Spotify Lossless is here: how to turn it on and make sure you’re hearing it

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spotify Lossless is now available to eligible Premium subscribers in supported markets. Open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Media quality, choose Lossless for Wi‑Fi, cellular, and downloads as needed, then look for the Lossless badge while a music track plays. For an uncompressed path, use wired headphones, a DAC or amplifier, or a compatible Spotify Connect device; ordinary Bluetooth compresses the final signal.

Spotify Lossless is available now

Spotify announced the initial rollout on September 10, 2025, and said on October 6 that availability had expanded to more than 50 markets. In 2026 it is an established feature, not a new “coming soon” service, but access still depends on an eligible Premium plan, country, app version, device and, for third-party hardware, rollout and firmware support. Check the app and current Spotify support information rather than assuming every country or device is included.

Spotify advertises Lossless at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. “Up to” is important: the available resolution depends on the recording and playback setup, and a larger number does not guarantee a better master or an audible improvement. Lossless is not offered for music videos, podcasts or audiobooks, and loudness normalization still applies.

Spotify’s launch announcement and eligibility details are documented by Spotify Newsroom and Spotify Support.

Who gets Lossless?

Lossless is for eligible Premium music plans; Free accounts do not receive it. Spotify uses the word “eligible,” so confirm your account and market if the option is missing. In the United States, Spotify’s current Premium page presents Lossless as a Premium benefit rather than a separate HiFi add-on.

Turn on Lossless on a phone or tablet

  1. Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
  2. Choose Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Media quality.
  4. Set Wi‑Fi streaming quality to Lossless.
  5. If you want it on mobile data, set Cellular streaming quality to Lossless too.
  6. For offline files, set Download quality to Lossless.
  7. Play a music track and check the Now Playing screen for the Lossless label.

These are separate controls. Changing Wi‑Fi quality does not automatically change cellular streaming or downloads. After changing download quality, delete existing offline copies and download them again so they are created with the new setting.

Enable it in the desktop app

  1. Select your profile picture.
  2. Open Settings and privacy.
  3. Select Media quality.
  4. Choose Lossless for the connection or download option shown.
  5. Start a music track and verify the Lossless indicator.

Spotify’s current support documentation lists mobile app version 9.0.58 or later and desktop app version 1.2.67 or later; version requirements can change, so update the app if the menu is absent. Windows users may also encounter an advanced Exclusive Mode feature intended to stop the Windows mixer from resampling before an external DAC. It is separate from enabling Lossless and is not required for ordinary listening. See the reported context at Tom’s Guide without treating it as a universal prerequisite.

Use Lossless with Spotify Connect

  1. Start a song.
  2. Tap or select the device icon.
  3. Choose the compatible speaker, receiver or other Spotify Connect device.
  4. Open Change quality settings, the device’s Connect settings, or its File Quality card.
  5. Select Lossless and confirm the playback view shows it.

General Spotify support does not guarantee Lossless support. Update the hardware firmware and check the device maker’s compatibility information. Spotify’s setup guidance is at Spotify Connect Lossless and Spotify’s audio-quality support page. Spotify initially named products from Sony, Bose, Samsung and Sennheiser, with additional brands such as Sonos and Amazon scheduled for support; those original lists are not a complete 2026 compatibility guarantee.

Bluetooth is the main limitation

Spotify says ordinary Bluetooth does not provide enough bandwidth to preserve its Lossless stream, so the signal is compressed before it reaches Bluetooth headphones or speakers. The app may show Lossless at the source, but the final wireless link is not uncompressed. Use wired headphones or earphones, a wired amplifier or DAC, or a compatible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect path when preserving the Lossless chain matters.

How to verify that playback is really Lossless

  • Confirm the signed-in account has an eligible Premium plan.
  • Update Spotify and select Lossless for the specific connection type you are using.
  • Play a music track, not a podcast, audiobook or music video.
  • Look for the Lossless label in Now Playing or the playback bar.
  • On Spotify Connect, inspect the connected device’s quality setting or File Quality card.
  • Remember that Bluetooth can compress the final transmission even when the source indicator says Lossless.

Data, downloads and buffering

Lossless files are larger and may take longer to start. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection. Secondary reporting has observed cellular use of up to approximately 1 GB per hour, but that is an approximate warning rather than a universal Spotify guarantee. On a metered plan, leave cellular quality below Lossless, use Wi‑Fi, or download albums and playlists over Wi‑Fi. If playback glitches, lower the quality, move to a stronger network, download for offline use, and check the device firmware.

When buying hardware is—and is not—worthwhile

Lossless is a sensible upgrade when

  • You listen through wired headphones, a stereo, an external DAC or a compatible Connect device.
  • Your Wi‑Fi or mobile allowance can handle larger streams.
  • You want Spotify’s highest available technical quality and have storage for larger downloads.

Keep your current setup when

  • You use Bluetooth earbuds exclusively.
  • Your data allowance or network is limited.
  • Your speakers or headphones cannot reveal additional detail.
  • You mainly listen to podcasts, audiobooks or videos.
  • You expect every recording to become dramatically louder or different.

Spotify notes that audible results vary with the master, hardware, connection and listener. A DAC or expensive headphones are optional, not requirements for turning on the feature.

Troubleshooting missing or ineffective Lossless

The Lossless option is missing

  1. Update the mobile or desktop app.
  2. Check the exact account and Premium plan currently signed in.
  3. Try enabling it on a phone or desktop before testing third-party hardware.
  4. Connect to the external device, then open its quality settings.
  5. Update the device firmware and try another music album.
  6. If the setting still does not appear, contact Spotify Support; there is no universal reinstall fix.

The badge appears but the sound is Bluetooth

The source may be Lossless while Bluetooth compresses the final link. Switch to a wired output or compatible Connect device to preserve more of the path.

Existing downloads remain unchanged

Set Download quality to Lossless, remove the old offline files, and download them again. Streaming and download settings are independent.

A smart speaker supports Spotify but not Lossless

Basic Spotify compatibility is not the same as Lossless compatibility. The device needs a supported Lossless integration, generally through Spotify Connect or a specifically documented implementation.

Bottom line: should you enable it?

Enable Lossless if you have an eligible Premium plan, reliable Wi‑Fi, and wired or compatible Connect playback. Leave cellular quality lower if data is limited. If you listen only over Bluetooth, the setting can still provide a better source stream, but Bluetooth will compress what reaches your ears. The Lossless badge is the practical test; a dramatic audible difference is not guaranteed.
