Panels is the best overall reader for personal CBZ, CBR, PDF and EPUB files across iPhone, iPad and Mac. Chunky Comic Reader is a strong low-cost choice if you use only an iPad. For subscription catalogs, choose Marvel Unlimited for Marvel, DC Universe Infinite for DC, GlobalComix for a broad mix of publishers and manga, or Hoopla if your library participates.
The key distinction is content model: file readers open comics you already have, while subscription and library apps supply licensed content. A reader cannot use Panels or Chunky to open a comic locked inside Marvel Unlimited, DC Universe Infinite, Kindle or another DRM storefront.

1. Panels: best overall for a personal collection
Panels is the strongest general-purpose choice when you control the files. Its current App Store listing supports CBR, CBZ, CB7, PDF, comic EPUB and image formats including WebP. It runs on iPhone and iPad, with Mac support, and advertises iCloud Drive, OPDS catalogs and reading-progress synchronization across Apple devices.
Its library tools include folders, colors, logos and cover images, making a large collection easier to browse. Panel-by-panel and other reading formats can make pages more usable on an iPhone; switch to full-page mode for splash pages and double-page artwork so the intended composition is not cropped.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Firm Support for Hands-Free Viewing】Gooseneck tablet holder built with a firm reinforced aluminum arm, significantly minimizing wobbling and sagging. This tablet holder helps keep your screen at a comfortable viewing angle for reading, streaming and video calls. The arm is intentionally stiff for support—use both hands when bending it
- 【Ultra-Stable Clamp for Firm Surfaces】 Attach the tablet stand to a solid bed headboard, desk or table edge from 0.2–3" (0.5–8 cm) thick. EVA non-slip pads improve grip and help protect furniture, while TPE pads cushion your device inside the holder
- 【Fits 4.7–13" Tablets & Device】 The bed tablet holder compatible with a wide range of iPad Pro/Air/Mini, Galaxy Tab, Kindle, Fire HD, Switch and device. For a secure grip, device thickness should not exceed 0.78" (2 cm); bulky protective cases may need to be removed before mounting
- 【30-Inch Reach & 360° Viewing】 The flexible arm measures about 30 inches when fully extended, giving you room to position the screen where it is comfortable to see. Rotate the holder 360° for portrait or landscape viewing—ideal for reading in bed, watching videos, video calls, recipes and other hands-free viewing
- 【Use It the Right Way】 Gooseneck tablet stand holder may move slightly when you tap or swipe the screen. For better stability with a larger or heavier tablet, bend the arm into an “S” or loop shape instead of keeping it fully extended. Best suited for hands-free reading, movies and video calls rather than frequent typing, drawing or repeated screen interaction
Import and ownership
- Bring files in through Files, iCloud Drive or an OPDS server; other transfer methods depend on your setup and the current app version.
- Imported files remain under your control and can be backed up independently.
- The Panels Store advertises DRM-free comics that can be kept, read offline and backed up. That claim applies to the store’s qualifying purchases, not to subscription comics generally.
Choose Panels if
- You have CBZ, CBR, CB7, PDF or comic EPUB files.
- You want one library on iPhone, iPad and Mac with stated progress sync.
- You value portable or DRM-free purchases.
Skip Panels if
You mainly want a publisher’s current or back catalog. Panels is a reader and store, not a replacement for Marvel Unlimited or DC Universe Infinite.
2. Chunky Comic Reader: best value for iPad-only file reading
Chunky Comic Reader is designed for iPad; its current App Store compatibility information explicitly says there is no iPhone version. It supports CBZ, CBR, CBT and PDF, understands ComicRack and ComicBookLover tags, and offers single-page, two-page and right-to-left modes.
It can import from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box and other services. The Pro upgrade, shown as $3.99 in the U.S. App Store listing, adds computer shares, FTP/SFTP, ComicStreamer, Calibre, Ubooquity and web/WebDAV-related features. The listing also contains dated release notes, so do not infer current development or modern cross-device synchronization from those notes alone.
Chunky is a particularly sensible choice for an iPad kept beside a NAS or cloud library. It is not suitable for an iPhone-and-iPad workflow, and it is not a subscription catalog.

Marvel Unlimited
Marvel describes Unlimited as offering more than 30,000 issues. That is Marvel’s current service description and can change. It requires a Marvel account, supports iPhone and iPad, and advertises offline reading on supported devices. It does not import your personal CBZ or CBR files, and downloaded issues are not permanent ownership.

DC Universe Infinite
DC’s current site presents regular latest releases, Ultra latest releases, free-to-read titles and DC GO, a dynamic vertical-scrolling format designed for mobile screens. Membership tiers, prices, release windows and exact title access change, so verify the current U.S. membership page before subscribing.
4. GlobalComix: broadest multi-publisher and manga mix
GlobalComix combines subscription discovery with individual book unlocks. Its App Store listing claims more than 100,000 comics and manga, including material from Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Kodansha and independent creators. Availability is title-specific rather than a guarantee that every publisher’s complete library is included.
Gold supports offline reading and offers vertical scroll, traditional pages, double-page layouts and panel-to-panel reading for many titles. This makes it useful for manga, manhwa, webtoons and conventional comics in one app. A U.S. App Store snapshot seen in August 2026 listed Gold at $6.99 monthly or $69 annually, with individual unlocks from $0.99 upward; prices vary by storefront, tax and date.
Choose GlobalComix when publisher breadth and discovery matter more than having the complete, earliest catalog from one company.
5. Hoopla: the best no-subscription-cost option with a library card
Hoopla lets patrons of participating public libraries borrow comics, manga, ebooks, audiobooks and other media. A library card is required, and there is no separate consumer subscription charge for the patron. Hoopla’s catalog is local: two library systems can offer very different series and monthly limits. Search your own library’s Hoopla catalog before assuming a particular title is available.
How to choose by collection and device
- You own CBZ, CBR or PDF files: Choose Panels; choose Chunky instead when you use only an iPad and want its server-import tools.
- You mainly read Marvel: Marvel Unlimited.
- You mainly read DC: DC Universe Infinite.
- You want Marvel, DC, Image, indie comics and manga together: GlobalComix, while checking whether each title is included or separately unlocked.
- You want free borrowing: Hoopla, if your library participates.
- You need permanent, portable files: Use a file reader with files you own or qualifying DRM-free purchases; subscriptions and library loans are access licenses.
Reading features that matter on iPhone and iPad
Phone versus tablet
On iPhone, panel-by-panel navigation, smart cropping, quick zoom and a reliable resume position matter because full pages are smaller. On iPad, full-page display, landscape mode, two-page spreads and large-library management are more important.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Manga and right-to-left reading
Panels supports manga and multiple reading directions; Chunky supports right-to-left reading but is iPad-only. GlobalComix includes manga, manhwa, webtoons and vertical originals. A file reader can display a manga file, but it does not provide licensed access to commercial manga by itself.
Spreads and guided view
Guided or panel reading can improve phone readability but may crop or reorder a page’s design. Use full-page or single-page mode for splash pages and double-page spreads, and check that a two-page layout is not shrinking important lettering.
Importing a comic file safely
- Save the CBZ, CBR or PDF in Files, iCloud Drive or a supported cloud service.
- Use the iOS Share sheet or the reader’s import command to send it to Panels or Chunky.
- Confirm that the book appears in the library and that its series and cover metadata look correct.
- Download it locally if the app treats cloud files as on-demand.
- Test one large file, one spread and one CBR before moving your entire collection.
If an import fails
- Download the file again and check whether the archive is corrupt or password-protected.
- Convert CBR to CBZ on a computer when you control the files; CBZ is a ZIP-based archive, while CBR conventionally uses a RAR archive, and app behavior can differ.
- Remove unusual nested folders or unsupported filenames.
- Do not rename an extension unless you know the underlying archive format.
Offline reading, syncing and ownership
Offline support has different meanings. Personal files can generally be read offline after import or download. Marvel advertises mobile offline downloads, GlobalComix includes offline reading with Gold, and Hoopla allows most titles to be downloaded under its lending rules. None of those subscription or loan downloads should be treated as permanent ownership.

Cloud storage and reading-progress synchronization are separate features. Panels explicitly advertises progress sync across iPhone, iPad and Mac. Do not assume that putting a file in iCloud, Dropbox or another cloud service will synchronize your page position in every reader. The current Chunky listing documents extensive importing but does not establish modern cross-device progress sync.
