No. Neil Druckmann did not announce that The Last of Us Part III was canceled. In a March 6, 2025 Variety interview, he warned fans not to count on another game and said, “This could be it.” That is a deliberately cautious statement, not a formal cancellation notice or a confirmation that Part III is in production.
What Druckmann actually said
Variety reporter Adam B. Vary asked Druckmann about the long-discussed possibility of a third game while interviewing him primarily about season two of HBO’s adaptation. Druckmann replied: “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

The wording matters. “Don’t bet” tells readers not to treat another sequel as likely, while “could” leaves the outcome open. He did not say Naughty Dog had canceled the project, nor did he announce a final decision about the franchise.
Why the quote is being read as a cancellation
The Last of Us Part II ended the original game’s central conflict in 2020, and Druckmann’s warning came from the series’ principal writer and creative director. Put together, those facts make the quote sound conclusive. Grammatically, however, it is a warning about expectations rather than a statement of completed corporate action.

The interview also concerns both the game series and its television adaptation. Druckmann’s answer was about the possibility of another game; it was not an announcement that HBO’s show had ended.
What Naughty Dog had considered after Part II
A September 11, 2025 Game Informer report provides additional history. After completing Part II, Naughty Dog debated whether to move directly into a third game and spent a substantial period examining possible ideas. According to the report, that creative exploration ultimately led the studio toward the project now known as Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
This establishes that Part III was seriously discussed at one point. It does not establish that a full production team was assembled, that the game entered active development, or that the idea was permanently discarded.

- Enhanced visuals: Completely rebuilt from the ground up using Naughty Dog’s latest PS5 engine technology to improve every visual detail, The Last of Us experience has been faithfully enhanced with more realistic lighting and atmosphere, more intricate environments and creative reimaginings of familiar spaces.
- Fast loading: Initial loading times are near instant, and seamless after the first instance thanks to the PS5 console’s SSD – so you can pick up where you left off in the story and load specific encounters and chapters more quickly.
- Haptic feedback: DualSense wireless controller haptic feedback support for every weapon elevates combat encounters, and environments are brought to life through DualSense wireless controller haptic sensations of subtle falling rain, the crunch of stepping on snow and more.
- Adaptive triggers: All The Last of Us iconic weapons, including Joel’s revolver and Ellie’s bow, now deliver dynamic DualSense wireless controller trigger resistance and kickback on firing for deeper combat immersion.
- 3D Audio: Designed to make use of the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, Naughty Dog’s newly upgraded audio engine delivers richer soundscapes, bigger explosive moments and more visceral gameplay through compatible stereo headphones (analogue or USB) or TV speakers.
An earlier concept is not a current project
Game Informer also revisited an earlier statement from the Grounded II documentary in which Druckmann said he had found a concept that could serve as another chapter with a through-line connecting all three games. That remark describes a creative possibility at that time. It is not a release commitment, and it does not override his later advice not to assume more The Last of Us is coming.

The most accurate answer to the big fan questions
Did Neil Druckmann confirm there will not be a Part III?
No. He said fans should not bet on more The Last of Us and that the existing series could be the endpoint. That is the strongest public caution in the cited interview, but it is not a categorical confirmation that no third game will ever exist.
Is The Last of Us Part III canceled?
There is no formal cancellation announcement in the cited reporting. Calling it “canceled” goes beyond the evidence.

Is Naughty Dog making it now?
The cited articles do not verify current production. They document earlier creative deliberation and a later public warning, not a present-day development status.
What fans can reasonably expect next
For now, the responsible expectation is uncertainty. Naughty Dog has not supplied a release date or current production confirmation for Part III in the reports discussed here. The studio may continue with other projects, revisit the concept later, or leave the two existing games as the complete story; the available statements do not choose among those outcomes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAnyone revisiting the series can still start with The Last of Us Part II, which was released for PlayStation 4 on June 19, 2020. Its existence and date say nothing about whether a sequel is being made, but they provide the latest completed game chapter currently available.
Bottom line
“This could be it” means Druckmann wants audiences to stop treating The Last of Us Part III as inevitable. It does not mean he announced a cancellation. The evidence supports “another game is uncertain and should not be expected,” while claims that Part III is definitively abandoned, secretly in development, or scheduled for release remain unverified.
