Netflix’s ad-free Basic plan is not newly disappearing in 2026. Netflix phased it out for U.S. and French customers during the third quarter of 2024, after earlier changes in Canada and the United Kingdom. The practical question now is which plan replaces it—and whether that means accepting commercials, paying more, or canceling.
Netflix has not established that Basic was its most popular plan. What is clear is that it was the company’s cheapest ad-free option, and longtime subscribers may still encounter its removal through an account notice, billing change, or bundled subscription.

Which Netflix plan was retired?
The discontinued tier was Basic: an ad-free plan that historically allowed one simultaneous stream at lower video quality than Standard or Premium. It was not Standard with ads, Netflix’s current low-cost plan, and Netflix has not eliminated its entire budget offering.
Netflix described the change as a staged phase-out of Basic in markets where its advertising plan is available. The company first stopped offering Basic to many new and returning customers, then began removing it for existing members. Its third-quarter 2024 shareholder letter says Basic had been phased out in the United States and France during that quarter, with Brazil expected to follow later in Q4.

The phase-out timeline
- July 2023: Netflix said new and returning customers in Canada and the U.K. could no longer select ad-free Basic, while existing members were initially unaffected (Netflix Q2 2023 letter).
- January 2024: Netflix said it planned to retire Basic in additional advertising markets (Netflix Q4 2023 letter).
- July 2024: Netflix announced the next phase for the U.S. and France (Netflix Q2 2024 letter).
- October 17, 2024: Netflix confirmed the U.S. and French phase-out had occurred in Q3.
Therefore, an August or September 2026 article should treat the U.S. change as an implemented policy, not a breaking-news announcement. Plan names, prices, taxes and availability can differ elsewhere; Netflix says it may test or change plans by country (2026 SEC filing).
What are the current U.S. replacement plans?
The following U.S. prices reflect reported list prices after the March 26, 2026 increase. Netflix’s live account page is the final authority because taxes, billing partners, packages and later price changes can alter the amount charged.

| Plan | Monthly price | Ads | Video quality | Simultaneous streams | Downloads | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | Yes | 1080p | 2 | Yes | Lowest current price |
| Standard | $19.99 | No | 1080p | 2 | Yes | Ad-free two-person viewing |
| Premium | $26.99 | No | 4K/UHD where available | 4 | Yes | 4K and more simultaneous viewers |
Netflix’s official Standard with ads page confirms the $8.99 U.S. price, 1080p playback, two devices and downloads. The $19.99 Standard and $26.99 Premium figures were reported by Tom’s Guide; check your account before switching.
Standard with ads
This is the least expensive current U.S. plan. Netflix says viewers can expect a few short ads per hour, with frequency and placement varying by title and session. Some programs may be unavailable because of licensing agreements; Netflix marks unavailable titles with a lock icon. Older televisions and streaming devices may not support the plan. Kids profiles do not show ads, according to Netflix’s plan page.

Standard
Standard preserves ad-free viewing, 1080p quality, two simultaneous streams and downloads. At the reported prices, it costs $11 more each month than Standard with ads—$132 more per year before tax.
Premium
Premium adds 4K/UHD where the title and equipment support it and allows up to four simultaneous streams. It costs a reported $7 more per month than Standard, or $84 more per year before tax. Extra-member and household rules still apply.

What happens to an existing Basic account?
There is no single automatic outcome for every customer. Country, billing date, direct versus partner billing, promotional or grandfathered terms, and whether you change or cancel the account can all matter.
Affected members were notified and generally had to select an available replacement to continue under the new lineup. Do not assume Netflix will universally move you to Standard with ads, or to any other plan. The notice attached to your account controls the deadline and outcome.

Customers billed through a mobile carrier, internet provider, app store or bundle may receive different instructions and may have to make the change through that provider. Netflix says members can change plans or cancel, while partner-billed accounts can be subject to partner procedures (Netflix Help Center).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which plan should you choose?
Choose Standard with ads when
- The monthly bill matters more than uninterrupted viewing.
- You accept commercials and 1080p is sufficient.
- Two simultaneous streams meet your household’s needs.
- You have compatible devices and can live with possible title exclusions.
Choose Standard when
- You want ad-free viewing without paying for 4K.
- Two streams and 1080p are enough.
- The $11 monthly premium over the ads plan is worthwhile to you.
Choose Premium when
- You need up to four concurrent streams.
- You own a compatible 4K/UHD television and value higher resolution.
- The additional $7 per month over reported Standard pricing fits the household budget.
Cancel when
- Your main show has ended or the catalog no longer justifies the bill.
- Commercials or the new price remove the value of the service.
- You prefer rotating subscriptions and using free services between paid months.
Netflix’s normal direct-billing policy leaves access active through the end of the current billing period after cancellation (Netflix Help Center). Free ad-supported services such as Tubi, Pluto TV and YouTube can reduce costs, but they are not replacements for Netflix’s catalog.
How to check and change your plan
- Sign in to Netflix and open the account or membership-management area.
- Record the plan name and current monthly charge.
- Review Netflix email and in-app notices for a deadline or effective billing date.
- Open the account’s Change Plan flow and compare the plans actually offered to you.
- Check ad tolerance, resolution, simultaneous viewers, downloads, device compatibility and any locked titles before selecting a plan.
- Review the new amount and effective date, then confirm the change.
- If a carrier, app store or bundle bills you, follow that provider’s instructions instead.
- If none of the plans works for you, use Netflix’s cancellation flow and verify the end-of-access date.
Important exceptions before you switch
- Taxes and billing arrangements: Displayed list prices may not be the final charge. Bundles and partners can set different amounts or dates.
- Catalog availability: Standard with ads may omit some licensed titles; look for lock icons before assuming the full catalog is included.
- Device support: Some older televisions and streaming devices do not support the ads plan.
- Downloads: Standard with ads currently includes downloads, but confirm the feature and device limits in your account because plan features can change.
- Price notices: Netflix says it generally emails members about a price change about one month before the affected billing date (Netflix Help Center).
Why Netflix removed Basic
Netflix’s stated strategy has two parts: an ads tier supplies a lower entry price, and advertising adds a second revenue stream. Netflix said the ads plan represented more than 45% of sign-ups in advertising markets in Q2 2024, more than 50% in Q3 2024, and more than 60% in Q1 2026 (Netflix Q1 2026 letter).
Executives have also said each plan should justify its place in the lineup while Netflix expands advertising and reduces unnecessary complexity (Q3 2024 earnings call). It is reasonable to view the change as pressure toward newer or more expensive choices, but that is consumer interpretation rather than Netflix’s sole stated explanation.
Bottom line for U.S. subscribers
Ad-free Basic is already gone from the normal U.S. lineup. The decision facing a former Basic customer is now straightforward: pay $8.99 for Standard with ads and accept commercials and possible title restrictions; pay the reported $19.99 for ad-free Standard; pay the reported $26.99 for Premium and gain 4K and four streams; or cancel. Check the notice and live account page before acting, especially if another company bills your Netflix account.
