Iron Lung has earned about $50 million in worldwide theatrical box office, according to Box Office Mojo. That makes it a major box-office success against reported production costs of $3 million or a little over $4 million. But those figures do not establish how much profit the film ultimately made: box-office gross is not the same as money retained after theaters, distribution and other costs.
How much did Iron Lung make?
Box Office Mojo lists Iron Lung at $50,036,487 in worldwide theatrical gross, comprising $40,851,941 domestic and $9,184,546 international. The listing also reports a $17.8 million domestic opening. These are gross box-office receipts, not the film’s net income.
Those totals make “smash hit” a fair description of the film’s box-office performance. They do not, by themselves, show how much reached Markiplier or any other party. Theaters retain a share of ticket sales, and distribution and release expenses also affect what a production earns. Box Office Mojo’s listing supplies the gross figures, not an audited profit statement.
How much did Iron Lung cost to make?
Public reporting gives two different production-budget figures, and the available accounts do not reconcile them:

| Reported figure | Source and context |
|---|---|
| $3 million | YouTube’s official blog described Iron Lung as a $3 million independent film in a February 23, 2026 interview. |
| A little over $4 million | PC Gamer reported on February 28, 2026, that Markiplier had stated the budget was “a little over” $4 million. |
The difference matters when comparing the gross with production costs, but neither estimate changes the basic distinction: a theatrical gross many times larger than a reported production budget is evidence of strong commercial performance, not proof of a particular net profit. The YouTube interview also described a three-year production and 80,000 gallons of fake blood.
Was Iron Lung profitable?
The public figures make it plausible that the film performed very well commercially, but they do not confirm its final profitability. A production budget covers making the film; it is not a complete accounting of release costs, and the box-office gross is divided among theaters and other participants. The sources cited here do not establish Iron Lung’s final net proceeds.
Markiplier told TheWrap that self-financing and distribution terms informed his decisions. Without disclosed theater splits, distribution expenses and other relevant costs, a precise profit figure—or a claim that the movie was already hugely profitable—goes beyond what the published numbers show. TheWrap’s interview discusses his approach to releasing the film, not an audited earnings result.

Markiplier initially expected a much smaller theatrical run. In TheWrap’s interview, he said: “When I decided to put the film out myself, I didn’t know it was going to be in 3,000 theaters. I thought it would come in 200 theaters max.”

YouTube’s official blog later characterized the self-distributed release as reaching more than 3,000 screens. Together, these accounts show a release that expanded well beyond his early expectation, with audience requests and theater-chain decisions both part of the story.
In the YouTube interview, Markiplier put one lesson for smaller creators this way: “The replicable part is realizing theaters just want butts in seats.” It is his perspective on reaching exhibitors, not evidence of the film’s financial return.
What is Markiplier’s Iron Lung about?
The film adapts David Szymanski’s game. Its official site describes a post-apocalyptic setting in which the “Quiet Rapture” removes all known stars and habitable planets. A convict is sent in a small submarine to explore an ocean of blood on a desolate moon. Mark Fischbach, known as Markiplier, is credited as writer, director, editor and executive producer. The official page lists the film as rated R, with a runtime of 2 hours and 7 minutes.
