What Happened to Howard Stern’s Former Staffers? A Documented Timeline

There is no single answer to what happened to Howard Stern’s former staffers. Over four decades, some left for comedy, writing or other broadcasting; others were part of documented layoffs; and for several, reliable current career information is limited. The clearest record is a timeline of their roles and departures, followed by the few post-show projects that are publicly established.

Why so many former staffers remain a subject of interest

The Howard Stern Show reached more than 20 million listeners at its peak and was syndicated in 60 markets, according to the Associated Press in 2025. That scale made the people around Stern recognizable in their own right. When a familiar voice disappeared, listeners noticed.

The program also changed repeatedly as it moved through different eras. A departure could mean a career move, a contract ending, a staff reduction or simply a person becoming less visible in entertainment coverage. “Former staffer” is therefore a broad category, not a description of one common outcome.

The documented departure timeline

Staffer Role on the show Last documented period Exit type Post-show documentation
Billy West Impressionist and in-studio performer November 1995 Not stated The role and end date are established; a complete current-career profile is not.
Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling Head writer and in-studio comedian March 2001 Not stated The departure marks the end of the show’s original joke-writer era; a current profile is not established here.
Artie Lange Comedian and on-air personality 2009 Not stated Later work includes a book and a radio program that ended in April 2014.
John “Stuttering John” Melendez Intern, call screener, writer, celebrity interviewer and producer March 2004 Not stated The record establishes his many show roles and end date, but not a complete current employment picture.
Scott “The Engineer” Salem Engineer and technical staff member January 2019 Not stated No comprehensive current-career account is established here.
Shuli Egar Writer and on-air staffer January 2021 Left in early 2021, after earlier staff releases were reported The departure is documented; later employment details are limited.
Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate Executive producer No departure documented in the supplied record Continued association with the show is documented He remained a visible Stern figure and published a memoir.
Benjy Bronk, Jon Blitt, Memet Walker and Mike Trainor Show staffers July 14, 2026 Layoffs affecting around a dozen employees The layoff report identifies the employees; individual next steps are not established.

What is known about the best-documented post-show paths?

Artie Lange: books and a later radio show

Lange’s post-Stern record includes Wanna Bet, his book, and The Artie Lange Show. The latter was canceled in April 2014. Those are firm career milestones; they do not, by themselves, establish a full account of his later work or personal life.

Gary Dell’Abate: the producer who remained visible

Dell’Abate is the clearest example of a longtime staff member who remained publicly connected to Stern. He continued to be identified as the show’s executive producer and published They Call Me Baba Booey, a memoir covered by the official Stern site in 2020.

Jackie Martling: the end of the original joke-writer era

Martling was both head writer and an in-studio comedian. His exit closed the period in which a dedicated joke writer was central to the show’s daily comedy. The available record does not establish a complete, current account of his work, so it would be misleading to fill that gap with speculation.

Billy West: an early-era departure with limited current detail

West’s documented Stern role was as an impressionist and in-studio performer. The record establishes that his run ended in November 1995, but it does not provide a sufficiently complete current-career profile for a definitive “where is he now?” account.

John Melendez: a career built through many show roles

Melendez’s path on the program covered far more than one job: he was an intern, call screener, writer, celebrity interviewer and producer. His documented run ended in March 2004. Beyond those roles, a comprehensive current employment record is not established here.

Rank #3

Scott Salem and Shuli Egar: later-era departures

Salem’s documented run continued through January 2019. Egar’s ended in January 2021, with a Howard 100 News summary describing his departure in early 2021 after earlier staff releases. The available accounts identify when they left but do not support a detailed, authoritative narrative of their present employers or personal circumstances.

What happened in the 2026 staff layoffs?

The Daily Beast reported that around a dozen employees were laid off on July 14, 2026. The named staffers included Benjy Bronk, Jon Blitt, Memet Walker and Mike Trainor. These exits are different from older departures because they were reported as part of a workforce reduction rather than as individual career moves.

“(Somber, serious tone) Hey now. My run on The Howard Stern Show ended this week after 12 amazing years (an eternity!).”

— Mike Trainor, writing after his dismissal

The layoff report identifies who was affected, but it does not establish where each person went next. Any claim about their current jobs would go beyond the documented record.

Why the answer cannot be a complete biography of everyone

The show employed and featured many people over its long run, while public reporting is uneven. For some staffers, there are clear departure dates and identifiable projects. For others, only a role and an end date are well established. Reliable records do not provide a complete 2026 employment or residence history for every former employee.

  • A departure date does not prove whether someone left voluntarily unless a source says so.
  • A later project, such as a book or radio show, does not establish a person’s entire subsequent career.
  • Silence in current coverage should be treated as an information limit, not evidence that someone disappeared or stopped working.

How the show’s scale shaped the public memory of departures

At its peak, the program’s audience and distribution made even behind-the-scenes personnel part of its identity. The Associated Press reported that Stern returned to SiriusXM in September 2025 after a publicity stunt concerning his future, while his contract situation was still being discussed. That continuing attention helps explain why staff changes from earlier decades keep generating new searches, even when the people involved have moved on to less-public work.

The short answer

Howard Stern’s former staffers followed different paths. Martling, Lange, Melendez, Salem and Egar have documented departure points; Lange has identifiable book and radio work afterward; Dell’Abate remained a prominent producer and memoirist; West’s early departure is clear but his current profile is not; and the July 2026 layoffs removed several later-era employees at once. For many others, the responsible answer is simply that authoritative current details are not established.
