Why were people posting Studio Ghibli-style AI images?
OpenAI announced image generation in ChatGPT on March 25, 2025. The following day, coverage described people sharing images that recast photographs, memes and public figures in a look reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films. The trend spread through social feeds quickly enough to prompt questions about the technology, artistic influence and copyright.

OpenAI described its policy as allowing broader studio styles while restricting requests to imitate individual living artists. The Associated Press quoted the company saying it “permits broader studio styles — which people have used to generate and share some truly delightful and inspired original fan creations.” That is OpenAI’s description of its product policy, not a legal ruling or a guarantee about every generated image. What can the fan subreddit tell us?
r/ghibli is a fan forum, not an official Studio Ghibli channel. It can show reactions from people who chose to post there, but those posts do not establish a representative fan consensus or the studio’s position. TechCrunch’s coverage connected subreddit discussion with the image trend; without relying on individual posts as verified examples, it is better to treat the forum as a window onto participating fans rather than as a poll or a definitive account of what “Ghibli fans” think. r/ghibli; TechCrunch
What are the copyright and ethics questions?
The viral images renewed two related but distinct questions: whether copyrighted works were used to train image models, and whether an individual generated image might reproduce protected expression. The AP reported that OpenAI did not answer its question about whether it had a license for training on Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki works. A lawyer quoted in the report distinguished the general principle that artistic style itself is not copyrightable from the possibility that a particular output could include recognizable elements of a protected work. Why did Miyazaki’s old AI comments resurface?
During the debate, attention returned to a 2016 documentary clip in which Hayao Miyazaki, then 76, reacted to a crude AI animation demonstration. The AP reported his remark, “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.” It was a response to the demonstration shown in 2016—not a comment on OpenAI’s 2025 image generator.
