Catherine, Princess of Wales (widely known as Kate Middleton), had planned abdominal surgery at The London Clinic in London. Kensington Palace said on 17 January 2024 that the condition was non-cancerous, but it did not identify her diagnosis or the operation. She left the clinic for her home in Windsor on 29 January after making good progress.

What hospital did Kate Middleton have surgery at?

Catherine was admitted to The London Clinic on 16 January 2024 for planned abdominal surgery. Kensington Palace announced the admission the following day. The palace did not name the condition or specify the surgical procedure.

The palace described the condition as non-cancerous and said Catherine wanted her personal medical information to remain private. It also said that further updates would be issued only when there was significant new information.

In its statement, reproduced contemporaneously by The Guardian, Kensington Palace said: “She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible, and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.”

His treatment was a separate episode from Catherine’s abdominal surgery. The public statements do not establish any medical connection between the two cases.

The London Clinic’s institutional royal connections

The clinic’s published history says the Duke and Duchess of York opened the hospital on 18 February 1932. The Duke later became King George VI.

The same history records that the Prince of Wales—now King Charles III—opened a physiotherapy department, while the Duchess of Devonshire Wing, described by the clinic as its cancer centre, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II.

Reporting has additionally recorded these ceremonial links:

  • Charles opened the physiotherapy department in 1989.
  • Princess Margaret launched the clinic’s MRI unit in 1991.
  • Queen Elizabeth II unveiled a new cancer unit in 2010.

Why the palace did not provide more medical detail

Kensington Palace framed the limited disclosure as a privacy decision. It said Catherine wanted as much normality as possible for her children and that her personal medical information should remain private. The palace therefore committed to issuing updates only when there was significant new information.

That policy means the confirmed public record supports the hospital, admission date, broad description of the surgery, non-cancerous characterization, and return home—but not a more specific diagnosis or operation.
