What changed in Microsoft’s movie and TV store?
Microsoft Support states that it “no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows,” on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and Microsoft Store on Xbox. The change covers new transactions on those storefronts; it is not an announcement that the Movies & TV playback app has been removed from Windows or current Xbox consoles.

Microsoft’s wording focuses on purchases. Its support FAQ also describes the end of selling new movies and TV content. The page does not establish a separate Microsoft rental service that continues after purchases ended, so readers should not expect to rent new titles through the named Microsoft storefronts either.
Can I still watch movies I bought from Microsoft?
Microsoft says previous purchases remain available in the Microsoft Movies & TV app on Windows or Xbox. On Windows, Microsoft says downloaded playback will continue to be available in HD.

- Open the Microsoft Movies & TV app on a supported Windows device or Xbox console.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the original purchase.
- Look in your library for previously purchased movies and TV shows.
- On Windows, download eligible purchases when you need offline playback.
This is Microsoft’s current access guidance, not a promise that digital availability is indefinite. If a title does not appear or will not play, Microsoft directs customers to Microsoft Support; it does not guarantee a particular fix.
Can I transfer my movies to another service?
No direct transfer is available. Microsoft’s FAQ says: “You cannot directly move your purchased content to another service.” A purchase in the Microsoft library therefore does not become an account or license in another store.
Xbox’s earlier Movies Anywhere guidance is narrower. In its August 17, 2023 announcement about Xbox 360, Xbox said titles eligible for Movies Anywhere could be streamed or downloaded through that service. Eligibility is limited, so this does not make every Microsoft movie transferable, and it does not override Microsoft’s current general statement that purchases cannot be moved directly.
Can I get a refund for Microsoft Movies & TV purchases?
Microsoft’s Movies & TV FAQ answers the refund question “No” and says movies and TV shows are ineligible under its Store Terms of Sale. Microsoft’s broader digital-goods refund guidance adds an important qualification: digital goods, including movies and TV shows, are not returnable unless the offer or applicable law makes the customer eligible.

That means Microsoft’s stated default is no refund, while a specific promotion, contract term, or local law could affect eligibility. Policy outcomes can vary by jurisdiction; do not assume that a support request will produce an automatic refund.
Where can I buy or rent movies now?
Microsoft identifies Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home among the transactional services available through Xbox and Windows stores. They are examples rather than a complete list, and availability can differ by country, device, account and title.

Check the individual title page on the service you choose. Microsoft’s support page does not establish current prices, title-by-title availability, technical quality or a ranking among these services.

The Xbox 360 change was a separate, earlier event. In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 17, 2023, Xbox said the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace would stop supporting new purchases on July 29, 2024. The notice also said the Movies & TV app would stop functioning on Xbox 360 after that date.

Do not apply the Xbox 360 closure date to Windows or modern Xbox storefront access, and do not confuse it with Microsoft’s current withdrawal of new movie and TV sales.
