Zachary Quinto Criticized by Toronto Restaurant for Alleged Staff Confrontation

Toronto café and bar Manita publicly criticized actor Zachary Quinto in June 2024, alleging that he yelled at staff during a disagreement over a ready table. The restaurant said the encounter made its host cry and left brunch diners uncomfortable. Those claims came from Manita’s own account and were not independently established in the contemporaneous coverage.

What Manita said happened

In a statement dated June 2, 2024, Manita said Quinto did not respond to two texts telling him that his table was ready. The restaurant alleged that he then yelled at staff and insisted that other empty tables were available, even after being told those tables were reserved.

Manita said the exchange “made our host cry and the rest of our brunch diners uncomfortable.” Global News and NME reported or summarized the restaurant’s account, but neither outlet presented an independent witness account of the encounter.

The restaurant described Quinto, who played Spock in Star Trek, as “an amazing Spock, but a terrible customer.” It also said he “yelled at our staff like an entitled child after he didn’t reply to two texts to inform him his table was ready.”

Did the restaurant say Quinto was banned?

Los Angeles Times coverage reported that Manita co-owner Ian McGrenaghan said Quinto would not be welcome back unless he formally apologized. The Standard reported the same condition. This was the restaurant’s stated position at the time; the reports do not establish that a permanent or currently active ban exists.

What was Quinto’s response?

At the time of the June 2024 reports, Global News said Quinto had not commented publicly and that his representatives had not responded to its inquiry. NME and the Los Angeles Times also reported contacting his representative. The available coverage does not establish whether he later responded, apologized or resolved the matter with Manita.

Why the wording matters

Manita’s post was an allegation by the restaurant involved in the dispute, not an independently verified finding. Its statement said it welcomed celebrity guests while objecting to what it characterized as demeaning treatment of restaurant workers. The restaurant concluded: “To all the other Zachary Quintos out there, on behalf of restaurant workers everywhere: We aren’t above criticism, but we are above being demeaned.” That sentence was Manita’s statement, not a quote from a named staff member.
