CW or another station—is included.
Disney+ and ESPN access
The currently advertised Live TV package includes Disney+ with ads and ESPN Select, with additional ESPN content associated with the plan. These services may open in their own apps, so their logins, interfaces and device or stream rules are not necessarily identical to Hulu’s.

Ads: what “Premium” does—and does not—remove
Hulu with ads includes commercial interruptions in its on-demand library. Premium is intended to remove ads from much of the Hulu streaming library, although rights restrictions can leave a short break before or after some titles. It does not make live channels commercial-free: broadcast and cable feeds retain their normal ad breaks, and live-TV video on demand can also contain ads. Hulu describes these terms on its Live TV page.

Sports and news are not the same as every game
Hulu + Live TV carries sports and news networks and advertises programming connected with the NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA sports and other competitions. Channel access does not guarantee every game. Local-market rights, regional blackouts, national exclusivity, league restrictions and the availability of a local affiliate can all prevent a particular event from streaming.
- A network being in the lineup does not guarantee its local station is available in your ZIP code.
- A station being available does not eliminate regional or league blackouts.
- Some leagues or events require a separate premium subscription or add-on.
DVR and simultaneous streams
Unlimited DVR
Live TV includes Unlimited DVR at no additional cost. You can record multiple programs at once and fast-forward through recorded content, but recordings are kept for up to nine months—not permanently. Premium networks can impose recording restrictions; Hulu’s HBO information is at hulu.com/hbomax.

The standard Live TV subscription supports two simultaneous screens. Hulu’s Unlimited Screens add-on allows unlimited screens at home and three while away, subject to premium-network and other terms. Separately accessed Disney+ or ESPN apps may apply their own limits.

Can Hulu + Live TV replace cable?
For many households, it can replace much of a cable package: you get a live guide, local stations where available, sports and news networks, and cloud recording without a set-top-box rental or installation appointment. It is still internet television, not cable. You need high-speed broadband, and streaming latency, data caps, blackouts, channel disputes and lineup changes remain possible. Hulu says it does not charge its own equipment-rental, installation, broadcast-TV or regional-sports fees, but programming restrictions still apply.
Which plan should you choose?
Choose regular Hulu when
- You mainly watch series, movies and Originals on demand.
- You do not need a live channel guide or regular live news and sports.
- You already receive local stations with an antenna or another service.
- You want the lower monthly bill or an on-demand Disney+/Hulu bundle.
- You are comfortable waiting for many shows to arrive on demand.
Choose Hulu + Live TV when
- You watch live sports or national news frequently.
- You need local ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC stations and they are available at your address.
- You want to record live programming.
- You are replacing cable and will use a channel-grid experience often enough to justify the higher price.
- You value the included Disney+ and ESPN access.
Compare another service when
- You need one specific regional sports network or league package Hulu does not carry.
- Your preferred local station is missing.
- You want a cheaper, smaller live-TV lineup or more simultaneous viewers.
- Your broadband connection is unreliable or data-capped.
- You strongly dislike unavoidable live-TV advertising.
Pre-subscription checklist
- Enter your ZIP code and confirm every required local station.
- List the sports networks and specific events you watch, then check blackout and local-rights rules.
- Compare the recurring price—not only a limited promotion—with taxes and any add-ons.
- Decide whether two simultaneous screens are enough.
- Check that your televisions and streaming devices are supported; Hulu’s examples include Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, select LG and Samsung TVs, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, phones, tablets and web browsers.
- Remember that Disney+ and ESPN content may require separate apps.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Hulu for affordable on-demand entertainment. Choose Hulu + Live TV only if you will use its live channels, sports, news, local stations or DVR regularly—and verify the ZIP-code lineup before paying.
