This removes offline copies from that device; it is intended to leave your Spotify library, saved albums and playlists intact. Use the individual download control instead if you want to keep some items offline.
Remove all Spotify downloads on iPhone or Android
- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Open Data-saving and offline.
- Under Storage, tap Remove all downloads.
Spotify documents this dedicated all-downloads command for mobile devices at its offline-listening support page. It removes music, podcast and other eligible offline content stored on the current device. You can download the items again later, but they will need to be downloaded again.
Spotify’s menus can differ slightly by country, operating system and app version. The current path is the one above; if a label is different, look for the Storage section inside Data-saving and offline.
Remove one playlist, album or podcast
Use this method when you want to preserve a small travel or commute collection while reclaiming space elsewhere.

- Open Your Library. On mobile, choose the Downloaded filter if it is available.
- Open the downloaded playlist, album or podcast.
- Tap the green downloaded-arrow button.
- Choose Remove when Spotify presents the option.
On some app builds, tapping the green arrow simply switches the item from downloaded to not downloaded. The control removes the offline copy, not the normal streaming item. Spotify’s separate download and library controls mean this action is intended to leave the song, album or playlist available in your account; do not use Remove from library, Unsave or Delete playlist if your goal is only to free storage.
Delete Spotify downloads on Mac or Windows
Spotify’s official mobile documentation does not describe an identical desktop Remove all downloads button. On the desktop app, remove offline copies item by item:
- Open Spotify and go to Your Library.
- Identify playlists or albums showing the downloaded status.
- Open each item and click its green downloaded-arrow icon to turn downloading off.
- Repeat for other downloaded playlists, albums or podcasts.
This desktop workflow is also described in Spotify Community guidance. If you need a complete reset and do not mind signing in and downloading content again, uninstall and reinstall Spotify using Spotify’s reinstall instructions.
Downloads and cache are different
Downloads are content you deliberately saved for offline listening. The cache is temporary or partially stored playback data used to reduce buffering. Spotify lists them as separate storage categories, so clearing the cache is not a substitute for removing an offline library, and removing downloads may still leave cache or other app data behind. Clear the cache on mobile
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Data-saving and offline.
- Under Storage, tap Clear next to Clear cache.
Clear the cache on desktop
- Click your profile picture and select Settings.
- Scroll to Storage.
- Click Clear cache.
Desktop Spotify also provides a setting to change the cache location. Clearing cache is the better first choice when temporary data is unusually large or playback appears corrupted but you want to retain intentional downloads.
Why Spotify still uses storage after downloads are removed
- The cache, settings or other app data remains.
- The operating system has not recalculated the app’s size yet.
- A failed or incomplete download left temporary data.
- You are viewing total Spotify app storage rather than offline-media storage.
- Downloads remain on another device.
- On Android, downloaded content may be stored on an accessible SD card instead of internal storage.
Removing downloads will not reduce Spotify’s footprint to zero: the app and its local data still require space. Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory. On compatible Android devices, the SD-card storage option appears only when Spotify detects an accessible card; Spotify recommends at least 1 GB free on that card (storage information).
If Spotify downloads will not delete
- Confirm that the app is online, then update Spotify.
- Close and reopen Spotify.
- Restart the phone or computer.
- Try Remove all downloads on mobile, or turn off downloaded status on each desktop item.
- Clear Spotify’s cache.
- Check the device’s storage screen again after a restart.
- Uninstall and reinstall Spotify if storage remains clearly abnormal or controls are missing.
Spotify warns that reinstalling removes local app data and means all downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again (reinstall guidance). On Android, the operating system’s Clear storage or Clear data command is another broad reset; it can sign you out and reset settings. Follow Spotify’s clean-reinstall steps rather than deleting random folders.
When the old device is inaccessible
The reliable way to erase local downloads is to open Spotify on that device and use its own removal control. Account-level device management is not necessarily the same as deleting files already stored locally, and signing out everywhere should not be treated as a guaranteed remote wipe. If an old device is consuming an offline-device slot or you cannot access it, contact Spotify Support; Spotify Community guidance discusses this situation.

Important download limits and eligibility
- Spotify states that Premium supports offline downloads of albums, playlists and podcasts; free accounts can download podcasts, while music downloads require Premium (offline listening).
- Spotify documents up to 10,000 tracks per device on up to five devices.
- The app must connect online at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active.
- If the five-device limit is exceeded, Spotify may remove downloads from the least recently used device.
- Audiobook offline availability depends on plan and market; Spotify’s U.S. Premium page describes offline downloads that include audiobooks: Spotify Premium offline downloads.
iPhone storage and Android storage notes
iPhone
Spotify downloads on iPhone are stored in encrypted app storage, so you should not expect ordinary song files in the Files app. Use Spotify’s removal control, cache command or, as a last resort, a reinstall.
Android
If Spotify detects a usable external SD card, it may offer a storage-location setting. If the card is unavailable, the option will not appear. Clearing app storage from Android settings removes local data but can sign you out and reset the app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will removing Spotify downloads delete my playlists?
The download-removal control is intended to remove the device’s offline copy, not delete the playlist or unsave it from your Spotify account. Do not choose Delete playlist or Remove from library when you only want to free storage.
Can I remove all downloads at once?
Yes on mobile: Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Storage → Remove all downloads. Spotify does not document the same single desktop control; desktop users generally turn off downloads on each item.

Why can’t I find Spotify songs in the Files app on iPhone?
Spotify stores iPhone downloads in encrypted app storage, not as ordinary music files exposed in Files.
