iHeartRadio is built around live stations
iHeartRadio brings live and local radio streams together with personalized artist stations, curated playlists, and podcasts. Its programming spans music as well as news, sports, talk, comedy, and other broadcast formats. The company describes its offering as including thousands of live and local stations; what you can stream can depend on your location and station rights. iHeartRadio’s service overview outlines its main listening options.
That makes iHeart a natural choice if your listening routine revolves around a local FM or AM station, a live show, or a mix of radio and spoken-word programming. Its free service also offers playlists and artist stations, but free listening is not the same as unrestricted, on-demand access to any track.

Pandora is built around personalized music stations
Pandora’s free experience centers on stations made from an artist, song, or genre. Thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback help shape what plays next, so the service suits listeners who want to set a direction and let music follow without building a playlist track by track. Pandora describes its approach in its U.S. plan and feature guide; its Voice Mode also supports music and podcast requests in the mobile app.
Pandora also offers podcasts and paid on-demand listening. Its station-first free tier is a different proposition from a music subscription that lets you select a song or album whenever you want.

Free plans: what you get without paying
Choose free iHeartRadio for live and spoken-word programming
The free tier is the better fit if you want to tune into local radio, browse news or sports, hear talk or comedy, follow podcasts, or use playlists and artist stations in one app. A particular station or show may not be available to stream in every area.
Choose free Pandora for low-effort music listening
Free Pandora is useful when you want to start with a musical seed—an artist, song, or genre—and let a station provide the next tracks. Feedback helps steer the station, but it does not turn the free experience into unrestricted on-demand playback.
Free does not mean identical: ad formats, skip and replay rules, and access to specific songs differ. Temporary access unlocked by an ad is not the same as a permanent on-demand feature, and offline music is tied to paid plans. Podcast and live-radio availability also varies by platform and rights.

Which service fits your listening?
For local radio, news, sports, and talk: iHeartRadio
Start with iHeart if the station or live program matters more than selecting individual tracks. Station streams can be unavailable outside their broadcast markets, and an online stream may carry substituted programming or different ads than the over-the-air signal.
For passive music discovery: Pandora
Choose Pandora if you want to name an artist, song, or genre, then listen while the station adapts to your feedback. This is a product-design advantage for low-effort station listening, not proof that one recommendation algorithm is objectively better for every listener.
For a specific song or a playlist: compare the upper tiers
Both services put broader on-demand control in a higher tier: iHeart All Access and Pandora Premium. Compare the billing price, supported devices, and how you plan to use playlists and downloads. If your priority is a full music library with extensive playlist management rather than radio, a service built primarily around on-demand music may fit better.

For podcasts: check for the shows you actually follow
iHeart emphasizes its own programming and shows from other networks, and its iOS and Android apps support following and downloading episodes. Pandora supports podcasts, including search and voice control in its mobile app. Catalog size alone does not determine which app is better for you: check show availability, release timing, offline playback, queue controls, and whether a program is exclusive or platform-specific.
For a commute or connected devices: verify the exact setup
Both services are available on a range of cars and connected devices. Pandora advertises support that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wearables, and smart speakers; iHeart describes availability across mobile, cars, and connected-device categories. A listing for a platform does not guarantee that every paid feature works there. Before relying on a setup, check the specific device, voice controls, premium playback, and whether downloads require the phone app. Pandora documents default-service setup for some home devices in its connected-device help.
For offline listening: match the plan to the content
- Offline personalized stations: Pandora Plus includes offline listening for stations.
- Offline chosen songs and playlists: Compare Pandora Premium with iHeart All Access. iHeart lists offline music downloads for its iOS and Android apps; Pandora Premium supports offline on-demand music and playlists subject to device and licensing limits.
- Offline podcast episodes: Treat this separately from music downloads. iHeart supports mobile podcast downloads, but confirm the specific app and device workflow you intend to use.
Limitations to check before subscribing
- Station location: A local stream may be restricted by location or licensing, even if the station broadcasts over the air in another market.
- Stream versus broadcast: Online radio may substitute programming or carry different advertising from the terrestrial signal.
- Tier boundaries: A station-focused Plus plan is not the same as a full on-demand plan. Confirm the exact playback and download features before upgrading.
- App and device limits: Downloads and other premium features may be restricted to certain apps, devices, or content. Pandora notes that licensing can limit skips and replays even on paid plans; see its Premium information.
- Billing channel: iHeart’s All Access list price varies between direct/Google Play and Apple App Store billing. Compare the final checkout amount rather than assuming the web price applies in the app.
- Trials and renewal: Confirm the renewal date and cancellation method for the plan and billing provider you use. Pandora says its subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled in advance.
Recommendation
Pick iHeartRadio when live local radio, broadcast personalities, news, sports, talk, or radio-centered podcasts are the point. Pick Pandora when you want personalized music stations that require little playlist management. If you mainly want to select exact songs and save music offline, compare iHeart All Access and Pandora Premium on price and device support; a music-first on-demand service may be a better match if live radio and station discovery are secondary.
